Components Qualification for a Possible use in the Mu2e Calorimeter Waveform Digitizers
The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab searches for the charged flavor violating
conversion of a muon into an electron in the Coulomb field of a nucleus. The
detector consists of a straw tube tracker and a CSI crystal electromagnetic
calorimeter, both housed in a superconducting solenoid. Both the front-end and
the digital electronics, located inside the cryostat, will be operated in
vacuum under a 1 T magnetic field, having to sustain the high flux of neutrons
and ionizing particles coming from the muons stopping target. These harsh
experimental conditions make the design of the calorimeter waveform digitizer
quite challenging. All the selected commercial devices must be tested
individually and qualified for radiation hardness and operation in high
magnetic field. At the moment the expected particles flux and spectra at the
digitizers location are not completely simulated and we are using initial rough
estimates to select the components for the first prototype. We are gaining
experience in the qualification procedures using the selected components but
the choice will be frozen only when dose and neutron flux simulations will be
completed. The experimental results of the first qualification campaign are

Clinical evaluation of creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase for monitoring muscle effort in working dogs in different simulated fieldworks
The clinical profiles of muscle biomarkers (Creatine Kinase–CK-and Aspartate Aminotransferase–AST) performed during training may help in determining the fitness level of dogs and their potentiality to perform specific activities. This study investigated the potential variations of physiological parameters and muscular biomarkers in trained search and rescue dogs during search activity in two different areas. The aim was to verify the absence of any muscular enzymes after 20 min of search activity. The variations of physiological parameters (pulse rate; respiratory rate; rectal body temperature) and skeletal muscular biomarkers (CK and AST) were evaluated before and after search activity. Twenty-three trained dogs met the inclusion criteria and were divided into two groups. One group experienced search activity in a well-known area, while the second one in a similar, but unknown, area. The results for physiological parameters and skeletal muscular biomarkers values showed no significant differences between the two groups (p > 0.05), confirming that an effective conditioning protects against enzymatic alteration during a 20 min duration of submaximal activity
Macro-micro relationship in nanostructured functional composites
This paper examines the results of the characterization of two functional composites: Poly(methyl methacrylate)
(PMMA)-Ce:YAG (yttrium aluminium garnet doped with cerium) and PMMA-cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF). The
composites were prepared as possible emitters in the fields of lighting thermal sensors. The prepared composites were characterized
using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric
analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) analyses to study
the correlation between micro and macro characteristics. We found that the molecular interactions of the two different
fillers with the matrix were localized in different sites of the polymer chains. Moreover, the composites showed an
increased thermal strength and stiffness, in particular the PMMA-Ce:YAG composite
Green Synthesis, Molecular Characterization and Associative Behavior of Some Gemini Surfactants without a Spacer Group
A series of new gemini surfactants without a spacer group, disodium
2,3-dialkyl-1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylates, were synthesized in a green chemistry context
minimizing the use of organic solvents and applying microwaves (MW) when activation
energy was required. Once the desired architecture was confirmed by means of the nuclear
magnetic resonance technique (1H-NMR, 1H-1H COSY) for all the studied surfactants, the
critical micellization concentration was determined by conductance measurements. The
diffusion coefficient of micelles formed by the four compounds was characterized using
pulsed field gradient (PFG)-NMR. Diffusion coefficients were found to be dependent on
the concentration and on the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. The absence of the
spacer group, peculiar to this new series of gemini surfactants, may confer relatively low
flexibility to the molecules, with potential implications on the interfacial properties,
namely on micellization. These gemini surfactants might have interesting applications in the preparation of composite materials, in nanotechnology, in gene transfection and mainly,
due to the low CMCs, as new interesting ingredients of cosmetics and toiletries
A step forward in disclosing the secret of stradivari's varnish by NMR spectroscopy
It is commonly thought that the varnishes used by the great violin-maker Antonio Stradivari may have a role in determining not only the esthetical features but also the acoustic properties of his instruments, and the idea of a "lost secret" is still widespread among musicians and violin-makers. Previous scientific researches on varnish samples of Stradivari's instruments revealed that they were generally made by a mix of linseed oil with and colophony or metal rosinates in different ratios ranging between 75/25 (oil/resin) and 60/40 (oil/rosinate). However, it is still not clear whether the mixture composition can be related to any structural and/or functional feature of the resulting varnish. To investigate this aspect, we prepared varnishes with different linseed oil/colophony (w/w) ratios and applied NMR techniques to achieve information about their chemical-physical characteristics. Here, we show that the two components strongly interact in the solid state and that only the varnish prepared from 75/25 (w/w) linseed oil/colophony mixture displays unique properties in terms of dynamic homogeneity unlike coatings with other compositions. Our results suggest that the so-called "secret" of Stradivari's finish could not be related to unknown ingredient(s) but to a specific oil/resin composition that provides the best performance
