New flaring of an ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 1365
We have studied a highly variable ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in the
Fornax galaxy NGC 1365, with a series of 12 Chandra and XMM-Newton observations
between 2002 and 2006. In 2006 April, the source peaked at a luminosity ~ 3 x
10^{40} erg/s in the 0.3-10 keV band (similar to the maximum luminosity found
by ASCA in 1995), and declined on an e-folding timescale ~ 3 days. The X-ray
spectrum is always dominated by a broad power-law-like component. When the
source is seen at X-ray luminosities ~ 10^{40} erg/s, an additional soft
thermal component (which we interpret as emission from the accretion disk)
contributes ~ 1/4 of the X-ray flux; when the luminosity is higher, ~ 3 x
10^{40} erg/s, the thermal component is not detected and must contribute < 10%
of the flux. At the beginning of the decline, ionized absorption is detected
around 0.5-2 keV; it is a possible signature of a massive outflow. The
power-law is always hard, with a photon index Gamma ~ 1.7 (and even flatter at
times), as is generally the case with bright ULXs. We speculate that this
source and perhaps most other bright ULXs are in a high/hard state: as the
accretion rate increases well above the Eddington limit, more and more power is
extracted from the inner region of the inflow through non-radiative channels,
and is used to power a Comptonizing corona, jet or wind. The observed thermal
component comes from the standard outer disk; the transition radius between
outer standard disk and Comptonizing inner region moves further out and to
lower disk temperatures as the accretion rate increases. This produces the
observed appearance of a large, cool disk. Based on X-ray luminosity and
spectral arguments, we suggest that this accreting black hole has a likely mass
~ 50-150 Msun (even without accounting for possible beaming).Comment: 14 pages, to appear in MNRA
On the distortions in calculated GW parameters during slanted atmospheric soundings
The significant distortions introduced in the measured atmospheric gravity wavelengths by soundings other than those in vertical and horizontal directions, are discussed as a function of the elevation angle of the sounding path and the gravity wave aspect ratio. Under- or overestimation of real vertical wavelengths during the measurement process depends on the value of these two parameters. The consequences of these distortions on the calculation of the energy and the vertical flux of horizontal momentum are analyzed and discussed in the context of two experimental limb satellite setups: GPS-LEO radio occultations and TIMED/SABER ((Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry/Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere-Energetics and Dynamics)) measurements. Possible discrepancies previously found between the momentum flux calculated from satellite temperature profiles, on site and from model simulations, may to a certain degree be attributed to these distortions. A recalculation of previous momentum flux climatologies based on these considerations seems to be a difficult goal.Fil: de la Torre, Alejandro. Hard and soft spectral states of ULXs
I discuss some differences between the observed spectral states of
ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) and the canonical scheme of spectral states
defined in Galactic black holes. The standard interpretation of ULXs with a
curved spectrum, or a moderately steep power-law with soft excess and
high-energy downturn, is that they are an extension of the very high state, up
to luminosities ~ 1 to 3 L_{Edd}. Two competing models are Comptonization in a
warm corona, and slim disk; I suggest bulk motion Comptonization in the
radiatively-driven outflow as another possibility. The interpretation of ULXs
with a hard power-law spectrum is more problematic. Some of them remain in that
state over a large range of luminosities; others switch directly to a curved
state without going through a canonical high/soft state. I suggest that those
ULXs are in a high/hard state not seen in Galactic black holes; that state may
overlap with the low/hard state at lower accretion rates, and extend all the
way to Eddington accretion rates. If some black holes can reach Eddington
accretion rates without switching to a standard-disk-dominated state, it is
also possible that they never quench their steady jets.Comment: 6 pages, accepted for publication in the Astronomische Nachrichten,

Orographic and convective gravity waves above the Alps and Andes mountains during GPS radio occultation events – a case study

transparencia.Fil: De la Vega, Clara. Universidad Nacional de San Juan. Instituto de Investigaciones Socieconómicas..Fil: Soria, Valentina . Universidad Nacional de San Juan. Predictive Control Applied to a Solar Desalination Plant Connected to a Greenhouse with Daily Variation of Irrigation Water Demand
The water deficit in the Mediterranean area is a known matter severely affecting agriculture. One way to avoid the aquifers’ exploitation is to supply water to crops by using thermal desalination processes. Moreover, in order to guarantee long-term sustainability, the required thermal energy for the desalination process can be provided by solar energy. This paper shows simulations for a case study in which a solar multi-effect distillation plant produces water for irrigation purposes. Detailed models of the involved systems are the base of a predictive controller to operate the desalination plant and fulfil the water demanded by the crops
