    Investigation of the electrochemical properties of a propylene carbonate-derived SEI in an ethylene carbonate-based solution

    Herein, we aim to explore and analyze the influence of electrolytes on the creation of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) within ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC)-based electrolyte solutions. Our investigation reveals that despite variations in the charge consumption during SEI formation, a comparable SEI is generated in a high-concentration PC-based electrolyte as observed in an EC-based electrolyte. However, it is noteworthy that the SEI originating from the PC-based electrolyte exhibits a significantly higher resistance to lithium ion transport when compared to the SEI formed from the EC-based electrolyte. Moreover, an increase in the charge transfer resistance at the graphite/electrolyte interface is observed in the PC-based electrolyte. These significant findings strongly imply that the choice of electrolyte solvent is a critical factor that must be taken into consideration in order to achieve the formation of an effective SEI

    Force-sensitive resistors to measure the distribution of weight in the pads of sound dogs in static standing position

    The purpose of this study was to measure how weight is distributed in the pads of each of the 4 limbs of dogs and evaluate the intra-investigator reproducibility and inter-investigator reliability of the measurement method. Eight dogs were examined 3 times a day by 3 investigators at 1 week intervals for 3 weeks to determine the weight distribution to each of the pads. The force-sensitive resistor was used for measurement and specific software (PetLAB2) was used to calculate the weight applied to each pad. The intra-investigator reproducibility showed moderate to good reliability (ICC range, 0.575-0.873) and the inter-investigator reliability was moderate (ICC range, 0.525-0.746). Based on this study, it can be observed whether the weight distributed to each pad approaches the normal value after treatment in patients with orthopaedic and neurologic diseases. It is expected that this experimental method will be one of the objective indicators to evaluate the degree of recovery in patients with orthopaedic and neurologic diseases

    Overexpression of Arabidopsis thaliana brassinosteroid-related acyltransferase 1 gene induces brassinosteroid-deficient phenotypes in creeping bentgrass

    Brassinosteroids (BRs) are naturally occurring steroidal hormones that play diverse roles in various processes during plant growth and development. Thus, genetic manipulation of endogenous BR levels might offer a way of improving the agronomic traits of crops, including plant architecture and stress tolerance. In this study, we produced transgenic creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) overexpressing a BR-inactivating enzyme, Arabidopsis thaliana BR-related acyltransferase 1 (AtBAT1), which is known to catalyze the conversion of BR intermediates to inactive acylated conjugates. After putative transgenic plants were selected using herbicide resistance assay, genomic integration of the AtBAT1 gene was confirmed by genomic PCR and Southern blot analysis, and transgene expression was validated by northern blot analysis. The transgenic creeping bentgrass plants exhibited BR-deficient phenotypes, including reduced plant height with shortened internodes (i.e., semi-dwarf), reduced leaf growth rates with short, wide, and thick architecture, high chlorophyll contents, decreased numbers of vascular bundles, and large lamina joint bending angles (i.e., erect leaves). Subsequent analyses showed that the transgenic plants had significantly reduced amounts of endogenous BR intermediates, including typhasterol, 6-deoxocastasterone, and castasterone. Moreover, the AtBAT1 transgenic plants displayed drought tolerance as well as delayed senescence. Therefore, the results of the present study demonstrate that overexpression of an Arabidopsis BR-inactivating enzyme can reduce the endogenous levels of BRs in creeping bentgrass resulting in BR-deficient phenotypes, indicating that the AtBAT1 gene from a dicot plant is also functional in the monocot crop.111Ysciescopu

    Thyroid function in obese Korean children and adolescents: Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013ā€“2015

    Purpose In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on thyroid function in pediatric obese patients, but no nationwide study evaluating the relationship between thyroid function and obesity has yet been conducted in Korea. We aimed to evaluate thyroid dysfunction in obese Korean children. Methods We analyzed the associations between obesity and thyroid hormone levels among 975 Korean boys and girls aged 10ā€“18 years and who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VI (2013ā€“2015). Results Average serum thyrotropin (TSH) and serum free thyroxine (fT4) levels in the nonobese group were 2.7Ā±0.1 Ī¼IU/mL and 1.3Ā±0.0 ng/dL, respectively, and those in the overweight group were 3.1Ā±0.2 Ī¼IU/mL and 1.2Ā±0.0 ng/dL. Serum TSH level was significantly higher in the abdominal obesity group than in the normal group (P=0.023). fT4 level was significantly lower in both the overweight and abdominal obesity groups than in the normal group (P<0.001, P=0.014). Serum TSH level was associated positively with abdominal obesity and levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride. Serum fT4 level was negatively correlated with abdominal obesity (P=0.014). Conclusions Korean children with abdominal obesity showed increased TSH and decreased fT4 levels compared to normal children

    The effect of low-dose intravenous bisphosphonate treatment on osteoporosis in children with quadriplegic cerebral palsy

