On A Simpler and Faster Derivation of Single Use Reliability Mean and Variance for Model-Based Statistical Testing

Markov chain usage-based statistical testing has proved sound and effective in providing audit trails of evidence in certifying software-intensive systems. The system end-toend reliability is derived analytically in closed form, following an arc-based Bayesian model. System reliability is represented by an important statistic called single use reliability, and defined as the probability of a randomly selected use being successful. This paper continues our earlier work on a simpler and faster derivation of the single use reliability mean, and proposes a new derivation of the single use reliability variance by applying a well-known theorem and eliminating the need to compute the second moments of arc failure probabilities. Our new results complete a new analysis that could be shown to be simpler, faster, and more direct while also rendering a more intuitive explanation. Our new theory is illustrated with three simple Markov chain usage models with manual derivations and experimental results

New feature of low pTp_{T} charm quark hadronization in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV

Treating the light-flavor constituent quarks and antiquarks that can well describe the data of light-flavor hadrons in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV as the underlying source of chromatically neutralizing the charm quarks of low transverse momenta (pTp_{T}), we show that the experimental data of pTp_{T} spectra of single-charm hadrons D0,+D^{0,+}, D∗+D^{*+} Ds+D_{s}^{+}, Λc+\Lambda_{c}^{+} and Ξc0\Xi_{c}^{0} at mid-rapidity in the low pTp_{T} range (2≲pT≲72\lesssim p_{T}\lesssim7 GeV/cc) in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV can be well understood by the equal-velocity combination of perturbatively-created charm quarks and those light-flavor constituent quarks and antiquarks. This suggests a possible new scenario of low pTp_{T} charm quark hadronization, in contrast to the traditional fragmentation mechanism, in pppp collisions at LHC energies. This is also another support for the exhibition of the effective constituent quark degrees of freedom for the small parton system created in pppp collisions at LHC energies.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Legitimization of Affective Domain Learning: A Transformative Mixed-Methods Analysis of Learning Outcomes Assessment Practice

Ever since the development of Bloom’s Taxonomy, educational institutions have primarily focused on the cognitive learning domain, concerned with the transmission and acquisition of knowledge and skills. Recently, educators and researchers have become more interested in the affective domain—concerned with attitudes, emotions, and values—and how it affects student learning outcomes. While it is important to address affective-domain learning in any educational setting, one discipline giving it particular attention is nursing; their accrediting bodies are increasingly incorporating affective learning outcomes (ALOs) in their criteria. Thus, examining how nursing programs assess for ALOs may give insight in how to successfully integrate affective-domain learning into curricula. This transformative mixed-methods study examined current assessment practices to determine how effectively and extensively they are actually employed. Learning-outcome statements issued by 227 undergraduate nursing programs accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education were evaluated for references to ALOs, in order to determine how widespread affective assessment actually is, and at what level it is implemented. A novel taxonomy was employed to categorize each school, in hopes of finding which factors can predict which institutions are most likely to implement affective learning outcomes at an exemplary level. Analyses did not reveal any significant relationships for programmatic implementation efforts with most NCES institutional characteristics nor Carnegie classifications. There was, however, a statistically significant F (3, 202) = 3.28, p = 0.02, η² =0.05 relationship between retention rate and exemplary ALO assessment practices, marking the first empirical evidence linking affective-domain learning and student retention. Coherent output of photons from coupled superconducting transmission line resonators controlled by charge qubits

We study the coherent control of microwave photons propagating in a superconducting waveguide consisting of coupled transmission line resonators, each of which is connected to a tunable charge qubit. While these coupled line resonators form an artificial photonic crystal with an engineered photonic band structure, the charge qubits collectively behave as spin waves in the low excitation limit, which modify the band-gap structure to slow and stop the microwave propagation. The conceptual exploration here suggests an electromagnetically controlled quantum device based on the on-chip circuit QED for the coherent manipulation of photons, such as the dynamic creation of laser-like output from the waveguide by pumping the artificial atoms for population inversion.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
