    Concrete sewer pipe corrosion induced by sulphuric acid environment

    Corrosion of concrete sewer pipes induced by sulphuric acid attack is a recognised problem worldwide, which is not only an attribute of countries with hot climate conditions as thought before. The significance of this problem is by far only realised when the pipe collapses causing surface flooding and other severe consequences. To change the existing post-reactive attitude of managing companies, easy to use and robust models are required to be developed which currently lack reliable data to be correctly calibrated. This paper focuses on laboratory experiments of establishing concrete pipe corrosion rate by submerging samples in to 0.5 pH sulphuric acid solution for 56 days under 10ºC, 20ºC and 30ºC temperature regimes. The result showed that at very early stage of the corrosion process the samples gained overall mass, at 30ºC the corrosion progressed quicker than for other temperature regimes, however with time the corrosion level for 10ºC and 20ºC regimes tended towards those at 30ºC. Overall, at these conditions the corrosion rates of 10 mm/year, 13,5 mm/year and 17 mm/year were observed

    Long-term exposure to outdoor and household air pollution and blood pressure in the prospective urban and rural epidemiological (pure) study

    Exposure to air pollution has been linked to elevated blood pressure (BP) and hypertension, but most research has focused on short-term (hours, days, or months) exposures at relatively low concentrations. We examined the associations between long-term (3-year average) concentrations of outdoor PM2.5 and household air pollution (HAP) from cooking with solid fuels with BP and hypertension in the Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study. Outdoor PM2.5 exposures were estimated at year of enrollment for 137,809 adults aged 35–70 years from 640 urban and rural communities in 21 countries using satellite and ground-based methods. Primary use of solid fuel for cooking was used as an indicator of HAP exposure, with analyses restricted to rural participants (n = 43,313) in 27 study centers in 10 countries. BP was measured following a standardized procedure and associations with air pollution examined with mixed-effect regression models, after adjustment for a comprehensive set of potential confounding factors. Baseline outdoor PM2.5 exposure ranged from 3 to 97 μg/m3 across study communities and was associated with an increased odds ratio (OR) of 1.04 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.07) for hypertension, per 10 μg/m3 increase in concentration

    Computation of Optimal Break Point Set of Relays -- An Integer Linear Programming Approach

    We propose an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation for the minimum relay break point set (BPS) computation. Subsequently, in the ILP framework, we propose an alternate maximum-independent relay BPS formulation with the intention of minimizing dependency within the BPS. We show that 1) in practice, the relaxed version of the ILP suffices to obtain an integral vertex and 2) the relaxed version of the ILP can be efficiently solved by the dual-simplex method. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared and contrasted with existing algorithms. Case studies on various test systems show the efficacy of the proposed approach

    Successful treatment of C. auris shunt infection with intraventricular caspofungin

    C. auris is an emerging fungal pathogen with high prevalence of resistance to current antifungal agents. Central nervous system infection with C. auris has been infrequently described. We describe here an adult with nosocomial CSF shunt infection due to multi drug resistant C. auris. Systemic therapy with echinocandin and flucytosine failed. Fortunately, administration of daily intraventricular caspofungin 10 mg for 10 days in conjunction with systemic voriconazole resulted in both clinical and microbiological cure.     Both akinetic and hyperkinetic movement disorders may rarely be the presenting feature of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The possible pathogenic basis is the involvement of subcortical structures by the HIV infection-related pathology. Opportunistic infections, or mass lesions complicating HIV infection. In addition dopaminergic dysfunction and medications may also play a role. We report a HIV infected male who presented with progressive choreoathetoid movements and dystonia. He had remarkable improvement of the movement disorder with tetrabenazine and anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) treatment

    Necrotizing enterocolitis in adults: a study of four cases

    Necrotizing enterocolitis is an acute disease that primarily affects premature neonates of low birth weight, and has a very high morbidity and mortality. The incidence in adults is significantly less, with lower mortality rates. Of those who survive, many are left with complications related to short gut syndrome. We report 4 cases of necrotizing enterocolitis all of whom underwent early surgical intervention and had good recovery, followed by a review of the literature on the subject
