In this thesis I am presenting the topic The German\u27s longing for Italy or Germans\u27 Italy-Nostalgia . This paper covers the development of Germans\u27 longing for Italian culture, art, food, fashion, music, landscapes, beaches and the Country\u27s weather. It presents the historical content of how far in history Germans traveled to the Country of their ideals, inspiration and education. This paper contains facts about similarities between both countries, as well as their contrarieties. I am presenting the evidence of development of German\u27s longing, starting at Dürers era in 1494, Winckelmann in 1758, and Goethe in 1786. I am expanding my research up until today, including Hitlers and Mussolinis dictatorships, Italian guest workers immigrating to Germany after Worldwar II, Film, Music and Cuisine. My thesis has been backed up through book research, articles, online resources and personal experience. I have lived in Germany for over 30 years and I have strong roots to Italy, the Country of my origin and nativity; therefore I am able to describe both countries\u27 development also through personal experience. Today, we can still witness Germans longing for Italian history, culture, art, food, music, fashion, education and most of all, vacation. Germans\u27 Italy-Nostalgia is still present today, and it has left roots that have been growing for Centuries

The change agent teaching model : Educating entrepreneurial leaders to help solve grand societal challenges

    Get PDF
Higher education is increasingly expected to educate change agents who can help with solving grand societal challenges. Social and sustainable entrepreneurship (SSE) education and social and sustainable leadership (SSL) education provide promising directions to develop the education that prepares these students for their future roles. However, both educations are part of different research streams and have their respective pedagogical approaches. In this systematic literature review, we identify the differences and similarities between SSE and SSL education. We used the teaching model framework to map systematically the elements of the teaching and learning process. Our results show that the different streams share the aim of educating change agents in authentic, collaborative learning processes that are experiential in nature and challenge students to create value for others. However, SSE education focuses more on creating societal value, whereas SSL education captures the personal development of students. Based on the review, we present an overarching teaching model for educating change agents. Our teaching model can guide practitioners to design change agent education. It illustrates the urgency to change pedagogies fundamentally and how students, staff, and teaching infrastructures should be approached using such pedagogies to realize impactful change agent education

Comprehensive analysis of the base composition around the transcription start site in Metazoa

BACKGROUND: The transcription start site of a metazoan gene remains poorly understood, mostly because there is no clear signal present in all genes. Now that several sequenced metazoan genomes have been annotated, we have been able to compare the base composition around the transcription start site for all annotated genes across multiple genomes. RESULTS: The most prominent feature in the base compositions is a significant local variation in G+C content over a large region around the transcription start site. The change is present in all animal phyla but the extent of variation is different between distinct classes of vertebrates, and the shape of the variation is completely different between vertebrates and arthropods. Furthermore, the height of the variation correlates with CpG frequencies in vertebrates but not in invertebrates and it also correlates with gene expression, especially in mammals. We also detect GC and AT skews in all clades (where %G is not equal to %C or %A is not equal to %T respectively) but these occur in a more confined region around the transcription start site and in the coding region. CONCLUSIONS: The dramatic changes in nucleotide composition in humans are a consequence of CpG nucleotide frequencies and of gene expression, the changes in Fugu could point to primordial CpG islands, and the changes in the fly are of a totally different kind and unrelated to dinucleotide frequencies

Calypso's Cauldron: The ritual ingredients of early-Byzantine love spells

Also cited as a journal article: Byzantina Australiensia, 2005; 15:161-170In the Greco-Roman world there were charms to increase charisma and affection, viagra potions, aphrodisiacs, spells that led their victim to the instigator, and binding spells that made certain of the impediment of rival suitors or even a third party in a love triangle. Food, drink, and spices played an integral part in the supernatural rituals which aided these "romantic" intentions. Apples could be thrown at a potential mate, the aphrodisiac properties of wine could be utilised for seduction, and various simple or elaborate offerings of food and spices could be presented to eros in order to drive an individual wild with lust. This paper will discuss such uses of food and drink in Byzantine rituals of desire. Furthermore it will consider these actions within their social context, focussing particularly on aspects of gender. Thus it will be proposed that in both the ritualised ingredients and actions of desire can be seen a reflection, and even inversion, of social perceptions and expectations of feminine and masculine behaviour.Silke Trzcionkahttp://home.vicnet.net.au/~byzaus/conferences/13thabstracts.htm
