Productivity of Loessal Grasslands in the Kluane Lake Region, Yukon Territory, and the Beringian "Production Paradox"
The Beringian "Production Paradox" is posed by abundant evidence that large ungulates populated unglaciated portions of northwestern North America and adjacent northeast Asia during the late Pleistocene, while botanical data from the same period suggest a poorly productive tundra environment. It is not clear how the large animals sustained themselves, but portions of Beringia, locally in receipt of loess, may have harbored sufficient forage-producing plants to nourish these animals. Loessal soils in the region today are warm and dry in summer, and are often used as rangelands. The loessal hypothesis was examined on grasslands in the Kluane Lake area, southwest Yukon Territory, at sites which have recently received loess blown from the Slims River delta. The biomass and species diversity of grasslands around the lake increase with the quantity of silt in the soil. Likewise, soil fertility indices, including total nitrogen, available nitrogen (NH4), and total carbon, increase with silt content, particularly at sites where the soil surface has been stable for some time, and a "humified" loess (Ahk) horizon has developed. These results support the hypothesis that sites in receipt of loess may have played a significant role in the vegetative productivity of the Beringian ecosystem.Le paradoxe de production Béringien signale que de nombreux indices témoignent de la présence de larges ongulés dans des régions non-glaciées du nord-ouest de l'Amérique du Nord et du nord-est de l'Asie adjacente durant le Pléistocène supérieur, alors que des données botaniques datant de la même époque suggèrent l'existence d'une toundra peu productive. Comment d'aussi larges animaux ont pu subvenir à leurs besoins n'est pas absolument clair mais certaines portions de la Béringie recevant des apports en loess ont pu récéler suffisamment de plantes fourragères pour les nourrir. Aujourd'hui, les sols loessiques de la région sont chauds et secs durant l'été et sont souvent utilisés comme pâturages. L'hypothèse loessique est examinée pour les prairies des environs du lac Kluane, en particulier dans les sites où des loess provenant du delta de la rivière Slims se sont récemment accumulés. La biomasse et la diversité des espèces dans les prairies avoisinant le lac accroissent avec la quantité de silt contenue dans le sol. De même, les indices de fertilité du sol, incluant l'azote total, l'azote libre (NH4) et le carbone total accroissent avec le contenu en silt, particulièrement dans les sites où la surface est demeurée stable durant un certain temps et où un horizon loessique humifié (Ahk) s'est developpé. Ces résultats confirment l'hypothèse que les sites ayant eu des apports en loess ont pu jouer un rôle significatif dans la productivité végétale de l'écosystème Béringien
CMOS x-rays detector array based on scintillating light guides
This paper describes a pixel imaging array consisting in
400µm x 400µm photodiodes fabricated in CMOS technology.
An array of scintillating CsI:Tl crystals is placed above the
photodiodes. These crystals are encapsulated in aluminum walls, forming
a light path that guides the visible light produced by the
scintillating crystal into the photodiodes. In This way, the x-ray
energy is first converted into visible light which is then detected by
the photodiode at the end of
each light guide. The scintillator is 800 µm thick, absorbing
almost all 20keV x-ray photons.
Usually, the spatial resolution of the scintillating x-ray detectors
is identical to the scintillator thickness. By using the
light guides, the scintillator thickness can be increased
without decreasing the spatial resolution.
The increase of the scintillator thickness is desirable in order
to increase the x-rays absorption efficiency.
Tests carried out on the system show very promising results near
20keV
Linkage design effect on the reliability of surface-micromachined microengines driving a load
The reliability of microengines is a function of the design of the mechanical linkage used to connect the electrostatic actuator to the drive. The authors have completed a series of reliability stress tests on surface micromachined microengines driving an inertial load. In these experiments, the authors used microengines that had pin mechanisms with guides connecting the drive arms to the electrostatic actuators. Comparing this data to previous results using flexure linkages revealed that the pin linkage design was less reliable. The devices were stressed to failure at eight frequencies, both above and below the measured resonance frequency of the microengine. Significant amounts of wear debris were observed both around the hub and pin joint of the drive gear. Additionally, wear tracks were observed in the area where the moving shuttle rubbed against the guides of the pin linkage. At each frequency, they analyzed the statistical data yielding a lifetime (t{sub 50}) for median cycles to failure and {sigma}, the shape parameter of the distribution. A model was developed to describe the failure data based on fundamental wear mechanisms and forces exhibited in mechanical resonant systems. The comparison to the model will be discussed
One Dimensional Chain with Long Range Hopping
The one-dimensional (1D) tight binding model with random nearest neighbor
hopping is known to have a singularity of the density of states and of the
localization length at the band center. We study numerically the effects of
random long range (power-law) hopping with an ensemble averaged magnitude
\expectation{|t_{ij}|} \propto |i-j|^{-\sigma} in the 1D chain, while
maintaining the particle-hole symmetry present in the nearest neighbor model.
