    The Status and Prospects of Community Education Workers in China

    Professionalization, career development prospects, and social value are the three basic components of the status and prospects of community education workers, which influence their choice to continue their careers or not. In China, these problems are complex and lacking in systematic research, and the current situation does not meet the needs of community education. This study interviewed 24 community workers regarding their salaries, working conditions, and training and career advancement opportunities to evaluate this situation in Ningbo City. The findings highlight challenges in the evaluation processes and work motivations of community education workers, including teams without professional knowledge, lack of training opportunities, unsupportive policies, and low salaries. These findings can be used by governments and community workers to find collaborative ways to facilitate community education processes, including the provision of adult education for community educators. New legal policies to raise the status of community educators are also suggested

    Wall Street’s Attitude to CEO-to-Employee Pay-Ratio: Evidence from M&As

    Using merger and acquisition (M&A) announcements from 2018 to 2021 by S&P 1500 firms in the United States as a corporate event, we aim to further understand the debate surrounding within firm income inequality in executive compensation in U.S companies. We found that the M&A announcement period abnormal returns positively related to acquirer’s CEO-to-Employee Pay Ratio. However, we note that such an effect is more pronounced when the target is not a publicly traded firm. Our core findings are consistent with Optimal Contracting Theory, Shareholder Value view and Talent Assignment Hypotheses. Market perceives firms likely pay higher compensation to attract more talented CEOs, which contributes to within firm pay disparity. In other words, these findings also imply that market perceives more talented CEOs likely have stronger bargaining power to extract larger share of company’s rents, as such CEOs would likely be able to make firm value maximizing acquisitions

    The spin alignment of vector mesons with light front quarks

    The global spin alignment of the vector meson has been observed in relativistic heavy ion collisions, but is still on hot debates in the theoretical community. Here we propose to apply the light front framework to explain this phenomenon since the light front form explicitly describes the hadron spin including both the quark spin and the orbital angular momentum. After applying the light front spinor, we find that the spin alignment in the polarization of vector mesons with ρ00>1/3\rho_{00}>1/3 can be naturally manifested and in particular, the obtained spin alignment for ϕ\phi meson is in good agreement with the experimental data. This implies that to explain the spin alignment it is important to properly include the contribution from the gluon interactions that are presented in terms of the orbital angular momentum of the hadron bound state.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

    Optimizing Photonic Nanostructures via Multi-fidelity Gaussian Processes

    We apply numerical methods in combination with finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulations to optimize transmission properties of plasmonic mirror color filters using a multi-objective figure of merit over a five-dimensional parameter space by utilizing novel multi-fidelity Gaussian processes approach. We compare these results with conventional derivative-free global search algorithms, such as (single-fidelity) Gaussian Processes optimization scheme, and Particle Swarm Optimization---a commonly used method in nanophotonics community, which is implemented in Lumerical commercial photonics software. We demonstrate the performance of various numerical optimization approaches on several pre-collected real-world datasets and show that by properly trading off expensive information sources with cheap simulations, one can more effectively optimize the transmission properties with a fixed budget.Comment: NIPS 2018 Workshop on Machine Learning for Molecules and Materials. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1811.0075

    Measuring the contribution of the ocean: A comparison of the statistical classification of the marine economy used by China and Canada

    Most of the major marine countries share an identical knowledge about marine economy. Ocean-related principle is the primary principles which distinguish the ocean economy from national economy and other economies. The understandings of marine economy from various countries all take into consideration the ocean-relativeness character geographically or industrially. However, there are certain differences in statistical frameworks and specific industrial classifications. In this paper, the statistical classification of marine economy between China and Canada is comparatively studied from the perspectives of the connotation of marine economy, the classification of regional statistics, and the classification of industrial statistics. Moreover, the identification of the statistical calibers of the two countries’ marine economy is further analyzed. This allows for a comparison of the statistical data between the two countries’ marine economy. Several suggestions on enforcing the statistical work for the marine economy are proposed in the end

    What Can Simple Arithmetic Operations Do for Temporal Modeling?

    Temporal modeling plays a crucial role in understanding video content. To tackle this problem, previous studies built complicated temporal relations through time sequence thanks to the development of computationally powerful devices. In this work, we explore the potential of four simple arithmetic operations for temporal modeling. Specifically, we first capture auxiliary temporal cues by computing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division between pairs of extracted frame features. Then, we extract corresponding features from these cues to benefit the original temporal-irrespective domain. We term such a simple pipeline as an Arithmetic Temporal Module (ATM), which operates on the stem of a visual backbone with a plug-andplay style. We conduct comprehensive ablation studies on the instantiation of ATMs and demonstrate that this module provides powerful temporal modeling capability at a low computational cost. Moreover, the ATM is compatible with both CNNs- and ViTs-based architectures. Our results show that ATM achieves superior performance over several popular video benchmarks. Specifically, on Something-Something V1, V2 and Kinetics-400, we reach top-1 accuracy of 65.6%, 74.6%, and 89.4% respectively.