Superficial heating evaluation by thermographic imaging before and after tecar therapy in six dogs submitted to a rehabilitation protocol: A pilot study
Thermography is a non-invasive diagnostic method commonly used to monitor changes of the body surface temperature potentially induced by different conditions such as fever, inflammation, trauma, or changes of tissue perfusion. Capacitive-resistive diathermy therapy (such as energy transfer capacitive and resistive\u2014Tecar) is commonly used in rehabilitation due to its diathemic effect secondary to blood circulation increase that could accelerate the healing process. The aim of this study was to monitor by thermal camera the diathermic effects induced by Tecar on the surface of the region of application. The investigation was conducted on six dogs referred for Tecar therapy to treat muscle contractures (three dogs) or osteoarthritis (three dogs). Eleven anatomical treated regions were recorded. Thermographic images and relative measurements were obtained by each region immediately before (T0), at conclusion (T1), and sixty seconds after the Tecar application (T2). Data were recorded and statistically analyzed. A comparison of temperature differences (maximum, minimum and mean values) between T0 and T1, T0 and T2, and T1 and T2 was performed by ANOVA test with Bonferroni post hoc (p 64 0.05). Statistically significant differences were detected for mean temperature between T0 (32.42 \ub1 1.57\u25e6C) and T1 (33.36 \ub1 1.17\u25e6C) (p = 0.040) and between T1 and T2 (32.83 \ub1 1.31\u25e6C) (p = 0.031). Furthermore, there was no significant difference between the mean temperature at T0 and T2, demonstrating that superficial diathermic effect exhausted within 60 s
Pre-Production and Quality Assurance of the Mu2e Calorimeter Silicon Photomultipliers
The Mu2e electromagnetic calorimeter has to provide precise information on
energy, time and position for 100 MeV electrons. It is composed of 1348
un-doped CsI crystals, each coupled to two large area Silicon Photomultipliers
(SiPMs). A modular and custom SiPM layout consisting of a 32 array of
66 mm UV-extended monolithic SiPMs has been developed to fulfill
the Mu2e calorimeter requirements and a pre-production of 150 prototypes has
been procured by three international firms (Hamamatsu, SensL and Advansid). A
detailed quality assurance process has been carried out on this first batch of
photosensors: the breakdown voltage, the gain, the quenching time, the dark
current and the Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE) have been determined for each
monolithic cell of each SiPMs array. One sample for each vendor has been
exposed to a neutron fluency up to 8.5~~10 1 MeV (Si) eq.
n/cm and a linear increase of the dark current up to tens of mA has been
observed. Others 5 samples for each vendor have undergone an accelerated aging
in order to verify a Mean Time To Failure (MTTF) higher than 10

Effects of exercise on urinary biochemical parameters and proteins in a group of well-trained military working dogs
Exercise-induced proteinuria has been widely investigated in humans, also in relation to intensity and duration of activity. Instead, there are only limited publications regarding urinary biochemical parameters and urinary proteins before and after physical activity in dogs. This paper aimed to investigate the effects of exercise on urinary biochemistry and proteins in military dogs. Twenty-four dogs were enrolled in this study. All the dogs were clinically sound, and they were examined before and after activity. Pulse rates (PR) and respiratory rate (RR) were monitored. Urine was sampled before and after a training session of search activity. Standard urinalysis was carried out, urine total proteins and creatinine were measured and the urinary protein:creatinine ratio was calculated; finally, the urinary proteins were separated using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Clinical examination before and after activity did not reveal any pathological finding. After activity, the PR was slightly increased, while the RR was notably increased (p < 0.05). Total proteins, albumin, and their ratio with creatinine were significantly higher after exercise when considering all the dogs included or only the females while, when considering only the males no significant difference was detected. The clinical relevance of this study was related to the possibility of using urine as a non-invasive sample for monitoring health status after training activity and exercise in dogs. An increase in microalbuminuria after search activity, measured using SDS-PAGE could be considered an early biomarker of renal function during training sessions
THU0600 a case of systemic sclerosis complicated by renal crisis: potential etiopathogenetic role of cytomegalovirus and treatment
Background:
Scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) is a rare complication of systemic sclerosis (SSc), which can be triggered by viruses, such as Cytomegalovirus (CMV). SRC presents as a new-onset accelerated-phase hypertension with/without rapidly progressive renal failure.
Objectives:
Here we describe the case of a patient developing SSc complicated by the appearance of SRC after a recent episode of acute Cytomegalovirus infection.
Methods:
A 66-year-old male was referred to our Scleroderma Unit in March 2019. He presented with widespread skin rash, exertional dyspnoea and peripheral oedemas. He reported a myocarditis due to CMV occurred in October 2018. Antibodies anti-CMV IgM were detected in his serum.
