Counterterms in Gravity in the Light-Front Formulation and a D=2 Conformal-like Symmetry in Gravity
In this paper we discuss gravity in the light-front formulation (light-cone
gauge) and show how possible counterterms arise. We find that Poincare
invariance is not enough to find the three-point counterterms uniquely.
Higher-spin fields can intrude and mimic three-point higher derivative gravity
terms. To select the correct term we have to use the remaining
reparametrization invariance that exists after the gauge choice. We finally
sketch how the corresponding programme for N=8 Supergravity should work.Comment: 26 pages, references added, published versio
Double-Well Potential : The WKB Approximation with Phase Loss and Anharmonicity Effect
We derive a general WKB energy splitting formula in a double-well potential
by incorporating both phase loss and anharmonicity effect in the usual WKB
approximation. A bare application of the phase loss approach to the usual WKB
method gives better results only for large separation between two potential
minima. In the range of substantial tunneling, however, the phase loss approach
with anharmonicity effect considered leads to a great improvement on the

Instantonic approach to triple well potential
By using a usual instanton method we obtain the energy splitting due to
quantum tunneling through the triple well barrier. It is shown that the term
related to the midpoint of the energy splitting in propagator is quite
different from that of double well case, in that it is proportional to the

The Effects of d_{x^2-y^2}-d_{xy} Mixing on Vortex Structures and Magnetization
The structure of an isolated single vortex and the vortex lattice, and the
magnetization in a -wave superconductor are investigated within a
phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model including the mixture of the
-wave and -wave symmetry. The isolated single vortex
structure in a week magnetic field is studied both numerically and
asymptotically. Near the upper critical field , the vortex lattice

The Diversity of Diffuse Ly Nebulae around Star-Forming Galaxies at High Redshift
We report the detection of diffuse Ly emission, or Ly halos
(LAHs), around star-forming galaxies at and in the NOAO
Deep Wide-Field Survey Bo\"otes field. Our samples consist of a total of
1400 galaxies, within two separate regions containing spectroscopically
confirmed galaxy overdensities. They provide a unique opportunity to
investigate how the LAH characteristics vary with host galaxy large-scale
environment and physical properties. We stack Ly images of different
samples defined by these properties and measure their median LAH sizes by
decomposing the stacked Ly radial profile into a compact galaxy-like
and an extended halo-like component. We find that the exponential scale-length
of LAHs depends on UV continuum and Ly luminosities, but not on
Ly equivalent widths or galaxy overdensity parameters. The full
samples, which are dominated by low UV-continuum luminosity Ly emitters
(), exhibit LAH sizes of 5kpc. However, the
most UV- or Ly-luminous galaxies have more extended halos with
scale-lengths of 7kpc. The stacked Ly radial profiles decline
more steeply than recent theoretical predictions that include the contributions
from gravitational cooling of infalling gas and from low-level star formation
in satellites. On the other hand, the LAH extent matches what one would expect
for photons produced in the galaxy and then resonantly scattered by gas in an
outflowing envelope. The observed trends of LAH sizes with host galaxy
properties suggest that the physical conditions of the circumgalactic medium
(covering fraction, HI column density, and outflow velocity) change with halo
mass and/or star-formation rates.Comment: published in ApJ, minor proof corrections applie
Electroweak Contributions to Squark Pair Production at the LHC
In this paper we compute electroweak contributions to the production of
squark pairs at hadron colliders. These include the exchange of electroweak
gauge bosons in the s-channel as well as electroweak gaugino exchange in the t-
and/or u-channel. In many cases these can interfere with the dominant QCD
contributions. As a result, we find sizable contributions to the production of
two SU(2) doublet squarks. At the LHC, they amount to 10 to 20% for typical
mSUGRA (or CMSSM) scenarios, but in more general scenarios they can vary
between -40 and +55%, depending on size and sign of the SU(2) gaugino mass. The
electroweak contribution to the total squark pair production rate at the LHC is
