Modeling the early stages of a user-centered process in architectural design through adaptation of the methodologies of New Product Design

In order to reach a degree of quality in architectural buildings that is likely to lead to user satisfaction, architectural design relies on integrating user-related information even before generation of building concepts. However, integrating such information may be seen as a hindrance to architectural creation. It therefore seems necessary to propose a methodological approach that allows integration of a user-centred point of view as well as generation of creative architectural concepts. Our research proposes to apply a collaborative process of New Product Design (NPD) in order to further enrich the traditional process of architectural design. We will present some experimental work carried out as part of an architectural project for the design of emergency shelters, as an alternative to more usual habitats. We will then discuss the possibility of adapting NPD methodology to architectural design, and what potential this offers to improve the integration of user-related information within architectural creativity

Low Transmission to Elimination: Rural Development as a Key Determinant of the End-Game Dynamics of Schistosoma japonicum in China.

Rural development has been a critical component of China's economic miracle since the start of economic reform in the early 1980s, both benefiting from and contributing to the nation's rapid economic growth. This development has yielded substantial improvements of public health relevance, including contributing to major reductions in schistosomiasis prevalence. The history of schistosomiasis elimination in Japan suggests that development played a dominant causal role in that nation. We argue that it is highly probable that a similar story is playing out in at least some large regions of China. In particular, we summarize evidence from Sichuan Province which supports the case that economic development has led to improvements in rural irrigation and water supply which, together with changes in crop selection and agricultural mechanization, have all contributed to sustainable reductions in the prevalence of Schistosoma japonicum. The two major factors that have experienced major reductions are the area of snail habitat and the degree of human exposure, both through a variety of mechanisms which differ by region and economic circumstance. However, hotspots of transmission remain. Overall, however, economic development in traditionally endemic areas has provided the resources to carry out projects that have had major beneficial impacts on disease transmission that are likely to be sustainable

On recursions for coefficients of mock theta functions

    Get PDF
We use a generalized Lambert series identity due to the first author to present q-series proofs of recent results of Imamoglu, Raum and Richter concerning recursive formulas for the coefficients of two 3rd order mock theta functions. Additionally, we discuss an application of this identity to other mock theta functions.Comment: 21 pages, to appear in Research in Number Theor

    Variations of Andrews-Beck type congruences

We prove three variations of recent results due to Andrews on congruences for NT(m,k,n)NT(m,k,n), the total number of parts in the partitions of nn with rank congruent to mm modulo kk. We also conjecture new congruences and relations for NT(m,k,n)NT(m,k,n) and for a related crank-type function.Comment: 15 pages, typos corrected, to appear in the Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Application

Body Integrity Identity Disorder and the Ethics of Mutilation

    Get PDF
The rare phenomenon in which a person desires amputation of a healthy limb, now often termed body integrity identity disorder, raises central questions for biomedical ethics. Standard bioethical discussions of surgical intervention in such cases fail to address the meaning of bodily integrity, which is intrinsic to a theological understanding of the goodness of the body. However, moral theological responses are liable to assume that such interventions necessarily represent an implicitly docetic manipulation of the body. Through detailed attention to the ethics of mutilation and of surgery for psychiatric disorders, this article explores the theological and ethical significance of the body for human identity
