Habitat differentiation and conservation gap of Magnolia biondii, M. denudata, and M. sprengeri in China
The flower buds of Magnolia biondii, M. denudata, and M. sprengeri are the materials of Xinyi, a traditional Chinese medicine. The harvest of flower buds and habitat fragmentation caused by human disturbance heavily threatens the natural regeneration and survival of these three Magnolia species. With the aim to support the conservation and improve the effectiveness of conservation, we performed an assessment on habitat suitability, influences of environmental variables on habitat suitability, and the conservation gap of these three Magnolia species, based on the Maxent modeling method. The results indicated that: (1) altitude, annual mean temperature, extreme temperature, temperature fluctuation, annual precipitation, and extreme precipitation are the most influential environmental variables for the distribution of M. sprengeri, M. biondii, and M. denudata; (2) obvious habitat differentiations were observed among M. biondii, M. denudata, and M. sprengeri. M. sprengeri tends to be located in further northern areas with higher altitudes, lower temperatures, and lower precipitation compared to M. biondii and M. denudata; and (3) a large proportion of suitable habitats have been left without protection. Woodland and forest shared the largest area out of the suitable habitats. However, grassland, agricultural land, residential land, and mining and industry areas also occupied large areas of suitable habitats
Tree-ring stable carbon isotope-based June-September maximum temperature reconstruction since AD 1788, north-west Thailand
The first study of tree-ring stable carbon isotopes in Thailand has demonstrated that stable carbon isotope in northwestern Thailand represents a promising proxy for the temperature reconstruction of core-monsoon periods. A tree-ring delta C-13 chronology was constructed based on four cores covering the period of 1788-2013. After removing the long-term decreasing trend reflecting atmospheric CO2 concentrations, the Delta C-13 chronology was able to capture both temperature and hydro-climate signals Delta C-13 chronology showed particularly strong and significant negative correlation (r = -0.62, p < 0.0001) with June-September maximum temperature (CRU TS 3.24). The maximum temperature was reconstructed, which explained 37.8% of the variance in the instrumental maximum temperatures over the period of 1901-2013. The maximum temperature reconstruction revealed that four cooler and three warmer periods, as well as a slightly increasing temperature trend, occurred during the late seventeenth to mid-eighteenth centuries, which were followed by severe temperature fluctuations during the twentieth century century. While the sea surface temperature anomaly in the Indian Ocean might not affect the maximum temperature, its unstable relationship with the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) was detected. In addition, a close relationship was observed between the maximum temperature and ENSO during the negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), but this relationship was lost during the positive phase of the PDO
Global attractivity and permanence of a SVEIR epidemic model with pulse vaccination and time delay
AbstractIn this study, we propose a new SVEIR epidemic disease model with time delay, and analyze the dynamic behavior of the model under pulse vaccination. Pulse vaccination is an effective strategy for the elimination of infectious disease. Using the discrete dynamical system determined by the stroboscopic map, we obtain an ‘infection-free’ periodic solution. We also show that the ‘infection-free’ periodic solution is globally attractive when some parameters of the model under appropriate conditions. The permanence of the model is investigated analytically. Our results indicate that a large vaccination rate or a short pulse of vaccination or a long latent period is a sufficient condition for the extinction of the disease
The 225-year precipitation variability inferred from tree-ring records in Shanxi Province, the North China, and its teleconnection with Indian summer monsoon
Understanding the interactions between the East Asian summer monsoon and Indian summer monsoon is a challenging task because of the insufficient proxy records. In this study, we reconstructed a 225-year precipitation record by combining ring widths of Pinus tabulaeformis and stable oxygen isotope ratios of Larix principis-rupprechtii using a multi-proxy dendroclimatology approach in the North China. The reconstructed record explained 51.9% of the variance in the observed precipitation during 1955–2003. The precipitation series could indicate the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon. A spatial field analysis indicated that the series was strongly correlated with the reconstructed records of the surrounding area and a large part of the Indian subcontinent. The reconstructed records were significantly and positively correlated with All Indian Precipitation records (r = 0.32, n = 132, p < 0.001) and with a proxy of the Indian summer monsoon. These findings suggest that a persistent teleconnection exists between the reconstructed record and the Indian summer monsoon records from the past 225 years. The observed interannual synchronisation potentially resulted from the transport of partial water vapour from the Indian summer monsoon area to NC; however, this synchronisation could not be attributed to the El Nino-South Oscillation (ENSO). When considering an interdecadal time scale, the synchronisation with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has varied since 1779, implying that the NAO may serve as an additional atmospheric pattern that affects this teleconnectio
Influence of Coalescence on the Anisotropic Mechanical and Electrical Properties of Nickel Powder/Polydimethylsiloxane Composites.
