Stability of Bose Einstein condensates of hot magnons in YIG
We investigate the stability of the recently discovered room temperature
Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of magnons in Ytrrium Iron Garnet (YIG) films.
We show that magnon-magnon interactions depend strongly on the external field
orientation, and that the BEC in current experiments is actually metastable -
it only survives because of finite size effects, and because the BEC density is
very low. On the other hand a strong field applied perpendicular to the sample
plane leads to a repulsive magnon-magnon interaction; we predict that a
high-density magnon BEC can then be formed in this perpendicular field

Static displacements and chemical correlations in alloys
Recent experiments in metallic solid solutions have revealed interesting
correlations between static pair-displacements and the ordering behavior of
these alloys. This paper discusses a simple theoretical model which
successfully explains these observations and which provides a natural framework
for analyzing experimental measurements of pair-displacements and chemical
correlations in solid solutions. The utility and scope of this model is
demonstrated by analyzing results of experiments on and alloys
and results of simulations of and alloys.Comment: 12 page
Efficient CRISPR/Cas-Mediated Targeted Mutagenesis in Spring and Winter Wheat Varieties
CRISPR/Cas technology has recently become the molecular tool of choice for gene function studies in plants as well as crop improvement. Wheat is a globally important staple crop with a well annotated genome and there is plenty of scope for improving its agriculturally important traits using genome editing technologies, such as CRISPR/Cas. As part of this study we targeted three different genes in hexaploid wheat Triticum aestivum: TaBAK1-2 in the spring cultivar Cadenza as well as Ta-eIF4E and Ta-eIF(iso)4E in winter cultivars Cezanne, Goncourt and Prevert. Primary transgenic lines carrying CRISPR/Cas-induced indels were successfully generated for all targeted genes. While BAK1 is an important regulator of plant immunity and development, Ta-eIF4E and Ta-eIF(iso)4E act as susceptibility (S) factors required for plant viruses from the Potyviridae family to complete their life cycle. We anticipate the resultant homozygous tabak1-2 mutant lines will facilitate studies on the involvement of BAK1 in immune responses in wheat, while ta-eif4e and ta-eif(iso)4e mutant lines have the potential to become a source of resistance to wheat spindle streak mosaic virus (WSSMV) and wheat yellow mosaic virus (WYMV), both of which are important pathogens of wheat. As winter wheat varieties are generally less amenable to genetic transformation, the successful experimental methodology for transformation and genome editing in winter wheat presented in this study will be of interest to the research community working with this crop
Integral Field Spectroscopy of 23 Spiral Bulges
We have obtained Integral Field Spectroscopy for 23 spiral bulges using
INTEGRAL on the William Herschel Telescope and SPIRAL on the Anglo-Australian
Telescope. This is the first 2D survey directed solely at the bulges of spiral
galaxies. Eleven galaxies of the sample do not have previous measurements of
the stellar velocity dispersion (sigma*). These data are designed to complement
our Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph program for estimating black hole
masses in the range 10^6-10^8M_sun using gas kinematics from nucleated disks.
These observations will serve to derive the stellar dynamical bulge properties
using the traditional Mgb and CaII triplets. We use both Cross Correlation and
Maximum Penalized Likelihood to determine projected sigma* in these systems and
present radial velocity fields, major axis rotation curves, curves of growth
and sigma* fields. Using the Cross Correlation to extract the low order 2D
stellar dynamics we generally see coherent radial rotation and irregular
velocity dispersion fields suggesting that sigma* is a non-trivial parameter to

Weakly Coupled Motion of Individual Layers in Ferromagnetic Resonance
We demonstrate a layer- and time-resolved measurement of ferromagnetic
resonance (FMR) in a Ni81Fe19 / Cu / Co93Zr7 trilayer structure. Time-resolved
x-ray magnetic circular dichroism has been developed in transmission, with
resonant field excitation at a FMR frequency of 2.3 GHz. Small-angle (to 0.2
degree), time-domain magnetization precession could be observed directly, and
resolved to individual layers through elemental contrast at Ni, Fe, and Co
edges. The phase sensitivity allowed direct measurement of relative phase lags
in the precession oscillations of individual elements and layers. A weak
ferromagnetic coupling, difficult to ascertain in conventional FMR
measurements, is revealed in the phase and amplitude response of individual

Hippocampal CA2 Activity Patterns Change over Time to a Larger Extent than between Spatial Contexts
SummaryThe hippocampal CA2 subregion has a different anatomical connectivity pattern within the entorhino-hippocampal circuit than either the CA1 or CA3 subregion. Yet major differences in the neuronal activity patterns of CA2 compared with the other CA subregions have not been reported. We show that standard spatial and temporal firing patterns of individual hippocampal principal neurons in behaving rats, such as place fields, theta modulation, and phase precession, are also present in CA2, but that the CA2 subregion differs substantially from the other CA subregions in its population coding. CA2 ensembles do not show a persistent code for space or for differences in context. Rather, CA2 activity patterns become progressively dissimilar over time periods of hours to days. The weak coding for a particular context is consistent with recent behavioral evidence that CA2 circuits preferentially support social, emotional, and temporal rather than spatial aspects of memory
