    Toward a Unified Magnetic Phase Diagram of the Cuprate Superconductors

    We propose a unified magnetic phase diagram of cuprate superconductors. A new feature of this phase diagram is a broad intermediate doping region of quantum-critical, z=1z=1, behavior, characterized by temperature independent T1T/T2GT_1T/T_{\rm 2G} and linear T1TT_1T, where the spin waves are not completely absorbed by the electron-hole continuum. The spin gap in the moderately doped materials is related to the suppression of the low-energy spectral weight in the quantum disordered, z=1z=1, regime. The crossover to the z=2z=2 regime, where T_1T/T_{\rm 2G}^2 \simeq \mbox{const}, occurs only in the fully doped materials.Comment: 14 pages, REVTeX v2.1, PostScript file for 3 figures attached, UIUC-P-93-06-04

    Quantum Disordered Regime and Spin Gap in the Cuprate Superconductors

    We discuss the crossover from the quantum critical, z ⁣= ⁣1z\!=\!1, to the quantum disordered regime in high-Tc_c materials in relation to the experimental data on the nuclear relaxation, bulk susceptibility, and inelastic neutron scattering. In our scenario, the spin excitations develop a gap Δ ⁣ ⁣1/ξ\Delta\!\sim\!1/\xi well above Tc_c, which is supplemented by the quasiparticle gap below Tc_c.     Charge Dynamics in the Planar t-J Model

    The finite-temperature optical conductivity σ(ω)\sigma(\omega) in the planar tJt-J model is analysed using recently introduced numerical method based on the Lanczos diagonalization of small systems (up to 20 sites), as well as by analytical approaches, including the method of frequency moments and the retraceable-path approximation. Results for a dynamical mobility of a single hole at elevated temperatures T>tT>t reveal a Gaussian-like μ(ω)\mu(\omega) spectra, however with a nonanalytical behavior at low ω\omega. In the single hole response a difference between the ferromagnetic (J=0) and the antiferromagnetic (J>0J>0) polaron shows up at T<JT<J. At larger dopings numerical results in studied systems are consistent with the thermodynamical behavior for T>T0.1 tT>T^*\ge 0.1~t. σ(ω)\sigma(\omega) spectra show a non-Drude falloff at large frequencies. In particular for `optimum' doping nh0.2n_h \sim 0.2 we obtain in the low-ω,T\omega,T regime the relaxation rate τ10.6(ω+ξT)\tau^{-1} \sim 0.6 (\omega+\xi T) with ξ3\xi \sim 3, being consistent with the marginal Fermi liquid concept and experiments. Within the same regime we reproduce the nearly linear variation of dc resistivity ρ\rho with TT.     Spin correlations in the algebraic spin liquid - implications for high Tc superconductors

    We propose that underdoped high TcT_c superconductors are described by an algebraic spin liquid (ASL) at high energies, which undergoes a spin-charge recombination transition at low energies. The spin correlation in the ASL is calculated via its effective theory - a system of massless Dirac fermions coupled to a U(1) gauge field. We find that without fine tuning any parameters the gauge interaction strongly enhances the staggered spin correlation even in the presence of a large single particle pseudo-gap. This allows us to show that the ASL plus spin-charge recombination picture can explain many highly unusual properties of underdoped high TcT_c superconductors.Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, submitted to PR

    Spin-Charge Separation in the tJt-J Model: Magnetic and Transport Anomalies

    A real spin-charge separation scheme is found based on a saddle-point state of the tJt-J model. In the one-dimensional (1D) case, such a saddle-point reproduces the correct asymptotic correlations at the strong-coupling fixed-point of the model. In the two-dimensional (2D) case, the transverse gauge field confining spinon and holon is shown to be gapped at {\em finite doping} so that a spin-charge deconfinement is obtained for its first time in 2D. The gap in the gauge fluctuation disappears at half-filling limit, where a long-range antiferromagnetic order is recovered at zero temperature and spinons become confined. The most interesting features of spin dynamics and transport are exhibited at finite doping where exotic {\em residual} couplings between spin and charge degrees of freedom lead to systematic anomalies with regard to a Fermi-liquid system. In spin dynamics, a commensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuation with a small, doping-dependent energy scale is found, which is characterized in momentum space by a Gaussian peak at (π/a\pi/a, π/a \pi/a) with a doping-dependent width (δ\propto \sqrt{\delta}, δ\delta is the doping concentration). This commensurate magnetic fluctuation contributes a non-Korringa behavior for the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate. There also exits a characteristic temperature scale below which a pseudogap behavior appears in the spin dynamics. Furthermore, an incommensurate magnetic fluctuation is also obtained at a {\em finite} energy regime. In transport, a strong short-range phase interference leads to an effective holon Lagrangian which can give rise to a series of interesting phenomena including linear-TT resistivity and T2T^2 Hall-angle.     Shakespeare's composition of the Anne Page and Fenton subplot of The Merry Wives of Windsor may have been inspired by, or at least influenced by, his undoubted knowledge of the scandalous elopement in 1600 of Elizabeth Aston, the favourite granddaughter of Sir Thomas Lucy, with the Warwickshire man John Sambach. These topical events, their likely fame, their aftermath and their potential impact on Shakespeare are traced. Parallels and anti-parallels with the play are shown. The impact of the acceptance of the theory of influence on the dating and on the interpretation of the play is discussed. (Author abstract