    PurposeQuadriplegic children with cerebral palsy are more susceptible to osteoporosis because of various risk factors that interfere with bone metabolism. Pamidronate is effective for pediatric osteoporosis, but there are no guidelines for optimal dosage or duration of treatment in quadriplegic children with osteoporosis. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of low-dose pamidronate treatment in these patients.MethodsTen quadriplegic patients on antiepileptic drugs (6 male, 4 female patients; mean age, 10.9Ā±5.76 years), with osteoporosis and gross motor function classification system level V, were treated with pamidronate (0.5ā€“1.0 mg/kg/day, 2 consecutive days) every 3ā€“4 months in a single institution. The patients received oral supplements of calcium and vitamin D before and during treatment. The lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) z score and biochemical markers of bone metabolism were measured regularly during treatment.ResultsThe main underlying disorder was perinatal hypoxic brain damage (40%, 4 of 10). The mean cumulative dose of pamidronate was 4.49Ā±2.22 mg/kg/yr, and the mean treatment period was 10.8Ā±3.32 months. The BMD z score of the lumbar spine showed a significant increase from āˆ’4.22Ā±1.24 before treatment to āˆ’2.61Ā±1.69 during treatment (P=0.008). Alkaline phosphatase decreased during treatmentn (P=0.037). Significant adverse drug reactions and new fractures were not reported.ConclusionLow-dose pamidronate treatment for quadriplegic children with cerebral palsy increased lumbar BMD and reduced the incidence of fracture

    Slow and soft passage through tipping point of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation in a changing climate

    Paleo-proxy records suggest that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) exhibits a threshold for an abrupt change, a so-called tipping point. A classical bifurcation theory, a basis of the tipping dynamics of AMOC implicitly assumes that the tipping point is fixed. However, when a system is subjected to time-varying forcing (e.g., AMOC exposed to ice meltwater) an actual tipping point can be overshot due to delayed tipping, referred to as the slow passage effect. Here, using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity and a low-order model with freshwater forcing, we show that the tipping point of AMOC is largely delayed by the slow passage effect. It causes a large tipping lag of up to 1300 years, and strongly relaxes the abruptness of tipping as well. We further demonstrate that the tipping modulation can actively occur in past, present, and future climates by quantifying the effect during Dansgaard-Oeschger events, meltwater pulse 1A (MWP-1A), and current Greenland ice sheet melting. The suggested slow passage effect may explain the observed lagged AMOC collapse to MWP-1A of about 1000 years and provides implications tipping risk in the future

    Radish microgreens produced without substrate in a vertical multi-layered growing unit are rich in nutritional metabolites

    Growing microgreens on trays without substrate in a vertical multilayered growing unit offers several advantages over traditional agriculture methods. This study investigated the yield performance and nutritional quality of five selections of radish microgreens grown in sprouting trays, without a substrate using only water, in an indoor multilayer cultivation system using artificial light. Various parameters were measured, including fresh weight, dry matter, chlorophyll, minerals, amino acids, phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, vitamin C, glucosinolates, and antioxidant activity with four different in vitro assays. After ten days, the biomass had increased by 6-10 times, and the dry matter varied from 4.75-7.65%. The highest yield was obtained from ā€˜Asia redā€™, while the lowest was from ā€˜Koregon redā€™. However, ā€˜Koregon redā€™ and ā€˜Asia redā€™ had the highest dry matter. ā€˜Asia redā€™ was found to have the highest levels of both Chls and vitamin C compared to the other cultivars, while ā€˜Koregon redā€™ exhibited the highest levels of total phenolics and flavonoids. Although variations in the levels of individual glucosinolates were observed, there were no significant differences in the total content of glucosinolates among the five cultivars. ā€˜Asia purpleā€™ had the highest anthocyanin content, while ā€˜Asia green 2ā€™ had the lowest. The K, Mg, and Na concentrations were significantly highest in ā€˜Asia green 2ā€™, and the highest Ca was recorded in ā€˜Asia purpleā€™. Overall, ā€˜Asia purpleā€™ and ā€˜Koregon redā€™ were the best cultivars in terms of nutritional quality among the tested radish microgreens. These cultivars exhibited high levels of dry weight, total phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, essential and total amino acids, and antioxidant activities. Moreover, the implementation of this vertical cultivation method for microgreens, which relies solely on water and seeds known for their tall shoots during the sprouting could hold promise as a sustainable approach. This method can effectively be utilized for cultivar screening and fulfilling the nutritional and functional needs of the population while minimizing the environmental impacts associated with traditional agriculture practices

    The Safety and efficacy of a new self-expandable intratracheal nitinol stent for the tracheal collapse in dogs

    To evaluate the potential utility of a self-expandable intratracheal nitinol stent with flared ends for the treatment of tracheal collapse in dogs, endotracheal stenting therapy was performed under fluoroscopic guidance in four dogs with severe tracheal collapse. During the 4 to 7 month follow-up, after stent implantation, clinical signs, including dyspnea and respiratory distress, dramatically improved in all dogs. The radiographs showed that the implanted stents improved the tracheal collapse, and there were no side effects such as collapse, shortening or migration of the stents. In conclusion, the self-expandable intratracheal nitinol stents provided adequate stability to the trachea and were effective for attenuating the clinical signs associated with severe tracheal collapse
