Liquid or Dry Nitrogen
Pound for pound of actual nutrients, liquid or dry sources of nitrogen are about the same, and choice depends largely on cost. This article is the first of two dealing with the relative costs of using either
What Cost for Liquid or Dry Nitrogen?
Beyond personal preference and convenience, choice of liquid or solid sources of nitrogen depends mainly on the costs of materials, or application itself and of any application and storage equipment necessary
Short-term fate of rehabilitated orphan black bears released in New Hampshire
We evaluated the release of rehabilitated, orphan black bears (Ursus americanus) in northern New Hampshire. Eleven bears (9 males, 2 females; 40–45 kg) were outfitted with GPS radio-collars and released during May and June of 2011 and 2012. Bears released in 2011 had higher apparent survival and were not observed or reported in any nuisance behavior, whereas no bears released in 2012 survived, and all were involved in minor nuisance behavior. Analysis of GPS locations indicated that bears in 2011 had access to and used abundant natural forages or habitat. Conversely, abundance of soft and hard mast was lower in 2012, suggesting that nuisance behavior, and consequently survival, was inversely related to availability of natural forage. Dispersal from the release site ranged from 3.4–73 km across both years, and no bear returned to the rehabilitation facility (117 km distance). Rehabilitation appears to be a valid method for addressing certain orphan bear issues in New Hampshire
Software Defined Radio Architecture Contributions to Next Generation Space Communications
Space communications architecture concepts, comprising the elements of the system, the interactions among them, and the principles that govern their development, are essential factors in developing National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) future exploration and science missions. Accordingly, vital architectural attributes encompass flexibility, the extensibility to insert future capabilities, and to enable evolution to provide interoperability with other current and future systems. Space communications architectures and technologies for this century must satisfy a growing set of requirements, including those for Earth sensing, collaborative observation missions, robotic scientific missions, human missions for exploration of the Moon and Mars where surface activities require supporting communications, and in-space observatories for observing the earth, as well as other star systems and the universe. An advanced, integrated, communications infrastructure will enable the reliable, multipoint, high-data-rate capabilities needed on demand to provide continuous, maximum coverage for areas of concentrated activity. Importantly, the cost/value proposition of the future architecture must be an integral part of its design; an affordable and sustainable architecture is indispensable within anticipated future budget environments. Effective architecture design informs decision makers with insight into the capabilities needed to efficiently satisfy the demanding space-communication requirements of future missions and formulate appropriate requirements. A driving requirement for the architecture is the extensibility to address new requirements and provide low-cost on-ramps for new capabilities insertion, ensuring graceful growth as new functionality and new technologies are infused into the network infrastructure. In addition to extensibility, another key architectural attribute of the space communication equipment's interoperability with other NASA communications systems, as well as those communications and navigation systems operated by international space agencies and civilian and government agencies. In this paper, we review the philosophies, technologies, architectural attributes, mission services, and communications capabilities that form the structure of candidate next-generation integrated communication architectures for space communications and navigation. A key area that this paper explores is from the development and operation of the software defined radio for the NASA Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Testbed currently on the International Space Station (ISS). Evaluating the lessons learned from development and operation feed back into the communications architecture. Leveraging the reconfigurability provides a change in the way that operations are done and must be considered. Quantifying the impact on the NASA Space Telecommunications Radio System (STRS) software defined radio architecture provides feedback to keep the standard useful and up to date. NASA is not the only customer of these radios. Software defined radios are developed for other applications, and taking advantage of these developments promotes an architecture that is cost effective and sustainable. Developments in the following areas such as an updated operating environment, higher data rates, networking and security can be leveraged. The ability to sustain an architecture that uses radios for multiple markets can lower costs and keep new technology infused
Do β-Defensins and Other Antimicrobial Peptides Play a Role in Neuroimmune Function and Neurodegeneration?