Multifunctional polymer-based composites have been widely used in various research and industrial applications, such as flexible and stretchable electronics and sensors and sensor-integrated smart structures. This study investigates the influence of particle coalescence on the mechanical and electrical properties of spherical nickel powder (SNP)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composites in which SNP was aligned using an external magnetic field. With the increase of the volume fraction of the SNP, the aligned SNP/PDMS composites exhibited a higher tensile strength and a lower ultimate strain. In addition, the composites with aligned SNP showed a lower percolation threshold and a higher electrical conductivity compared with those with randomly dispersed SNP. However, when the concentration of the SNP reached a certain level (40 vol. %), the anisotropy of the effective material property became less noticeable than that of the lower concentration (20 vol. %) composites due to the change of the microstructure of the particles caused by the coalescence of the particles at a high concentration. This work may provide rational methods for the fabrication of aligned composites
Tree-ring-based precipitation reconstruction in the source region of Weihe River, northwest China since AD 1810
A tree-ring width chronology of Picea purpurea Mast from Mt. Shouyang in the source region of Weihe River (SWR), northwest China, was developed in this study. Correlation analysis showed that the precipitation from previous August to current July was the limiting climate factor of tree growth. Using a reliable and stable linear regression model, which explained 42.6% of the variance of the actual precipitation during the calibration period from 1958 to 2014, a 205-year long precipitation series was reconstructed for the SWR. The dry years in the reconstruction were well supported by historical documents, and famous historical droughts were also recorded in the dry periods of a low-frequency scale of the reconstructed precipitation. As demonstrated by the spatial correlation patterns, the reconstructed series compared well with other hydroclimate records for northwest China, indicating that it could represent large-scale hydroclimate changes. The 2-8-year interannual cycles and the interdecadal quasiperiods of 15.9 years and 18.6 years revealed that the precipitation in this region was probably affected by the El Nino-Southern Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation. The dry/wet years corresponded well with the El Nino/La Nina events and the SWR commonly experienced droughts during the low periods of North Atlantic Oscillation
Sunshine duration reconstruction in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau based on tree-ring width and its relationship to volcanic eruptions
Sunshine is as essential as temperature and precipitation for tree growth, but sunshine duration reconstructions based on tree rings have not yet been conducted in China. In this study, we presented a 497-year sunshine duration reconstruction for the southeastern Tibetan Plateau using a width chronology of Abies forrestii from the central Hengduan Mountains. The reconstruction accounted for 53.5% of the variance in the observed sunshine during the period of 1961-2013 based on a stable and reliable linear regression. This reconstructed sunshine duration contained six sunny periods (1630-1656, 1665-1697, 1731-1781, 1793-1836, 1862-1895 and 1910-1992) and seven cloudy periods (1522-1629, 1657-1664, 1698-1730, 1782-1792, 1837-1861, 1896-1909 and 1993-2008) at a low-frequency scale. There was an increasing trend from the 16th century to the late 18th and early 19th centuries and a decreasing trend from the mid-19th to the early 21st centuries. Sunshine displayed inverse patterns to the local Palmer drought severity index on a multidecadal scale, indicating that this region likely experienced droughts under more sunshine conditions. The decrease in sunshine particularly in recent decades was mainly due to increasing atmospheric anthropogenic aerosols. In terms of the interannual variations in sunshine, weak sunshine years matched well with years of major volcanic eruptions. The significant cycles of the 2- to 7-year, 20.0-year and 35.2-year durations as well as the 60.2-year and 78.7-year durations related to the El-Nino Southern Oscillation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation suggested that the variation in sunshine duration in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau was possibly affected by large-scale ocean-atmosphere circulations.
