Analysis of the Influence of Internet TV Station on Wikipedia Page Views

We aim to investigate the influence of television on the web; if the influence is strong, a viral effect may be expected. In this paper, we focus on the Internet TV station and on Wikipedia use as exploratory behavior on the web. We analyzed the influence of Internet TV station on Wikipedia page views. Our aim is to clarify the characteristics of page views as related to Internet TV station in order to index outward impact and develop a prediction model. The results indicate that there is a correlation between TV viewership and page views. Moreover we find that the time lag between TV and web gradually reduce as broadcasts begin after 9:00; after 23:00, page views tend to be maximized during the broadcast itself. We also differentiate between page views on PC and on mobile and find that PC pages tend to be accessed more during the daytime. In addition, we consider the number of broadcasts per program, and observe that viewership tends to stabilize as the number of broadcasts increases but that page views tend to decrease.Comment: The 3rd International Workshop on Application of Big Data for Computational Social Science (ABCSS2018

Time-programmable drug dosing allows the manipulation, suppression and reversal of antibiotic drug resistance in vitro

Multi-drug strategies have been attempted to prolong the efficacy of existing antibiotics, but with limited success. Here we show that the evolution of multi-drug-resistant Escherichia coli can be manipulated in vitro by administering pairs of antibiotics and switching between them in ON/OFF manner. Using a multiplexed cell culture system, we find that switching between certain combinations of antibiotics completely suppresses the development of resistance to one of the antibiotics. Using this data, we develop a simple deterministic model, which allows us to predict the fate of multi-drug evolution in this system. Furthermore, we are able to reverse established drug resistance based on the model prediction by modulating antibiotic selection stresses. Our results support the idea that the development of antibiotic resistance may be potentially controlled via continuous switching of drugs

Quantum algorithm for collisionless Boltzmann simulation of self-gravitating systems

The collisionless Boltzmann equation (CBE) is a fundamental equation that governs the dynamics of a broad range of astrophysical systems from space plasma to star clusters and galaxies. It is computationally expensive to integrate the CBE directly in a phase space, and thus the applications to realistic astrophysical problems have been limited so far. Recently, Todorova \& Steijl (2020) proposed an efficient quantum algorithm for solving the CBE with a significantly reduced computational complexity. We extend the method to perform quantum simulations that follow the evolution of self-gravitating systems. We first run a 1+1 dimensional test calculation of free streaming motion on 64×\times64 grids using 13 simulated qubits and validate our method. We then perform simulations of Jeans collapse, and compare the result with analytic and linear theory calculations. We propose a direct method to generate initial conditions as well as a method to retrieve necessary information from a register of multiple qubits. Our simulation scheme achieves O(Nv3)\mathcal{O}(N_v^3) less computational complexity than the classical method, where NvN_v is the number of discrete velocity grids per dimension. It will thus allow us to perform large-scale CBE simulations on future quantum computers.Comment: 10 pages, 9figure

Surgical resection for advanced bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with fibrous dysplasia: a case report

    Get PDF
Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is an adverse drug reaction represented by destruction and/or death of bone. Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare bony disorder characterised by abnormal fibro-osseous tissue that has lowered resistance to infection. Effective treatments for BRONJ that follows FD are unclear. Here, we report that advanced BRONJ associated with FD was successfully treated by surgical resection. A 69-year-old woman, whose left maxillary bone showed a ground glass appearance on computed tomography (CT) images, was taking alendronate. At 1 year after teeth within the abnormal bone were extracted, exposed bone was observed in the extraction sites and CT images revealed separated sequestrums. Under the clinical diagnosis of Stage 2 BRONJ with FD, we performed not only sequestrectomy but also a partial resection of the FD. Thereafter, the healing was uneventful without recurrence. In conclusion, our case suggests that surgical resection is useful for advanced BRONJ associated with FD

