Light emission statistics in correlated random photonic nanostructures
Comunicación presentada en la Conferencia Española de Nanofotónica (CEN2012), celebrada en Carmona (Sevilla) del 1 al 4 de octubre de 2012.The statistical properties of light transport and
emission in disordered media has been a matter of
intense research during the last century. Being the
basis of coherent multiple scattering of wave
s well
known, the phenomenon itself is not yet fully
explored and understood. These multiple wave
scattering effects are at the heart of emerging
behaviors like Anderson localization of light and
electrons, band structure in crystalline solids or
photonic
crystals (PhC), among many others.Peer Reviewe
Unveiling the Dynamics of the Universe
We explore the dynamics and evolution of the Universe at early and late
times, focusing on both dark energy and extended gravity models and their
astrophysical and cosmological consequences. Modified theories of gravity not
only provide an alternative explanation for the recent expansion history of the
universe, but they also offer a paradigm fundamentally distinct from the
simplest dark energy models of cosmic acceleration. In this review, we perform
a detailed theoretical and phenomenological analysis of different modified
gravity models and investigate their consistency. We also consider the
cosmological implications of well motivated physical models of the early
universe with a particular emphasis on inflation and topological defects.
Astrophysical and cosmological tests over a wide range of scales, from the
solar system to the observable horizon, severely restrict the allowed models of
the Universe. Here, we review several observational probes -- including
gravitational lensing, galaxy clusters, cosmic microwave background temperature
and polarization, supernova and baryon acoustic oscillations measurements --
and their relevance in constraining our cosmological description of the
Universe.Comment: 94 pages, 14 figures. Review paper accepted for publication in a

Power quality phenomena in electrified railways: Conventional and new trends in power quality improvement toward public power systems
Nowadays, railway electrification is the most efficient way to power the trains. However, power quality (PQ) phenomena toward public power systems (PPSs) have always a main concern to the railway operators, especially when the single phase traction power system is interconnected to the three phase PPS. The last decades have witnessed an on going evolution of PQ improvement and traction power supply systems, contributing to diminish the negative impacts of AC railway networks on PQ of the three phase PPS. In this context, this paper presents a global overview of the PQ phenomena in AC railway electrification, as well as the impacts of the potential hazards on the safe operation of electrified railways. The paper also reviews PQ improvement methods from the early use of AC railway electrification until the emergence of the new power electronics devices in railways industry.Mohamed Tanta was supported by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia) PhD grant with a reference PD/BD/127815/2016. Comparative analysis of power electronics topologies to interface dc homes with the electrical ac power grid
This paper presents a comparative analysis of power electronics topologies that can be used to interface dc homes with a 230 V, 50 Hz ac power grid. Dc homes represent an essential asset for smart grids, since energy storage systems and renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic solar panels, operate in dc, as well as most of the electrical appliances used in domestic scenario. However, since the power grid operates in ac, it is necessary to convert voltage from ac to dc to properly supply a dc home. This conversion can be accomplished in several ways, with different power conversion stages. In this context, this paper analyzes three different possibilities that can be used to perform the interface between the ac power grid and a dc home: (1) ac-dc converter using a low frequency transformer; (2) ac-dc and dc-dc converters using a high frequency transformer; (3) ac-ac and ac-dc converters using a medium frequency transformer. These three possibilities are compared in terms of efficiency, total power factor and total harmonic distortion of the ac power grid. The results were obtained by means of a simulation model based on the internal parameters of the power semiconductors. This work has been supported by FCT –Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2019. Benefits of spine stabilization with biodegradable scaffolds in spinal cord injured rats
Spine stabilization upon spinal cord injury (SCI) is a standard procedure in clinical practice, but rarely employed in experimental models. Moreover, the application of biodegradable biomaterials for this would come as an advantage as it would eliminate the presence of a nondegradable prosthesis within the vertebral bone. Therefore, in the present work, we propose the use of a new biodegradable device specifically developed for spine stabilization in a rat model of SCI. A 3D scaffold based on a blend of starch with polycaprolactone was implanted, replacing delaminated vertebra, in male Wistar rats with a T8-T9 spinal hemisection. The impact of spinal stabilization on the locomotor behavior was then evaluated for a period of 12 weeks. Locomotor evaluation—assessed by Basso, Beatie, and Bresnahan test; rotarod; and open field analysis—revealed that injured rats subjected to spine stabilization significantly improved their motor performance, including higher coordination and rearing activity when compared with SCI rats without stabilization. Histological analysis further revealed that the presence of the scaffolds not only stabilized the area, but also simultaneously prevented the infiltration of the injury site by connective tissue. Overall, these results reveal that SCI stabilization using a biodegradable scaffold at the vertebral bone level leads to an improvement of the motor deficits and is a relevant element for the successful treatment of SCI.The authors would like to acknowledge the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (Doctoral fellowship

Meaning of the Pap smear for health student
OBJECTIVE: To describe the meanings of the Pap smear for health students. METHODS: Descriptive study, qualitative approach, with 45 students from the health area of a Higher Education Institution, in the Northeast of Brazil. Data were collected in 2017, by means of interviews, processed in the IRaMuTeQ software, and pushed by the Descending Hierarchical Classification. RESULTS: The students recognize that the education in health is the best strategy to prevent cervical cancer, as it is an essential tool in primary care and must be performed by health professionals. CONCLUSION: The meanings found by the students revealed a concern with their role in the Pap smear and, therefore, considers it very important to improve their knowledge in this area so that they can provide quality care to women seeking to prevent cervical cancer.OBJETIVO: Descrever os significados do exame de Papanicolaou para estudantes da saúde. Salinity studies in Mar Menor coastal lagoon
An experiment with different AUVs was carried out in the Mar Menor Coastal Lagoon from October 31 to November 5 in order to measure and assess the influence of the water from the Mar Menor on the adjacent area of the Mediterranean. This was carried out as a result of the meeting held between several institutions from the Iberian Peninsula and EEUU (see Vilanova Marine Science/Robotics Meeting 2010). The experiment was to launch several AUVs at the same time in different zones of the Mediterranean and Mar Menor lagoon. AUVs took salinity data trying to do a coordinated mission during two operative days (November 3 and November 5). Others days of the experiment were used to the vehicle’s preparation and error correction (November 2 and November 4). This paper presents the steps followed in preparation and operative days with the set of AUVs. This paper presents also the salinity results obtained during these missions.Postprint (published version
