The internationalization of science and its influence on academic entrepreneurship
We conjecture that the mobility of academic scientists increases the propensity of such agents to engage in academic entrepreneurship. Our empirical analysis is based on a survey of researchers at the Max Planck Society in Germany. We find that mobile scientists are more likely to become nascent entrepreneurs. Thus, it appears that citizenship and foreign-education are important determinants of the early stages of academic entrepreneurship
Contribution of a time-dependent metric on the dynamics of an interface between two immiscible electro-magnetically controllable Fluids
We consider the case of a deformable material interface between two
immiscible moving media, both of them being magnetiable. The time dependence of
the metric at the interface introduces a non linear term, proportional to the
mean curvature, in the surface dynamical equations of mass momentum and angular
momentum. We take into account the effects of that term also in the singular
magnetic and electric fields inside the interface which lead to the existence
of currents and charges densities through the interface, from the derivation of
the Maxwell equations inside both bulks and the interface. Also, we give the
expression for the entropy production and of the different thermo-dynamical
fluxes. Our results enlarge previous results from other theories where the
specific role of the time dependent surface metric was insufficiently stressed.Comment: 25 page
What Determines the Efficiency of Regional Innovation Systems?
We assess the efficiency of regional innovation systems (RIS) in Germany by means of a knowledge production function. This function relates private sector research and development (R&D) activity in a region to the number of inventions that have been registered by residents of that region. Different measures and estimation approaches lead to rather similar assessments. We find that both spillovers within the private sector as well as from universities and other public research institutions have a positive effect on the efficiency of private sector R&D in the respective region. It is not the mere presence and size of public research institutions, but rather the intensity of interactions between private and public sector R&D that leads to high RIS efficiency. We find that relationship between the diversity of a regions industry structure and the efficiency of its innovation system is inversely u-shaped. Regions dominated by large establishments tend to be less efficient than regions with a lower average establishment size

Coupling between Marangoni and Rosensweig instabilities
Two semi-infinite incompressible and immiscible viscous fluids of infinite lateral extent
are considered in the gravity field. One of them is ferromagnetic and the other is a usual
Newtonian liquid. Such a system is submitted to a magnetic field normal to the reference
flat surface, which separates the two bulks. Developing the linear stability analysis, we
show that the Rosensweig critical values for transverse waves remain unaffected by a
solutal or thermal Marangoni instability
