    Yield and Quality of Passion Fruit in Relation to Training Systems

    Four different training systems, viz., Kniffin, High trellis, Tatura and Bower were evaluated in passion fruit cv. Kaveri. Kniffin system with 4 arms recorded highest cumulative yield of 67.22 t/ha with a cost:benefit ratio of 1:4.25, followed by Kniffin 2 arm and 6 arm, respectively. Kniffin system was also the most ideal system of training for passion fruit, facilitating easy cultural operations. Although Tatura system recorded highest cumulative yield/vine (43.57kg), it registered lowest yield/ha, largely due to lower plant population/ha (1250 vines/ha). Fruit quality parameters like TSS, Vit. C, carotene content and titrable acidity were not significantly influenced by different training systems. Similarly, interception of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) by the canopy did not differ significantly among training systems. Though photosynthetic rate did not differ significantly, shaded leaves in the canopy did not contribute photosynthates and were parasitic on the vine

    A rare case of immune-related pseudotumor of ovary mimicking ovarian malignancy

    IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting various body organs. However, genital tract involvement is rarely reported. A 40 years old reproductive-age woman presented with a solid abdominopelvic mass of 20 weeks size. CECT revealed a large multiloculated solid cystic lesion arising from right adnexa with multiple enlarged lymph nodes and omental thickening with gross right-sided hydroureteronephrosis suggestive of ovarian malignancy stage III. Surprisingly, tumor markers were normal. Intraoperatively, we noticed a 15×15 cm right ovarian mass encasing the right ureter all around and constricting it. The mass was densely adherent to recto-sigmoid and right pelvic wall, which mandated extensive surgery. Histopathological examination with immuno-histo-chemistry (IHC) suggested the diagnosis of IgG4-RD of ovary. Awareness about its occurrence in ovary will help in arriving at the diagnosis which may influence the extent of surgery. Lymphoplasmacytic infiltration with fibrosis in histopathological examination warrants IHC analysis for achieving a diagnosis

    Perch Associated Expression of Phenotypic Plasticity in Limb Development and Sprint Speed in Agamid Lizard Calotes versicolor: A Laboratory Study

    New born hatchlings of Calotes versicolor were reared in terrarium having narrow or wide perches for a period of 4-month and their snout vent length (SVL), tail, fore and hindlimb lengths were measured at monthly intervals. Limb postures (closer to the body or spread away from the body) were also recorded. The sprint speed was recorded in two and four-month old lizards on a 1 m long race track providing 45° or 60° slope. In both the groups, SVL and tail lengths were comparable but the limb lengths and their growth rates were significantly greater in lizards of wider perch group. The lizards reared with narrow perches positioned their limbs closer to the body; while those reared on wider perches spread their limbs away from their body. Further, the latter exhibited significantly higher sprint speed regardless of the slope of the race track over those of narrow perch group. Sprint speeds of lizards in both groups were correlated with the limb sizes. The study showed that the lizards reared on narrow or wide perches exhibited divergent adaptive responses (phenotypic plasticity) by developing longer or shorter limbs and corresponding changes in their sprint speeds. These findings support the idea that availability of perch structure during early development evokes adaptive plasticity in the limb development and associated locomotory performance in arboreal lizards like C. versicolor

    Entrepreneurship Development in Agriculture through Agro Processing Centre: a Case Study of Almora District in NW Himalaya

    This study was conducted by Vivekananda Institute of Hill Agriculture, Almora (India) to enhance entrepreneurship in the unemployed educated youths in North-Western Himalayas, who otherwise are migrating from hills in search of employment and livelihood. An agro-processing centre (APC) was established with the institutional support and was operational through an entrepreneur. The establishment cost of INR 2,19,000 was borne by the institute. The entrepreneur invested INR 1,66,255 for purchasing raw food grains. Total annual cost (Operational cost + Rental value of APC and storage building) was INR 27956. Annual income of INR 95,145/- was generated from sale of the processed products in brand name of “HIMRAJ” apart from generating income of INR 27,867 by providing processing service to the nearby farmers. This way he earned the INR 1,23,012 as gross income, where as net income was INR 81,356 per annum. This case study shows that if an entrepreneur maintains the APC in effectively, he can generate sufficient income from processing and value-addition of food grains. As a result of this, youths in hills can be self-employed and will not migrate from hills in search of employment and livelihood security

    Transfer Learning based Automated Essay Summarization

    The human evaluation of essays has become a very time-consuming process as the number of schools and universities has grown. The available software entities are unable to assess the sentiment associated with essays. Thus, we propose a model using Natural Language Processing to assess the essay based on both grammar and sentiment associated with the essay by using linear regression and ULMFiT (Universal Language Model Fine-tuning for Text Classification) models.  Evaluation of essay is done in two parts. Part one is on essay grading with respect to grammar with maximum 12 and minimum 0 grade points and in part two score of 0/1 for sentiment analysis with 0 being negative and 1 being positive. The model can be used to score the essay and discard any essay with a score less than a specified value or specified sentiment score

    Multi-Sideband RABBIT in Argon

    We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of a three-sideband (3-SB) modification of the "reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions" (RABBIT) setup. The 3-SB RABBIT scheme makes it possible to investigate phases resulting from interference between transitions of different orders in the continuum. Furthermore, the strength of this method is its ability to focus on the atomic phases only, independent of a chirp in the harmonics, by comparing the RABBIT phases extracted from specific SB groups formed by two adjacent harmonics. We verify earlier predictions that the phases and the corresponding time delays in the three SBs extracted from angle-integrated measurements become similar with increasing photon electron energy. A variation in the angle dependence of the RABBIT phases in the three SBs results from the distinct Wigner and continuum-continuum coupling phases associated with the individual angular momentum channels. A qualitative explanation of this dependence is attempted by invoking a propensity rule. Comparison between the experimental data and predictions from an R-matrix (close-coupling) with time dependence calculation shows qualitative agreement in the observed trends.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Molecular epidemiology of canine parvovirus in southern India

    Aim: The present study was conducted to isolate and characterize canine parvovirus circulating in Southern India by genetic analysis of VP2 capsid protein gene.Materials and Methods: In this study, 128 samples were collected from nine different locations covering five Southern Indian states (Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka) . Out of 128 samples, 69 samples were found to be positive by PCR assay. Out of 69 positive samples, 36 were randomly selected and processed for virus isolation. Twenty viruses could be isolated successfully and 18 randomly selected isolate were subjected to VP2 gene sequence analysis along with 6 random clinical samples.Result: Seventeen isolates and 5 clinical samples were characterized as New CPV-2a (CPV2a with 297-Ser→Ala). But one isolate and one clinical sample had amino acids variations which were characteristics of New CPV-2b. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that one of the field isolates was found to be phylogenetically closely related to New CPV-2b strains of India; rest other sequences was found to share ancestral origins with New CPV-2a reference strains of Japan, China, Thailand and India.Conclusion: The present study revealed that the predominant CPV strain circulating in Southern India is New CPV-2a. There is also enough indication of New CPV-2b strain from different states of Southern India
