Fault-tolerant Quantum Communication with Minimal Physical Requirements
We describe a novel protocol for a quantum repeater which enables long
distance quantum communication through realistic, lossy photonic channels.
Contrary to previous proposals, our protocol incorporates active purification
of arbitrary errors at each step of the protocol using only two qubits at each
repeater station. Because of these minimal physical requirements, the present
protocol can be realized in simple physical systems such as solid-state single
photon emitters. As an example, we show how nitrogen vacancy color centers in
diamond can be used to implement the protocol, using the nuclear and electronic

Femtoscopy of the system shape fluctuations in heavy ion collisions
Dipole, triangular, and higher harmonic flow that have an origin in the
initial density fluctuations has gained a lot of attention as they can provide
additional important information about the dynamical properties (e.g.
viscosity) of the system. The fluctuations in the initial geometry should be
also reflected in the detail shape and velocity field of the system at
freeze-out. In this talk I discuss the possibility to measure such fluctuations

Agonist-Induced Endocytosis of Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptors: Relationship to Stimulated Phosphoinositide Turnover
The ability of muscarinic cholinergic receptors to activate phosphoinositide turnover following agonist-induced internalization has been investigated. Incubation of SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells with oxotremorine-M resulted in a time-dependent endocytosis of both muscarinic receptors and Î subunits of G q and G 11 , but not of isoforms of phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C, into a subfraction of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (V 1 ). Agonist-induced increases in diacylglycerol mass and in 32 P-phosphatidate labeling, much of which was of the tetraenoic species, were also observed in the V 1 fraction, but these increases persisted when the agonist-induced translocation of receptors into the V 1 fraction was blocked. All enzymes of the phosphoinositide cycle were detectable in the V 1 fraction. However, with the exception of phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase, none was enriched when compared with cell lysates. Both 32 P-labeling studies and enzyme assays point to a very limited capacity of this fraction to synthesize phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate, whereas the synthesis of phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate is robust. These results indicate that endocytosed receptors do not appear to retain their ability to activate phosphoinositide turnover. The availability of the substrate for phospholipase C, phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate, may be one factor that limits the activity of muscarinic receptors in this subcellular compartment.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65644/1/j.1471-4159.1997.68041473.x.pd
Cytoskeletal and Phosphoinositide Requirements for Muscarinic Receptor Signaling to Focal Adhesion Kinase and Paxillin
The mechanism whereby agonist occupancy of muscarinic cholinergic receptors elicits an increased tyrosine phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and paxillin has been examined. Addition of oxotremorine-M to SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells resulted in rapid increases in the phosphorylation of FAK ( t 1/2 = 2 min) and paxillin that were independent of integrin-extracellular matrix interactions, cell attachment, and the production of phosphoinositide-derived second messengers. In contrast, the increased tyrosine phosphorylations of FAK and paxillin were inhibited by inclusion of either cytochalasin D or mevastatin, agents that disrupt the cytoskeleton. Furthermore, phosphorylation of FAK and paxillin could be prevented by addition of either wortmannin or LY-294002, under conditions in which the synthesis of phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate was markedly attenuated. Entangling many atomic ensembles through laser manipulation
We propose an experimentally feasible scheme to generate
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) type of maximal entanglement between many
atomic ensembles based on laser manipulation and single-photon detection. The
scheme, with inherent fault tolerance to the dominant noise and efficient
scaling of the efficiency with the number of ensembles, allows to maximally
entangle many atomic ensemble within the reach of current technology. Such a
maximum entanglement of many ensembles has wide applications in demonstration
of quantum nonlocality, high-precision spectroscopy, and quantum information

Evidence from Identified Particles for Active Quark and Gluon Degrees of Freedom
Measurements of intermediate pT (1.5 < pT < 5.0 GeV/c) identified particle
distributions in heavy ion collisions at SPS and RHIC energies display striking
dependencies on the number of constituent quarks in the corresponding hadron.
One finds that elliptic flow at intermediate pT follows a constituent quark
scaling law as predicted by models of hadron formation through coalescence. In
addition, baryon production is also found to increase with event multiplicity
much faster than meson production. The rate of increase is similar for all
baryons, and seemingly independent of mass. This indicates that the number of
constituent quarks determines the multiplicity dependence of identified hadron
production at intermediate pT. We review these measurements and interpret the
