On scattering of solitons for the Klein-Gordon equation coupled to a particle

We establish the long time soliton asymptotics for the translation invariant nonlinear system consisting of the Klein-Gordon equation coupled to a charged relativistic particle. The coupled system has a six dimensional invariant manifold of the soliton solutions. We show that in the large time approximation any finite energy solution, with the initial state close to the solitary manifold, is a sum of a soliton and a dispersive wave which is a solution of the free Klein-Gordon equation. It is assumed that the charge density satisfies the Wiener condition which is a version of the ``Fermi Golden Rule''. The proof is based on an extension of the general strategy introduced by Soffer and Weinstein, Buslaev and Perelman, and others: symplectic projection in Hilbert space onto the solitary manifold, modulation equations for the parameters of the projection, and decay of the transversal component.Comment: 47 pages, 2 figure

The twist-two chirality violating proton structure function h1(x)h_1(x) measurable in the polarized Drell-Yan process is calculated by means of QCD sum rules at intermediate xx, 0.3<x<0.70.3 < x < 0.7 and Q2510GeV2Q^2 \approx 5-10 GeV^2.Comment: 12 pages + 6 figures , LaTeX, preprint LMU-01-94. a few additions to the text; the figures have been added as uuencoded fil

Accessing Transversity in Double-Spin Asymmetries at the BNL-RHIC

    Get PDF
We give upper bounds for transverse double-spin asymmetries in polarized proton-proton collisions by saturating the positivity constraint for the transversity densities at a low hadronic resolution scale. We consider prompt photon, jet, pion, and heavy flavor production at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Estimates of the expected statistical accuracy for such measurements are presented, taking into account the acceptance of the RHIC detectors.Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures as eps file

Transversity distributions in the nucleon in the large-N_c limit

    Get PDF
We compute the quark and antiquark transversity distributions in the nucleon at a low normalization point of 600 MeV in the large-NcN_c limit, where the nucleon can be described as a soliton of an effective chiral theory (chiral quark-soliton model). The flavor-nonsinglet distributions, δu(x)δd(x)\delta u(x) - \delta d(x) and δuˉ(x)δdˉ(x)\delta\bar u(x) - \delta\bar d(x), appear in leading order of the 1/Nc1/N_c-expansion, while the flavor-singlet distributions, δu(x)+δd(x)\delta u(x) + \delta d(x) and δuˉ(x)+δdˉ(x)\delta\bar u(x) + \delta\bar d(x), are non-zero only in next-to-leading order. The transversity quark and antiquark distributions are found to be significantly different from the longitudinally polarized distributions Δu(x)±Δd(x)\Delta u (x) \pm \Delta d (x) and Δuˉ(x)±Δdˉ(x)\Delta\bar u (x) \pm \Delta\bar d (x), respectively, in contrast to the prediction of the naive non-relativistic quark model. We show that this affects the predictions for the spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan pair production in transversely polarized pp and ppbar collisions.Comment: 45 pages, 16 figure

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to A_TT for prompt photon production

We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section for isolated large-p_T prompt photon production in collisions of transversely polarized protons. We devise a simple method of dealing with the phase space integrals in dimensional regularization in the presence of the cos(2 phi) azimuthal-angular dependence occurring for transverse polarization. Our results allow to calculate the double-spin asymmetry A_TT for this process at next-to-leading order accuracy, which may be used at BNL-RHIC to measure the transversity parton distributions of the proton.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures as eps file

Lambda polarization and single-spin left-right asymmetry in diffractive hadron-hadron collisions

    Get PDF
    We discuss Lambda polarization and single-spin left-right asymmetry in diffractive hadron-hadron scattering at high energies. We show that the physical picture proposed in a recent Letter is consistent with the experimental observation that Λ\Lambda polarization in the diffractive process, ppΛK+ppp\to \Lambda K^+p, is much higher than that in the inclusive reaction, ppΛXpp\to \Lambda X. We make predictions for the left-right asymmetry, A_N, and for the spin transfer, DNNΛD_{NN}^\Lambda, in the single-spin process p()pΛK+pp(\uparrow)p\to \Lambda K^+p and suggest further experimental tests of the proposed picture.Comment: 14 pages, 3 ps-figures.     Azimuthal asymmetries at CLAS: Extraction of e^a(x) and prediction of A_{UL}

    Get PDF
First information on the chirally odd twist-3 proton distribution function e(x) is extracted from the azimuthal asymmetry, A_{LU}, in the electro-production of pions from deeply inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons off unpolarized protons, which has been recently measured by CLAS collaboration. Furthermore parameter-free predictions are made for azimuthal asymmetries, A_{UL}, from scattering of an unpolarized beam on a polarized proton target for CLAS kinematics.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, late

Probing gluon helicity distribution and quark transversity through hyperon polarization in singly polarized pp collisions

We study the polarization of hyperon in different processes in singly polarized pppp collisions, in particular its relation to the polarized parton distributions. We show that by measuring hyperon polarization in particularly chosen processes, one can extract useful information on these parton distributions. We show in particular that, by measuring the Σ+\Sigma^+ polarization in high pTp_T direct photon production process, one can extract information on the gluon helicity distribution; and by measuring the transverse polarization of hyeprons with high pTp_T in singly polarized reactions, one can obtain useful information on the transversity distribution. We present the numerical results obtained for those hyperon polarizations using different models for parton distribution function and those for the spin transfer in fragmentation processes.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Phys. Novel Transversity Properties in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

    Get PDF
The TT-odd distribution functions contributing to transversity properties of the nucleon and their role in fueling nontrivial contributions to azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering are investigated. We use a dynamical model to evaluate these quantities in terms of HERMES kinematics.Comment: 5 pages revtex; 5 eps figures. References added. To appear as a Rapid Communication in Physical Review

Old and new parton distribution and fragmentation functions

A short review of problems with parton distribution functions in nucleons, non-polarized and polarized, is given. The main part is devoted to the transversity distribution its possible measurement and its first experimental probe via spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive DIS. It is argued that the proton transversity distribution could be successfully measured in future DIS experiments with {\it longitudinally} polarized target.Comment: 9 pages, latex, czjphys2.sty, 4 eps figures.
