Open defecation and childhood stunting in India: an ecological analysis of new data from 112 districts.
Poor sanitation remains a major public health concern linked to several important health outcomes; emerging evidence indicates a link to childhood stunting. In India over half of the population defecates in the open; the prevalence of stunting remains very high. Recently published data on levels of stunting in 112 districts of India provide an opportunity to explore the relationship between levels of open defecation and stunting within this population. We conducted an ecological regression analysis to assess the association between the prevalence of open defecation and stunting after adjustment for potential confounding factors. Data from the 2011 HUNGaMA survey was used for the outcome of interest, stunting; data from the 2011 Indian Census for the same districts was used for the exposure of interest, open defecation. After adjustment for various potential confounding factors--including socio-economic status, maternal education and calorie availability--a 10 percent increase in open defecation was associated with a 0.7 percentage point increase in both stunting and severe stunting. Differences in open defecation can statistically account for 35 to 55 percent of the average difference in stunting between districts identified as low-performing and high-performing in the HUNGaMA data. In addition, using a Monte Carlo simulation, we explored the effect on statistical power of the common practice of dichotomizing continuous height data into binary stunting indicators. Our simulation showed that dichotomization of height sacrifices statistical power, suggesting that our estimate of the association between open defecation and stunting may be a lower bound. Whilst our analysis is ecological and therefore vulnerable to residual confounding, these findings use the most recently collected large-scale data from India to add to a growing body of suggestive evidence for an effect of poor sanitation on human growth. New intervention studies, currently underway, may shed more light on this important issue
Optical properties of metal nanoparticles with no center of inversion symmetry: observation of volume plasmons
We present theoretical and experimental studies of the optical response of
L-shaped silver nanoparticles. The scattering spectrum exhibits several plasmon
resonances that depend sensitively on the polarization of the incident
electromagnetic field. The physical origin of the resonances is traced to
different plasmon phenomena. In particular, a high energy band with unusual
properties is interpreted in terms of volume plasmon oscillations arising from

Development of an exergame to deliver a sustained dose of high-intensity training: formative pilot randomized trial
Background: Sport science can play a critical role in reducing health inequalities. The inverse relationship between life expectancy, cardiorespiratory fitness, and socioeconomic status could be addressed by performing high-intensity training (HIT), delivered in a class salient and accessible approach. Commercially available exergames have shown encouraging compliance rates but are primarily designed for entertainment purposes rather than focusing on health-related outcomes. A serious game tailored toward delivering an exercise stimulus, while reducing the aversive protocols associated with HIT, could be beneficial to engage and improve health outcomes in socially deprived males.
Objective: The aims of this study were to develop an exergame capable of delivering HIT and evaluate the effect on selected health outcomes in men recruited in regions of socioeconomic deprivation.
Methods: We conducted an exploratory trial in our target population, and participants were allocated to intervention (n=14) or control groups (n=10) by third-party minimization. The intervention was a 6-week training program consisting of three sessions of exergaming per week. The sessions involved a structured warm-up, then brief intermittent repetitions in the form of boxing rounds (10 s, 20 s, and 30 s) against their peers with a work/rest ratio of 0.25.
Results: Retention to the intervention was 87.5% (21/24). Over the duration of the intervention, session attendance was 67.5% (170/252); repetition mean and peak heart rates (% of maximal) and session ratings of perceived exertion (AU, arbitrary units) were 86.3 (5.4%), 89.9 (6.1%), and 7.5 (2.2 AU), respectively. The effect of the intervention, when compared with the control, was a likely small beneficial improvement in predicted maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max, 3.0; 90% confidence limits ±2.6%). Effects on body mass, waist circumference, and blood pressure were either trivial or unclear.
Conclusions: Over the 6-week intervention, the exergame delivered a consistent and sustained dose of HIT, with some beneficial effects on aerobic fitness in the target population.

