This brochure on individuals with spinal cord injuries and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is one of a series on human resources practices and workplace accommodations for persons with disabilities edited by Susanne M. Bruyère, Ph.D., CRC, SPHR, Director, Program on Employment and Disability, School of Industrial and Labor Relations – Extension Division, Cornell University. Cornell University was funded in the early 1990’s by the U.S. Department of Education National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research as a National Materials Development Project on the employment provisions (Title I) of the ADA (Grant #H133D10155). These updates, and the development of new brochures, have been funded by Cornell’s Program on Employment and Disability and the Pacific Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center

Intra-accumbens baclofen, but not muscimol, increases second order instrumental responding for food reward in rats

Stimulation of either GABA(A) or GABA(B) receptors within the nucleus accumbens shell strongly enhances food intake in rats. However the effects of subtype-selective stimulation of GABA receptors on instrumental responses for food reward are less well characterized. Here we contrast the effects of the GABA(A) receptor agonist muscimol and GABA(B) receptor agonist baclofen on instrumental responding for food using a second order reinforcement schedule. Bilateral intra-accumbens administration of baclofen (220-440 pmol) stimulated responding but a higher dose (660 pmol) induced stereotyped oral behaviour that interfered with responding. Baclofen (220-660 pmol) also stimulated intake of freely available chow. Muscimol (220-660 pmol) was without effect on responding for food on this schedule but did stimulate intake of freely available chow. Unilateral administration of either baclofen or muscimol (220 pmol) induced similar patterns of c-fos immunoreactivity in several hypothalamic sites but differed in its induction in the central nucleus of the amygdala. We conclude that stimulation of GABA(A) or GABA(B) receptors in the nucleus accumbens shell of rats produces clearly distinguishable effects on operant responding for food

Human-centered design approaches for participatory organizations and enabling systems

    Get PDF
Informed Systems honors stakeholder perspective and values information experience through inclusive construction of workplace systems and participatory processes. Enabling design tools and inclusive information processes support planning and building organizational communication systems for evidence based inquiry and continuous team learning. In this North American example, international researchers’ contributions illustrate the efficacy of introducing theory from Australia and methods from Sweden to re-invent an academic library. To initiate transformative change at the University of Colorado Denver, Scandinavian participation design practices guided co-creation of shared vision and systems purpose.. Building upon these catalytic collective experiences, an organizational learning culture was advanced through introduction of Australian informed learning principles. This maturation model guided enactment of evidence-based decisionmaking and decision taking practices for information sharing and knowledge exchange activities. Longitudinal results suggest that such conversation-rich dialogic organization development benefits from introduction and guidance by international researchers with deep knowledge and nuanced experience

SAGE White Paper on Discoverability in the Twenty-First Century

    Get PDF
Discoverability enables scholars to locate the content needed to advance their research and other creative activities. Improved discovery experiences require heightened collaboration among: (1) scholarly publishers and their published authors; (2) search engine developers, database providers, abstracting and indexing services, and academic publishers; (3) electronic resource management and integrated library system vendors, and ; (4) librarians who advance institutional discoverability. To further exploratory cross-sector conversations, SAGE commissioned a White Paper, "Improving Discoverability of Scholarly Content in the Twentieth Century: Collaboration Opportunities for Librarians, Publishers, and Vendors," released in January 2012. The research report presents highlights of interviews conducted from July to October 2011 with fourteen value chain experts. The White Paper also summarizes results of peer-reviewed publications and proprietary research studies to further characterize the currently fragmented discovery environment. In conclusions, the authors propose cross-sector conversations among publishers, vendors, and librarians to further visibility and, ultimately, usage of the scholarly corpus on the open Web and within library services

Youth stress, support, coping skills and depression: Developing a model for primary prevention in the high schools

    Get PDF
This study examined the needs and resources of Galt Collegiate Institute and the City of Cambridge in order to develop a primary prevention program for adolescent stress, support, and coping skills. Two hundred and ten high school students (grade 9 to OAC) completed an adolescent experiences questionnaire including measures on daily hassles, social support, coping skills, depression, and affect. As well, ten individuals from the community completed an interview focusing on program ideas and available resources. Multiple regression analyses of the student data revealed that hassles were directly related to negative affect and depression, and coping skills were directly related to the positive affect and inversely related to depression. Social support was directly related to positive affect and inversely related to depression while positive affect was inversely related to depression. There were also significant gender and age differences in stress, support, coping, affect and depression which are discussed. Overall, the results indicate that there is a need for adolescent prevention programs in the Cambridge area. A model for a primary prevention program for high school students is discussed in relation to the results of the present study

A Study of Pneumonia in Infancy and Childhood with Special Reference to the Pathology

    1. An analysis was made from the records of 2,475 clinical cases and 520 post-mortem cases of pneumonia in children below twelve years of age, and 65 of these were examined by histological methods (see previous paper). 2. Broncho-pneumonia was the lesion most often found in the first three years of life, hut its incidence diminished from year to year; after three years it became infrequent as a primary disease and was then usually atypical in symptoms and morbid appearances. 3. Lobar pneumonia very rarely occurred till after the third year, though two doubtful cases in the post-mortem series we re recorded. After three years it became the most frequent type, though often combined with lobular lesions. 4. Lobar pneumonia in it self was seldom fatal, but death occurred as a result of complications such as empyema and meningitis. The mortality from broncho-pneumonia, on the other hand, was high, especially so in infants; influenzal and secondary forms were the most fatal. 5. Broncho-pneumonia involved both lungs in the majority/ majority of cases, but was usually most advanced in the lower lobes posteriorly. In lobar pneumonia the right lung and upper lobe were the commonest sites, the minority showing bilateral lesions. 6. Pleurisy in the form of a fibrinous exudate was extremely common over surface areas of consolidation; a serous effusion, however, was very rare. 7. Of associated lesions, empyema, otitis media, pericarditis and meningitis were the most frequent. Nephritis, pyelitis, cerebral sinus thrombosis, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, peritonitis, jaundice, encephalitis, ulcerative endocarditis, fibrosis of lungs occurred in a few cases
