    Correlations and Binding in 4D Dynamical Triangulation

    We study correlations on the euclidean spacetimes generated in Monte Carlo simulations of the model. In the elongated phase, curvature correlations appear to fall off like a fractional power. Near the transition to the crumpled phase this power is consistent with 4.     Hollands et al provide an important contribution to evidence on the potential impact of DNA-based disease risk information on health behaviours. Based on the findings of their systematic review and meta-analysis, the authors conclude that: “existing evidence does not support expectations that such interventions could play a major role in motivating behaviour change to improve population health (1).” However, we contend that this conclusion is premature. In particular, there has been limited population-based research using risk estimates based on multiple genomic variants, for a broad range of health behaviours, and lack of evaluation of whether the impact may be influenced by the presence of other risk factors. We also agree with other rapid responses (Hay and McBride, Janssens, Burton) that highlight other limitations of the previous studies and the need for more research to more fully assess the potential role of genomics in facilitating behaviour change

    To ascertain whether business strategy is relevant for national institutions a distinction is made between private businesses and institutions as “social business units” of a country. In “social businesses” as well as in private businesses, efficiency is the desired outcome. However, in private businesses it is about sustainable competitive advantage while in institutions it is about policies to resolve the socio and economic problems that a country faces in order to increase welfare of society as a whole. The conclusion is that business strategy form the positioning and resource-based perspectives, does not apply to social businesses such as national institutions

    Cooperation Issues in Developing the BOP Market

    Interest in the notion that there is an untapped market with significant buying power hidden at the base of the economic pyramid (BOP) has enjoyed increased attention over the last few years. The discourse on this matter is lively and abounds with opposing opinions. Although this discourse is acknowledged in this paper, it is argued that benefits can be derived for all parties if one considers partner cooperation issues (or problems) in a structured way. Partner cooperation in the case of this research refers to the cooperation between multinational information technology companies and local partners in African countries. This area is of interest because of (frequently high) expectations that information and communication technology (ICT) can make a contribution toward development goals in BOP markets. However this is not always achieved and, as has been found by several researchers, this unfavorable outcome is, amongst other things caused by cooperation problems between partners. The basic argument of this paper is that successful contribution of ICT to development goals is partly dependent on the nature of the cooperation between partners. Thus if there is a need to assess the contribution of ICT, then one needs to look further than just the basic quantitative measures and include cooperation issues as criteria for success. The purpose of the research reported in this paper was therefore to take one step closer towards a framework of cooperation issues in so-called BOP projects, specifically in the ICT arena, with the ultimate aim of developing a way to assess factors that may present a risk to the success of these projects. This framework could serve as the foundation for further research into developing a diagnostic instrument for this purpose. The research was conducted in 10 BOP projects involving multinational ICT companies, which were studied as separate case studies. Qualitative data was collected using the case study method and the data was analyzed for emerging patterns. It was found that problems with partner cooperation revolve around six core categories. These are explained in this paper. It is suggested that further research can serve to interrogate the proposed framework

    A comparative study of Abelian and Monopole dominance in the Laplacian and Maximally Abelian projected gauges is carried out. Clear evidence for both types of dominance is obtained for the Laplacian projection. Surprisingly, the evidence is much more ambiguous in the Maximally Abelian gauge.     Design of an optical nanoantenna with focusing subwavelength grating couplers and metallic reflector

    In the development of integrated large-scale optical phase array, compact optical nanoantennas are needed. For high resolution arrays, the nanoantenna footprint and the separation between them should be as small as possible to reduce the number of interference orders in the far field [1]. In the development of this nanoantennas in our InP membrane on Silicon (IMOS) platform [2], we use deeply etch focusing grating to reduce the size [3]. In order to increase the optical power emitting up, we add a metal reflector of Silver underneath the semiconductor with a small buffer of 50 nm of 푆푖푂2. This metal layer will also works as a thermal heater, which will change the optical properties of the semiconductor changing the direction of the upcoming light. The last element to be add is a subwavelength ridge which reduces the unwanted Fresnel reflections by reducing the refractive index contrast [3]
