Bayesian Symbol Detection in Wireless Relay Networks via Likelihood-Free Inference
This paper presents a general stochastic model developed for a class of
cooperative wireless relay networks, in which imperfect knowledge of the
channel state information at the destination node is assumed. The framework
incorporates multiple relay nodes operating under general known non-linear
processing functions. When a non-linear relay function is considered, the
likelihood function is generally intractable resulting in the maximum
likelihood and the maximum a posteriori detectors not admitting closed form
solutions. We illustrate our methodology to overcome this intractability under
the example of a popular optimal non-linear relay function choice and
demonstrate how our algorithms are capable of solving the previously
intractable detection problem. Overcoming this intractability involves
development of specialised Bayesian models. We develop three novel algorithms
to perform detection for this Bayesian model, these include a Markov chain
Monte Carlo Approximate Bayesian Computation (MCMC-ABC) approach; an Auxiliary
Variable MCMC (MCMC-AV) approach; and a Suboptimal Exhaustive Search Zero
Forcing (SES-ZF) approach. Finally, numerical examples comparing the symbol
error rate (SER) performance versus signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the three
detection algorithms are studied in simulated examples
International Labor Standards, Soft Regulation, and National Government Roles
[Excerpt] In this article, we briefly describe the different approaches to the regulation of international labor standards, and then argue for a new role for national governments based on soft rather than hard regulation approaches. We argue that this new role shows potential for significantly enhancing progress in international labor standards, since it enables governments to articulate a position without having to deal with the enforcement issues that hard regulation mandates. We justify this new role for governments based on the increasing use of soft regulation in the international arena. Of course, this approach is not without its own problems, but given that existing approaches have all provided imperfect solutions to the problem of improving labor standards globally, re-visiting the role of national governments is in our view, highly important
Specific Heat of Zn-Doped YBa_{2}Cu_3O_{6.95}: Possible Evidence for Kondo Screening in the Superconducting State
The magnetic field dependence of the specific heat of Zn-doped single
crystals of YBa_{2}Cu_3O_{6.95} was measured between 2 and 10 K and up to 8
Tesla. Doping levels of 0, 0.15%, 0.31%, and 1% were studied and compared. In
particular we searched for the Schottky anomaly associated with the Zn-induced

Effect of Student Involvement on Patient Perceptions of Ambulatory Care Visits
OBJECTIVE: To determine if patient satisfaction with ambulatory care visits differs when medical students participate in the visit.
DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial.
SETTING: Academic general internal medicine practice.
PARTICIPANTS: Outpatients randomly assigned to see an attending physician only (N = 66) or an attending physician plus medical student (N = 68).
MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Patient perceptions of the office visit were determined by telephone survey. Overall office visit satisfaction was higher for the “attending physician only” group (61% vs 48% excellent), although this was not statistically significant (P = .16). There was no difference between the study groups for patient ratings of their physician overall (80% vs 85% excellent; P = .44). In subsidiary analyses, patients who rated their attending physician as “excellent” rated the overall office visit significantly higher in the “attending physician only” group (74% vs 55%; P = .04). Among patients in the “attending physician plus medical student” group, 40% indicated that medical student involvement “probably” or “definitely” did not improve their care, and 30% responded that they “probably” or “definitely” did not want to see a student at subsequent office visits.
CONCLUSIONS: Although our sample size was small, we found no significant decrement in patient ratings of office visit satisfaction from medical student involvement in a global satisfaction survey. However, a significant number of patients expressed discontent with student involvement in the visit when asked directly. Global assessment of patient satisfaction may lack sensitivity for detection of dissatisfaction. Future research in this area should employ more sensitive measures of patient satisfaction
Kondo screening in d-wave superconductors in a Zeeman field and implications for STM spectra of Zn-doped cuprates
We consider the screening of an impurity moment in a d-wave superconductor
under the influence of a Zeeman magnetic field. Using the Numerical
Renormalization Group technique, we investigate the resulting pseudogap Kondo
problem, in particular the field-induced crossover behavior in the vicinity of
the zero-field boundary quantum phase transition. The impurity spectral
function and the resulting changes in the local host density of states are
calculated, giving specific predictions for high-field STM measurements on

Persistence of Li Induced Kondo Moments in the Superconducting State of Cuprates
We measure the magnetic susceptibility nearby Li spinless impurities in the
superconducting phase of the high Tc cuprate YBaCuO. The induced moment which
was found to exist above Tc persists below Tc. In the underdoped regime, it
retains its Curie law below Tc. In contrast, near optimal doping, the large
Kondo screening observed above Tc (T_K=135 K) is strongly reduced below Tc as
expected theoretically when the superconducting gap develops. This moment still
extends essentially on its 4 near neighbour Cu, showing the persistence of AF
correlations in the superconducting state. A direct comparison with recent STM
