    A Review of Suicide Risk Assessment Tools and Their Measured Psychometric Properties in Korea

    While there has been a slew of review studies on suicide measurement tools until now, there were not any reviews focusing on suicide assessment tools available in Korea. This review aimed to examine the psychometric properties of tools developed in Korea or the translated versions from the original tools in their foreign language and to identify potential improvements and supplements for these tools. A literature search was done using the Korean academic information search service, Research Information Service System, to identify the suicide measures to be included in this review. Abstracts were screened to identify which measures were used to assess suicide-related factors. Based on the established inclusion and exclusion criteria, 18 tools remained and we assessed their psychometric properties. The current review indicated several major findings. First, many of the tools did not report predictive validity and even those with predictive validity were based on past suicide attempts. Second, some of the tools overlooked the interactive component for the cause of suicide. In addition, information to supplement the self-reported and clinician-administered reports by collecting reports from the subjects' families and acquaintances is needed. It is also important to develop a screening tool that examines other aspects of an individual's personal life, including unemployment, bereavement, divorce, and childhood trauma. Moreover, tools that have been studied in more diverse groups of the population are needed to increase external validity. Finally, the linguistic translation of the tools into Korean needs to consider other cultural, social, and psychological factors of the sample of interest

    Development of a hard X-ray detector for measuring continuous spectra generated by runaway electrons in VEST

    A hard X-ray measurement system is developed to observe the activities of runaway electrons in versatile experiment spherical torus (VEST) at Seoul National University. The detection system provides information on the generation of runaway electrons by detecting hard X-rays from its bremsstrahlung radiation. To acquire such information, the X-ray spectrum at several tens to hundreds of keV at the maximum is reconstructed using signals from four thin scintillation detectors with different energy sensitivities, and the spectrum is converted to the original X-ray energy. The unfolding process is implemented by an artificial neural network model trained using a measured X-ray spectrum generated by an X-ray tube source at 50 to 320 keV. The system would reveal the generation mechanism of runaway electrons during plasma discharges with various MHD activities in VEST to mitigate and suppress runaway electrons.N

    Experiences Providing Medical Assistance during the Sewol Ferry Disaster Using Traditional Korean Medicine

    Background. This study aimed to investigate medical records using traditional Korean medicine (TKM) in Sewol Ferry disaster in 2014 and further explore the possible role of traditional medicine in disaster situation. Methods. After Sewol Ferry accident, 3 on-site tents for TKM assistance by the Association of Korean Medicine (AKOM) in Jindo area were installed. The AKOM mobilized volunteer TKM doctors and assistants and dispatched each on-site tent in three shifts within 24 hours. Anyone could use on-site tent without restriction and TKM treatments including herb medicine were administered individually. Results. The total of 1,860 patients were treated during the periods except for medical assistance on the barge. Most patients were diagnosed in musculoskeletal diseases (66.4%) and respiratory diseases (7.4%) and circulatory diseases (8.4%) followed. The most frequently used herbal medicines were Shuanghe decoction (80 days), Su He Xiang Wan (288 pills), and Wuji powder (73 days). Conclusions. TKM in medical assistance can be helpful to rescue worker or group life people in open shelter when national disasters occur.     Design Choices in the Infant Habituation Paradigm: A Pre-registered Crowd-Sourced Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Methodological variations and inconsistency in reporting practices pose considerable challenges to the interpretation and generalizability of outcomes derived from the habituation paradigm -one of the most prominent methods for studying infant cognition. In a systematic review, we map out experimental design choices in habituation study samples aged 0-18 months using looking time measures. 2,853 records published in peer-reviewed journals between 2000-2019 were extracted from PsycInfo and Web of Science. 781 (27.4%) papers were deemed eligible after screening (Fleiss kappa = .60, 95%, CI[.40 -.80], 6 blind raters). We adopt a collaborative, multi-lab approach for crowd-sourced data collection involving raters from the developmental research community. In a meta-analysis, we assess the impact of habituation detection criteria on the novelty effect size, moderated by age. Our results will inform a detailed evaluation of experimental designs and a set of recommendations to improve research and reporting practices in infant habituation research
