Just luck: an experimental study of risk taking and fairness
Choices involving risk significantly affect the distribution of income and wealth in society. This paper reports the results of the first experiment, to our knowledge, to study fairness views about risk-taking, specifically whether such views are based chiefly on ex ante opportunities or on ex post outcomes. We find that, even though many participants focus exclusively on ex ante opportunities, most favor some redistribution ex post. Many participants also make a distinction between ex post inequalities that reflect differences in luck and ex post inequalities that reflect differences in choices. These findings apply to both stakeholders and impartial spectators.fairness; justice; risk
Observation of modified hadronization in relativistic Au+Au collisions: a promising signature for deconfined quark-gluon matter
Measurements of identified particles from Au+Au collisions at
GeV are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on nuclear
modification, baryon-to-meson ratios, and elliptic flow at intermediate
transverse momentum ( GeV/c). Possible connections between (1)
these measurements, (2) the running coupling for static quark anti-quark pairs
at finite temperature, and (3) the creation of a deconfined quark-gluon phase
are presented. Modifications to hadronization in Au+Au collisions are proposed
as a likely signature for the creation of deconfined colored matter.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, invited talk at the Strange Quark Matter 2004

Evidence from Identified Particles for Active Quark and Gluon Degrees of Freedom
Measurements of intermediate pT (1.5 < pT < 5.0 GeV/c) identified particle
distributions in heavy ion collisions at SPS and RHIC energies display striking
dependencies on the number of constituent quarks in the corresponding hadron.
One finds that elliptic flow at intermediate pT follows a constituent quark
scaling law as predicted by models of hadron formation through coalescence. In
addition, baryon production is also found to increase with event multiplicity
much faster than meson production. The rate of increase is similar for all
baryons, and seemingly independent of mass. This indicates that the number of
constituent quarks determines the multiplicity dependence of identified hadron
production at intermediate pT. We review these measurements and interpret the
experimental findings.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, proceedings for SQM2006 conference in Los Angele
Suppression of hole-hole scattering in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures under uniaxial compression
Resistance, magnetoresistance and their temperature dependencies have been
investigated in the 2D hole gas at a [001] p-GaAs/AlGaAs
heterointerface under [110] uniaxial compression. Analysis performed in the
frame of hole-hole scattering between carriers in the two spin splitted
subbands of the ground heavy hole state indicates, that h-h scattering is
strongly suppressed by uniaxial compression. The decay time of the
relative momentum reveals 4.5 times increase at a uniaxial compression of 1.3
kbar.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. submitted to Phys.Rev.

Finite Size Scaling for Low Energy Excitations in Integer Heisenberg Spin Chains
In this paper we study the finite size scaling for low energy excitations of
and Heisenberg chains, using the density matrix renormalization
group technique. A crossover from behavior (with as the chain length)
for medium chain length to scaling for long chain length is found for
excitations in the continuum band as the length of the open chain increases.
Topological spin excitations are shown to give rise to the two lowest
energy states for both open and periodic chains. In periodic chains these
two excitations are ``confined'' next to each other, while for open chains they
are two free edge 1/2 spins. The finite size scaling of the two lowest energy
excitations of open chains is determined by coupling the two free edge
spins. The gap and correlation length for open Heisenberg chains
are shown to be 0.082 (in units of the exchange ) and 47, respectively.Comment: 4 pages (two column), PS file, to be appear as a PRB Brief Repor
Magnetic Impurity in the two-dimensional Heisenberg Antiferromagnet
We analyze the ground state properties of the two-dimensional quantum
antiferromagnet with a S=1/2 Kondo impurity. Perturbation theory around the
strong Kondo coupling limit is developed and the results compared with studies,
based on exact diagonalization of small clusters. We find that at intermediate
coupling the impurity is partially screened and the magnetization locally
suppressed. A local singlet between the impurity and the host spin is formed
asymptotically.Comment: 12 REVTex pages, 4 Postscript figure
The Intrinsic Origin of Spin Echoes in Dipolar Solids Generated by Strong Pi Pulses
In spectroscopy, it is conventional to treat pulses much stronger than the
linewidth as delta-functions. In NMR, this assumption leads to the prediction
that pi pulses do not refocus the dipolar coupling. However, NMR spin echo
measurements in dipolar solids defy these conventional expectations when more
than one pi pulse is used. Observed effects include a long tail in the CPMG
echo train for short delays between pi pulses, an even-odd asymmetry in the
echo amplitudes for long delays, an unusual fingerprint pattern for
intermediate delays, and a strong sensitivity to pi-pulse phase. Experiments
that set limits on possible extrinsic causes for the phenomena are reported. We
find that the action of the system's internal Hamiltonian during any real pulse
is sufficient to cause the effects. Exact numerical calculations, combined with
average Hamiltonian theory, identify novel terms that are sensitive to
parameters such as pulse phase, dipolar coupling, and system size.
Visualization of the entire density matrix shows a unique flow of quantum
coherence from non-observable to observable channels when applying repeated pi
pulses.Comment: 24 pages, 27 figures. Revised from helpful referee comments. Added

Excitation spectrum of the S=1/2 quantum spin ladder with frustration: elementary quasiparticles and many-particle bound states
We study the excitation spectrum of the two-chain S=1/2 Heisenberg spin
ladder with additional inter-chain second-neighbor frustrating interactions.
The one and two-particle excitations are analyzed by using a mapping of the
model onto a Bose gas of hard-core triplets. We find that low-lying singlet and
triplet two-particle bound states are present and their binding energy
increases with increasing frustration. In addition, many-particle bound states
are found by a combination of variational and exact diagonalization techniques.
We prove that the larger the number of bound quasiparticles the larger the
binding energy. Thus the excitation spectrum has a complex structure and
consists of elementary triplets and collective many-particle singlet and
triplet excitations which generally mix with the elementary ones.
The model exhibits a quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic
ladder phase (small frustration) into Haldane phase (effectively ferromagnetic
ladder for large frustration). We argue that near the transition point the
spectrum in both triplet and singlet channels becomes gapless. The excitation
wave function is dominated by large-size bound states which leads to the
vanishing of the quasiparticle residue.Comment: RevTeX, 23 pages, 12 figure