We find, in agreement with results of position space renormalization group
techniques applied to the random XY spin chain with power-law interactions,
that there is a change of behavior when the power-law exponent becomes
smaller than 2
A quantum Monte Carlo study of the one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model
Quantum Monte Carlo methods are used to study a quantum phase transition in a
1D Hubbard model with a staggered ionic potential (D). Using recently
formulated methods, the electronic polarization and localization are determined
directly from the correlated ground state wavefunction and compared to results
of previous work using exact diagonalization and Hartree-Fock. We find that the
model undergoes a thermodynamic transition from a band insulator (BI) to a
broken-symmetry bond ordered (BO) phase as the ratio of U/D is increased. Since
it is known that at D = 0 the usual Hubbard model is a Mott insulator (MI) with
no long-range order, we have searched for a second transition to this state by
(i) increasing U at fixed ionic potential (D) and (ii) decreasing D at fixed U.
We find no transition from the BO to MI state, and we propose that the MI state
in 1D is unstable to bond ordering under the addition of any finite ionic
potential. In real 1D systems the symmetric MI phase is never stable and the
transition is from a symmetric BI phase to a dimerized BO phase, with a
metallic point at the transition
Limits on the monopole magnetic field from measurements of the electric dipole moments of atoms, molecules and the neutron
A radial magnetic field can induce a time invariance violating electric
dipole moment (EDM) in quantum systems. The EDMs of the Tl, Cs, Xe and Hg atoms
and the neutron that are produced by such a field are estimated. The
contributions of such a field to the constants, of the T,P-odd
interactions and are also estimated for the TlF, HgF and YbF molecules (where
() is the electron (nuclear) spin and is the molecular
axis). The best limit on the contact monopole field can be obtained from the
measured value of the Tl EDM. The possibility of such a field being produced
from polarization of the vacuum of electrically charged magnetic monopoles
(dyons) by a Coulomb field is discussed, as well as the limit on these dyons.
An alternative mechanism involves chromomagnetic and chromoelectric fields in

A systematic approach to the interrogation and sharing of standardised biofilm signatures
Publicado em "6th International Conference on Practical Applications of Computational Biology & Bioinformatics", ISBN 978-3-642-28838-8The study of microorganism consortia, also known as biofilms, is associated to a number of applications in biotechnology, ecotechnology and clinical domains. A public repository on existing biofilm studies would aid in the design of new studies as well as promote collaborative and incremental work. However, bioinformatics approaches are hampered by the limited access to existing data. Scientific publications summarise the studies whilst results are kept in researchers’ private ad hoc files.
Since the collection and ability to compare existing data is imperative to move forward in biofilm analysis, the present work has addressed the development of a systematic computer-amenable approach to biofilm data organisation and standardisation. A set of in-house studies involving pathogens and employing different state-of-the-art devices and methods of analysis was used to validate the approach. From Social Data Mining to Forecasting Socio-Economic Crisis
Socio-economic data mining has a great potential in terms of gaining a better
understanding of problems that our economy and society are facing, such as
financial instability, shortages of resources, or conflicts. Without
large-scale data mining, progress in these areas seems hard or impossible.
Therefore, a suitable, distributed data mining infrastructure and research
centers should be built in Europe. It also appears appropriate to build a
network of Crisis Observatories. They can be imagined as laboratories devoted
to the gathering and processing of enormous volumes of data on both natural
systems such as the Earth and its ecosystem, as well as on human
techno-socio-economic systems, so as to gain early warnings of impending
events. Reality mining provides the chance to adapt more quickly and more
accurately to changing situations. Further opportunities arise by individually
customized services, which however should be provided in a privacy-respecting
way. This requires the development of novel ICT (such as a self- organizing
Web), but most likely new legal regulations and suitable institutions as well.
As long as such regulations are lacking on a world-wide scale, it is in the
public interest that scientists explore what can be done with the huge data
available. Big data do have the potential to change or even threaten democratic
societies. The same applies to sudden and large-scale failures of ICT systems.
Therefore, dealing with data must be done with a large degree of responsibility
and care. Self-interests of individuals, companies or institutions have limits,
where the public interest is affected, and public interest is not a sufficient
justification to violate human rights of individuals. Privacy is a high good,
as confidentiality is, and damaging it would have serious side effects for

The effect of frequency on the lifetime of a surface micromachined microengine driving a load
Experiments have been performed on surface micromachined microengines driving load gears to determine the effect of the rotation frequency on median cycles to failure. The authors did observe a frequency dependence and have developed a model based on fundamental wear mechanisms and forces exhibited in resonant mechanical systems. Stressing loaded microengines caused observable wear in the rotating joints and in a few instances led to fracture of the pin joint in the drive gear
