Objective: To estimate and compare age trends and the disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) of the population over 60 years old in 2018 in Jiangxi Province, China, by sex and urbanā€“rural areas. Methods: The model life table was employed to estimate the age-specific mortality rate by sex and urbanā€“rural areas, based on the Summary of Health Statistics of Jiangxi Province in 2018 and the Sixth National Health Service survey of Jiangxi Province. DFLE and its ratio to life expectancy (LE) were obtained by the Sullivan method. Results: In 2018, the DFLE among people over 60 is 17.157 years for men and is 19.055 years for women, accounting for 89.7% and 86.5% of their LE respectively. The DFLE/LE of men is higher than that of women at all ages. LE and DFLE are higher for the population in urban areas than in rural areas. For women, DFLE/LE is higher in urban areas than in rural areas (except at ages 75 and 80). Urban men have a higher DFLE/LE than rural men (except at age 85). The difference in DFLE between men and women over 60 years is 1.898 years, of which 2.260 years are attributable to the mortality rate, and 0.362 years are due to the disability-free prevalence. In addition, the difference in DFLE between urbanā€“rural elderly over 60 years old is mostly attributed to the mortality rate by gender (male: 0.902/1.637; female: 0.893/1.454), but the impact of the disability-free rate cannot be ignored either (male: 0.735/1.637; female: 0.561/1.454). Conclusions: The increase in DFLE is accompanied by the increase in LE, but with increased age, DFLE/LE gradually decreases. With advancing age, the effect of disability on elderly people becomes more severe. The government administration must implement some preventive actions to improve health awareness and the life quality of the elderly. Rural elderly; rural women in particular, need to be paid more attention and acquire more health care

Well-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays were assembled on activated carbon fibers by a stepwise sequence of sol-gel and hydrothermal synthesis methods. These ZnO nanorod arrays on activated carbon fibers having different characteristics such as surface area, rod concentration, aspect ratio and defect level, were applied as catalysts for the photodegradation of an aqueous methylene blue solution. They showed very promising methylene blue adsorbility in the dark (ca. 0.025ā€“0.031 mg methylene blue māˆ’2 catalyst, vs. 0.072 mg methylene blue māˆ’2 activated carbon fibers). Significantly, the defect level of ZnO nanorod arrays has a major effect on the turnover frequency compared to other characteristics. A synergistic effect between activated carbon fibers and ZnO nanocrystals on enhancing turnover frequency was more significant for the well-assembled ZnO nanorod arrays on activated carbon fibers catalysts compared to the mechanically mixed ZnO powder with activated carbon fibers catalyst. Further, turnover frequency for the ZnO nanorod arrays on activated carbon fibers (0.00312 molmethylene blue molZnOāˆ’1 hāˆ’1) was twice higher than that for the corresponding bare ZnO nanorod arrays, and 3 times higher than that for a commercial ZnO powder. In addition, ZnO nanorod arrays on activated carbon fibers show high degradation (77.5%) and mineralization (55.0%) levels for methylene blue, and also good reusability (or stability) as demonstrated by a sequential 5-time recycle routine. These outstanding features indicate that activated carbon fibers supported ZnO nanorod arrays have significant potential to be used as catalysts for photodegradation

Background/Aims: It has been implicated that calcium supplementation is involved in reducing body weight/fat and improving glucose homeostasis. However, the underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood. Here, we investigated the effects of calcium supplementation on adipogenesis and glucose homeostasis in porcine bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (pBMSCs) and high fat diet (HFD)-fed mice and explored the involved signaling pathways. Methods: In vitro, pBMSCs were treated with 4 mM extracellular calcium ([Ca2+]o) and/or 1 Ī¼M nifedipine, 0.1 Ī¼M BAPTA-AM, 1 Ī¼M KN-93, 50 nM wortmannin for 10 days. The intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) levels were measured using Fluo 3-AM by flow cytometry. The adipogenic differentiation of pBMSCs was determined by Oil Red-O staining and triglyceride assay. The expression of marker genes involved in adipogenesis (peroxisome proliferator activated receptor Ī³ (PPARĪ³) and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein Ī± (C/EBPĪ±)) and glucose uptake (glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4)), as well as the activation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) and PI3K/Akt-FoxO1/AS160 signaling pathways were determined by Western blotting. Glucose uptake and utilization were examined using 2-NBDG assay and glucose content assay, respectively. In vivo, C57BL/6J male mice were fed a HFD (containing 1.2% calcium) without or with 0.6% (w/w) calcium chloride in drinking water for 13 weeks. The adipogenesis, glucose homeostasis and the involvement of CaMKII and PI3K/Akt signaling pathway were also assessed. Results: In vitro, [Ca2+]o stimulated pBMSCs adipogenesis by increasing [Ca2+]i level and activating CaMKII and PI3K/Akt-FoxO1 pathways. In addition, [Ca2+]o promoted glucose uptake/utilization by enhancing AS160 phosphorylation, GLUT4 expression and translocation. However, the stimulating effects of [Ca2+]o on pBMSCs adipogenesis and glucose uptake/utilization were abolished by L-VGCC blocker Nifedipine, [Ca2+]i chelator BAPTA-AM, CaMKII inhibitor KN-93, or PI3K inhibitor Wortmannin. In vivo, calcium supplementation decreased body weight and fat content, increased adipocyte number, and improved glucose homeostasis, with elevated PPARĪ³ and GLUT4 expression and PI3K/Akt activation in iWAT. Conclusion: calcium supplementation enhanced adipogenesis and glucose uptake in pBMSCs, which was coincident with the increased adipocyte number and improved glucose homeostasis in HFD-fed mice, and was associated with activation of CaMKII and PI3K/Akt-FoxO1/AS160 pathways. These data provided a broader understanding of the mechanisms underlying calcium-induced body weight/fat loss and glycemic control