It is widely accepted that the brain responds to mechanical trauma and development of most neurodegenerative diseases with an inflammatory sequelae that was once thought exclusive to systemic immunity. Mostly cationic peptides, such as the β-defensins, originally assigned an antimicrobial function are now recognized as mediators of both innate and adaptive immunity. Herein supporting evidence is presented for the hypothesis that neuropathological changes associated with chronic disease conditions of the CNS involve abnormal expression and regulatory function of specific antimicrobial peptides. It is also proposed that these alterations exacerbate proinflammatory conditions within the brain that ultimately potentiate the neurodegenerative process
Col-OSSOS: Colors of the Interstellar Planetesimal 1I/`Oumuamua
The recent discovery by Pan-STARRS1 of 1I/2017 U1 (`Oumuamua), on an unbound
and hyperbolic orbit, offers a rare opportunity to explore the planetary
formation processes of other stars, and the effect of the interstellar
environment on a planetesimal surface. 1I/`Oumuamua's close encounter with the
inner Solar System in 2017 October was a unique chance to make observations
matching those used to characterize the small-body populations of our own Solar
System. We present near-simultaneous g, r, and J photometry
and colors of 1I/`Oumuamua from the 8.1-m Frederick C. Gillett Gemini North
Telescope, and photometry from the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope. Our
grJ observations are directly comparable to those from the
high-precision Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (Col-OSSOS),
which offer unique diagnostic information for distinguishing between outer
Solar System surfaces. The J-band data also provide the highest signal-to-noise
measurements made of 1I/`Oumuamua in the near-infrared. Substantial, correlated
near-infrared and optical variability is present, with the same trend in both
near-infrared and optical. Our observations are consistent with 1I/`Oumuamua
rotating with a double-peaked period of hours and being a
highly elongated body with an axial ratio of at least 5.3:1, implying that it
has significant internal cohesion. The color of the first interstellar
planetesimal is at the neutral end of the range of Solar System and
solar-reflectance colors: it is like that of some dynamically excited objects
in the Kuiper belt and the less-red Jupiter Trojans.Comment: Accepted to ApJ
Decreasing net primary production due to drought and slight decreases in solar radiation in China from 2000 to 2012
Terrestrial ecosystems have continued to provide the critical service of slowing the atmospheric CO2 growth rate. Terrestrial net primary productivity (NPP) is thought to be a major contributing factor to this trend. Yet our ability to estimate NPP at the regional scale remains limited due to large uncertainties in the response of NPP to multiple interacting climate factors and uncertainties in the driver data sets needed to estimate NPP. In this study, we introduced an improved NPP algorithm that used local driver data sets and parameters in China. We found that bias decreased by 30% for gross primary production (GPP) and 17% for NPP compared with the widely used global GPP and NPP products, respectively. From 2000 to 2012, a pixel-level analysis of our improved NPP for the region of China showed an overall decreasing NPP trend of 4.65 Tg C a−1. Reductions in NPP were largest for the southern forests of China (−5.38 Tg C a−1), whereas minor increases in NPP were found for North China (0.65 Tg C a−1). Surprisingly, reductions in NPP were largely due to decreases in solar radiation (82%), rather than the more commonly expected effects of drought (18%). This was because for southern China, the interannual variability of NPP was more sensitive to solar radiation (R2 in 0.29–0.59) relative to precipitation (R2 \u3c 0.13). These findings update our previous knowledge of carbon uptake responses to climate change in terrestrial ecosystems of China and highlight the importance of shortwave radiation in driving vegetation productivity for the region, especially for tropical forests
Fine map of the Gct1 spontaneous ovarian granulosa cell tumor locus
The spontaneous development of juvenile-onset, ovarian granulosa cell (GC) tumors in the SWR/Bm (SWR) inbred mouse strain is a model for juvenile-type GC tumors that appear in infants and young girls. GC tumor susceptibility is supported by multiple Granulosa cell tumor (Gct) loci, but the Gct1 locus on Chr 4 derived from SWR strain background is fundamental for GC tumor development and uniquely responsive to the androgenic precursor dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). To resolve the location of Gct1 independently from other susceptibility loci, Gct1 was isolated in a congenic strain that replaces the distal segment of Chr 4 in SWR mice with a 47 × 10(6)-bp genomic segment from the Castaneus/Ei (CAST) strain. SWR females homozygous for the CAST donor segment were confirmed to be resistant to DHEA- and testosterone-induced GC tumorigenesis, indicating successful exchange of CAST alleles (Gct1(CA)) for SWR alleles (Gct1(SW)) at this tumor susceptibility locus. A series of nested, overlapping, congenic sublines was created to fine-map Gct1 based on GC tumor susceptibility under the influence of pubertal DHEA treatment. Twelve informative lines have resolved the Gct1 locus to a 1.31 × 10(6)-bp interval on mouse Chr 4, a region orthologous to human Chr 1p36.22.