Life at both ends of the ladder: education-based identification and its association with well-being and social attitudes
Level of formal education is an important divide in contemporary societies; it is positively related to health, well-being, and social attitudes such as tolerance for minorities and interest in politics. We investigated whether education-based identification is a common underlying factor of these education effects. Indeed, education-based identification was stronger among the higher educated, especially for identification aspects that encompass education-based group esteem (i.e., the belief that one’s educational group is worthy and that others think so, too). Furthermore, while group esteem had beneficial effects across educational levels, aspects of identification that were unrelated to group esteem had positive effects for the higher educated but not for the less educated. Thus, the less educated do not benefit from the psychologically nourishing effect of identification that exists for other groups. The stigma and responsibility related to low education could be a common explanation for a wide range of outcomes
Phytoplankton community responses in a shallow lake following lanthanum-bentonite application
The release of phosphorus (P) from bed sediments to the overlying water can delay the recovery of lakes for decades following reductions in catchment contributions, preventing water quality targets being met within timeframes set out by environmental legislation (e.g. EU Water Framework Directive: WFD). Therefore supplementary solutions for restoring lakes have been explored, including the capping of sediment P sources using a lanthanum (La)-modified bentonite clay to reduce internal P loading and enhance the recovery process. Here we present results from Loch Flemington where the first long-term field trial documenting responses of phytoplankton community structure and abundance, and the UK WFD phytoplankton metric to a La-bentonite application was performed. A Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) analysis was used to distinguish natural variability from treatment effect and confirmed significant reductions in the magnitude of summer cyanobacterial blooms in Loch Flemington, relative to the control site, following La-bentonite application. However this initial cyanobacterial response was not sustained beyond two years after application, which implied that the reduction in internal P loading was short-lived; several possible explanations for this are discussed. One reason is that this ecological quality indicator is sensitive to inter-annual variability in weather patterns, particularly summer rainfall and water temperature. Over the monitoring period, the phytoplankton community structure of Loch Flemington became less dominated by cyanobacteria and more functionally diverse. This resulted in continual improvements in the phytoplankton compositional and abundance metrics, which were not observed at the control site, and may suggest an ecological response to the sustained reduction in filterable reactive phosphorus (FRP) concentration following La-bentonite application. Overall, phytoplankton classification indicated that the lake moved from poor to moderate ecological status but did not reach the proxy water quality target (i.e. WFD Good Ecological Status) within four years of the application. As for many other shallow lakes, the effective control of internal P loading in Loch Flemington will require further implementation of both in-lake and catchment-based measures. Our work emphasizes the need for appropriate experimental design and long-term monitoring programmes, to ascertain the efficacy of intervention measures in delivering environmental improvements at the field scale

Reviews and syntheses: Understanding the impacts of peatland catchment management on dissolved organic matter concentration and treatability
In the UK, most large reservoirs constructed for public water
supply are in upland areas. Many are situated in catchments characterised by
organic-rich soils, including peatlands. Although these soils naturally
leach large amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to water, the
widespread degradation of upland peat in the UK is believed to have
exacerbated rates of DOM loss. High and rising DOM concentrations in these
regions raise treatment challenges for the water industry.
In the UK, water companies are increasingly considering whether upland-catchment peat restoration measures can slow down or even reverse rising
source water DOM concentrations and, thus, reduce the need for more costly and
complex engineering solutions. There remains considerable uncertainty around
the effectiveness of such measures, and a comprehensive overview of the
research in this area remains lacking. Here, we review the peer-reviewed
evidence of the effectiveness of four catchment management options in
controlling DOM release from peat soils: ditch blocking, revegetation,
reducing forest cover and cessation of managed burning.
Results of plot-scale investigations into the effects of ditch blocking on DOM
leaching are currently largely equivocal, while there is a paucity of
information regarding impacts at spatial scales of more direct relevance to
water managers. There is some, although limited, evidence that the terrestrial
vegetation type may influence DOM concentrations and treatability. The
presence of plantation forestry on peat soils is generally associated with
elevated DOM concentrations, although reducing forest cover appears to have
little short-term benefit, and associated disturbance may even increase
concentrations further.
Catchment management measures have rarely been monitored with downstream
water quality as the focus. To mitigate the uncertainty surrounding
restoration effects on DOM, measures should be undertaken on a site-specific
basis, where the scale, effect size and duration of the intervention are
considered in relation to subsequent biogeochemical processing that occurs
in the reservoir, the treatment capacity of the water treatment works and
future projected DOM trends.</p
