Real-world Quantum Sensors: Evaluating Resources for Precision Measurement
Quantum physics holds the promise of enabling certain tasks with better
performance than possible when only classical resources are employed. The
quantum phenomena present in many experiments signify nonclassical behavior,
but do not always imply superior performance. Quantifying the enhancement
achieved from quantum behavior requires careful analysis of the resources
involved. We analyze the specific case of parameter estimation using an optical
interferometer, where increased precision can be achieved using quantum probe
states. Common performance measures are examined and it is shown that some
overestimate the improvement. For the simplest experimental case we compare the
different measures and show this overestimate explicitly. We give the preferred
analysis of real-world experiments and calculate benchmark values for
experimental parameters necessary to realize a precision enhancement.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Requests for malaria prevention advice to Public Health England, Malaria Reference Laboratory: a retrospective observational study.
BACKGROUND: The Malaria Reference Laboratory (MRL) provides a specialist advisory service for complex queries from healthcare professionals. This study was conducted to examine the types of queries that general practitioners and nurses ask around malaria prophylaxis, to identify issues which are not obvious from existing easily available sources. METHODS: We reviewed all the faxed requests received over a period of 6 months at the MRL. RESULTS: There were a total of 608 queries (104 concerning children) relating to 450 travellers. 98% of requests were from general practice (GP or practice nurse). The most common enquiries were about travellers to multiple destinations (95/529, 17.96%), prolonged duration of travel (70/529, 13.23%), the immunosuppressed (38/529, 7.18%), potential drug interactions (69/529, 13.04%), pregnancy and conception (36, 6.81%). 79/529 queries related to patients with multiple conditions requiring expert advice from the MRL. 27% of the enquiries could have been answered by consulting the UK malaria prophylaxis guidelines available on the MRL site. CONCLUSION: Most queries where practitioners requested help were not easily answered with existing guidelines. Pregnancy and epilepsy are areas where guidance needs strengthening. Difficulties for practitioners were multifactorial, it would be difficult to address all scenarios in guidelines without making them unwieldy

Assimilation of TES data from the Mars Global Surveyor scientifc mapping phase
The Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES)aboard Mars Global Surveyor has produced data which cover almost two Martian years so far (during its scientific mapping phase). Thermal profiles for the atmosphere below 40 km and total dust opacities can be retrieved from TES nadir spectra and assimilated into a Mars general circulation model (MGCM), by using the assimilation techniques described in detail by Lewis et al. (2002). This paper describes some preliminary results from assimilations of temperature data from the period Ls=141°- 270° corresponding to late northern summer until winter solstice on Mars. Work in progress is devoted to assimilate both temperature and total dust opacity data for the full period for which they are already available
Metal-catalyst-free growth of silica nanowires and carbon nanotubes using Ge nanostructures
The use of Ge nanostructures is investigated for the metal-catalyst-free growth of silica nanowires and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Silica nanowires with diameters of 10-50 nm and lengths of ? 1 ?m were grown from SiGe islands, Ge dots, and Ge nanoparticles. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) reveal that the nanowires grow from oxide nanoparticles on the sample surface. We propose that the growth mechanism is thermal diffusion of oxide through the GeO2 nanostructures. CNTs with diameters 0.6-2.5 nm and lengths of less than a few ?m were similarly grown by chemical vapor deposition from different types of Ge nanostructures. Raman measurements show the presence of radial breathing mode peaks and the absence of the disorder induced D-band, indicating single walled CNTs with a low defect density. HRTEM images reveal that the CNTs also grow from oxide nanoparticles, comprising a mixture of GeO2 and SiO2
CHC students online : responses to course organisation
Previous research by the authors has shown that Confucian Heritage Students participating in online problem solving discussions show a high degree of message postings that are related to the organization of the course of study, rather than to its contents and intellectual challenges. The authors argue that this is consistent with the more broadly based research outcomes relating to the achieving strategy that is quite typically exhibited among CHC students. This interview based study explores the perceptions of CHC students as they engage with collaborative learning online, and shows that the concerns relate to matters to do with assessment, with the reliability and timeliness of group member inputs, and the possibilities of plagiarism.<br /

Growth of Carbon Nanotubes on HfO2 towards Highly Sensitive Nano-Sensors
Carbon nanotube (CNT) growth on HfO2 is reported for the first time. The process uses a combination of Ge and Fe nanoparticles and achieves an increase in CNT density from 0.15 to 6.2 mm length/mm2 compared with Fe nanoparticles alone. The synthesized CNTs are assessed by the fabrication of back-gate CNT field-effect transistors with Al source/drain contacts for nano-sensor applications. The devices exhibit excellent p-type behavior with an Ion=Ioff ratio of 105 and a steep sub-threshold slope of 130 mV/dec
A cohort study of the recovery of health and wellbeing following colorectal cancer (CREW study): protocol paper
Background: the number of people surviving colorectal cancer has doubled in recent years. While much of the literature suggests that most people return to near pre-diagnosis status following surgery for colorectal cancer, this literature has largely focused on physical side effects. Longitudinal studies in colorectal cancer have either been small scale or taken a narrow focus on recovery after surgery. There is a need for a comprehensive, long-term study exploring all aspects of health and wellbeing in colorectal cancer patients. The aim of this study is to establish the natural history of health and wellbeing in people who have been treated for colorectal cancer. People have different dispositions, supports and resources, likely resulting in individual differences in restoration of health and wellbeing. The protocol described in this paper is of a study which will identify who is most at risk of problems, assess how quickly people return to a state of subjective health and wellbeing, and will measure factors which influence the course of recovery. Methods: this is a prospective, longitudinal cohort study following 1000 people with colorectal cancer over a period of two years, recruiting from 30 NHS cancer treatment centres across the UK. Questionnaires will be administered prior to surgery, and 3, 9, 15 and 24 months after surgery, with the potential to return to this cohort to explore on-going issues related to recovery after cancer. Discussion: outcomes will help inform health care providers about what helps or hinders rapid and effective recovery from cancer, and identify areas for intervention development to aid this process.