Interaction of Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic Acid) with Lipid Membranes

We studied the interaction of Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) with lipid membranes using x-ray diffraction for bilayers containing up to 50 mol% of aspirin. From 2D x-ray intensity maps that cover large areas of reciprocal space we determined the position of the ASA molecules in the phospholipid bilayers and the molecular arrangement of the molecules in the plane of the membranes. We present direct experimental evidence that ASA molecules participate in saturated lipid bilayers of DMPC (1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) and preferably reside in the head group region of the membrane. Up to 50 mol% ASA molecules can be dissolved in this type of bilayer before the lateral membrane organization is disturbed and the membranes are found to form an ordered, 2D crystal-like structure. Furthermore, ASA and cholesterol were found to co-exist in saturated lipid bilayers, with the ASA molecules residing in the head group region and the cholesterol molecules participating in the hydrophobic membrane core

A review of fracture mechanic behaviors of rocks containing various defects

The existence of defects in a rock mass is a vital factor complicating the mechanical response of the rock mass under stress. The characteristics of defects control the rock massā€™s mechanical behaviors. This report reviews the experimental studies on the influence of simulating the internal defects of rock massā€™s mechanical properties. The effects of preexisting defects (shape, size, number, angle, and other factors) on the mechanical properties and failure modes of the rock are investigated from the perspectives of rock failure and fracture mechanics. The fracture propagation mechanisms of different defective rock masses are analyzed by studying the stress state of different defective rock masses under uniaxial compression. After the defective rock samples with varying inclination angles are destroyed, the relationship among the compressive strength, the fracture propagation, and the failure characteristics is explored. The primary findings are as follows. The increase in the size and number of defects rapidly damages the mechanical properties of the rock and intensifies defect penetration and expansion. The rock mechanics characteristics of fissured rocks with different inclination angles show two primary variations: one is a continuous increase, and the other is a decrease followed by an increase. This result is strongly related to the failure pattern of rocks with preexisting fissures. This investigation is crucial for further studying the failure modes of complex defective rock masses and the geotechnical engineering related to defective rocks

Cross-language opinion lexicon extraction using mutual-reinforcement label propagation.

There is a growing interest in automatically building opinion lexicon from sources such as product reviews. Most of these methods depend on abundant external resources such as WordNet, which limits the applicability of these methods. Unsupervised or semi-supervised learning provides an optional solution to multilingual opinion lexicon extraction. However, the datasets are imbalanced in different languages. For some languages, the high-quality corpora are scarce or hard to obtain, which limits the research progress. To solve the above problems, we explore a mutual-reinforcement label propagation framework. First, for each language, a label propagation algorithm is applied to a word relation graph, and then a bilingual dictionary is used as a bridge to transfer information between two languages. A key advantage of this model is its ability to make two languages learn from each other and boost each other. The experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms baseline significantly

Objective: To estimate and compare the dementia-free life expectancy (DemFLE) and age trends of the population over 60 in 2018 in Jiangxi Province, China, by sex and urban–rural areas. Methods: Based on the Summary of Health Statistics of Jiangxi Province in 2018 and the Sixth National Health Service survey of Jiangxi Province, the model life table is used to estimate the age-specific mortality rate by sex and urban–rural areas. DemFLE and its ratio to life expectancy (LE) were calculated using the Sullivan method. Results: In 2018, the DemFLE at age 60 was 18.48 years for men and 21.31 years for women, accounting for 96.62% and 96.67% of their LE. LE and DemFLE were higher for those in urban areas than in rural areas, except for men aged 90 and above; higher in women than in men, except for people in rural areas aged 90 and above. In urban areas, DemFLE/LE was higher for women than for men; the opposite was observed in rural areas. Urban women had a higher DemFLE/LE than rural women did, urban men had a lower DemFLE/LE than rural men did. Conclusions: With increased LE, DemFLE also increases, but with older age and over time, DemFLE/LE gradually decreases. The effect of dementia on elderly adults becomes more serious. It is necessary for the government to implement a series of prevention strategies to improve the quality of life and health awareness of the elderly. Elderly urban men and elderly rural women need more attention and health care

Chironomid communities from subalpine peatlands in subtropical China as indicators of environmental change

    No full text
The composition of Chironomidae communities and the ecological significance of such assemblages in peatlands have received little attention, especially in subtropical alpine regions. We report on the spatial distribution of subfossil chironomids and environmental controls on the insects in three subalpine peatlands from subtropical, central China. We found 44 genera and 62 morphotypes in 41 surficial peat samples from three peatlands in subtropical China. The taxa are different from those found in shallow freshwater lakes in the same region, as terrestrial/semi-terrestrial taxa are common in the peatland chironomid communities. Dissimilarities were observed among the three investigated peatlands, and spatially heterogeneous microhabitats also showed notable differences in particular species abundances, even within the same peatland. Important taxa that are associated with specific peatlands, and/or illustrate within-peatland community differences, include Tanytarsus pallidicornis-type2, which is related to lower conductivity, and Neozavrelia, which is associated with greater redox potential and pH. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed significant relationships between chironomid community composition and three environmental factors (conductivity, redox potential and pH). Anthropogenic influences and autogenic processes in peatlands likely modify the biotic communities, either through direct or indirect changes in peatland hydrology and chemistry. Low chironomid concentrations and diversity in Erxianyan Peatland may reflect ecological degradation caused by intense human activities, including the harvest of Sphagnum. This study provides information about subtropical peatland biodiversity and illustrates the utility of subfossil chironomids as proxies for past hydro-chemical changes in peatlands