Vitamin D during pregnancy in Japanese

We aimed to demonstrate that the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level in maternal and umbilical cord blood has a seasonal variation in Japanese women. The study cohort comprised 256 healthy Japanese women with a singleton pregnancy who delivered after 36 gestational weeks between 2012 and 2015. The season at delivery was categorized for 3 months and recorded as “spring”, “summer”, “autumn” and “winter”. Subjects were divided into four groups according to season. A sample of peripheral venous blood at 35-36 gestational weeks and blood from the umbilical vein at delivery were taken. The mean serum 25(OH)D concentration (ng/mL) in maternal blood for each season (spring, summer, autumn and winter) was 18.0 (±6.7), 17.1 (±5.1), 21.6 (±8.0) and 16.0 (±5.1), whereas that for umbilical cord blood was 8.8 (±3.6), 8.6 (±2.6), 10.7 (±3.5) and 8.6 (±2.1), respectively. The mean serum 25(OH)D concentration of maternal and umbilical cord blood in autumn was higher than that for the other three seasons. In pregnant Japanese women, the mean serum 25(OH)D concentration in maternal and umbilical cord blood was affected by the season of delivery, with both being highest in autumn. Regardless of the season, the maternal serum concentration of 25(OH)D was low in Japan

Patient's Self-monitoring of Transurethral Surgical Images Using a Head-mounted Display

AbstractWe present an application of head-mounted display (HMD) to patient's self-monitoring of transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURB). Six patients wore the HMD as an imaging monitor to view the operation in real-time during their TURB. Following the operation, the patients completed a questionnaire that evaluates understanding of the state of their disease and satisfaction with the HMD. As a result, monitoring the operation in real time through the HMD helped to increase patients' understanding of the state of their disease and satisfaction. For selected patients, the use of HMD could help to increase the patient's understanding of their disease

Expression of Neurokinin B Receptor in the Gingival Squamous Cell Carcinoma Bone Microenvironment

Gingival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) frequently invades the maxillary or mandibular bone, and bone destruction is known as a key prognostic factor in gingival SCCs. Recently, Neurokinin 3 receptor (NK-3R), the receptor ligand for NK-3, which is a member of the tachykinin family expressed in the central nervous system, was identified through pathway analysis as a molecule expressed in osteoclasts induced by the hedgehog signal. Although the expression of NK-3R has been detected in osteoclast and SCC cells at the bone invasion front, the relationship between NK-3R expression and the prognosis of gingival SCC patients remains unclear. In the present study, we retrospectively reviewed 27 patients with gingival SCC who had undergone surgery with curative intent. Significantly higher NK-3R expression in tumor cells was found in a case of jawbone invasion than in a case of exophytic poor jawbone invasion. On the other hand, no significant association was observed between NK-3R tumor-positive cases and tumor size, TNM stage, or tumor differentiation. The survival rate tended to be lower in NK-3R tumor-positive cases, but not significantly. However, the disease-specific survival rate was significantly lower in patients with a large number of NK-3R-positive osteoclasts than in those with a small number of them at the tumor bone invasion front. Our results suggest that NK-3R signaling in the gingival SCC bone microenvironment plays an important role in tumor bone destruction and should be considered a potential therapeutic target in advanced gingival SCC with bone destruction

Human cord blood-MNC transplantation improves PH

    Get PDF
Objectives : To investigate the effects of human umbilical cord blood-derived mononuclear cell (hUCB-MNC) transplantation on pulmonary hypertension (PH) induced by monocrotaline (MCT) in immunodeficient mice and their distribution. Methods :MCT was administered to BALB/c Slc-nu/nu mice, and PH was induced in mice 4 weeks later. Fresh hUCB-MNCs harvested from a human donor after her delivery were injected intravenously into those PH mice. The medial thickness of pulmonary arterioles, ratio of right ventricular to septum plus left ventricular weight (RV/S+LV), and ratio of acceleration time to ejection time of pulmonary blood flow waveform (AT/ET) were determined 4 weeks after hUCB-MNC transplantation. To reveal the incorporation into the lung, CMTMR-labeled hUCB-MNCs were observed in the lung by fluorescent microscopy. DiR-labeled hUCB-MNCs were detected in the lung and other organs by bioluminescence images. Results : Medial thickness, RV/S+ LV and AT/ET were significantly improved 4 weeks after hUCB-MNC transplantation compared with those in mice without hUCB-MNC transplantation. CMTMR-positive hUCB-MNCs were observed in the lung 3 hours after transplantation. Bioluminescence signals were detected more strongly in the lung than in other organs for 24 hours after transplantation. Conclusions : The results indicate that hUCB-MNCs are incorporated into the lung early after hUCB-MNC transplantation and improve MCT-induced PH
