Background:The present study was conducted to determine ossiculoplasty using auto-graft malleus and incus.Materials & Methods: The present study was conducted on 64 patients selected for ossiculoplasty of both genders. Based on ossicular defects, the type of ossiculoplasty was planned. Results: Age group 0-20 years had 4 males and 3 females, 20-40 years had 8 males and 5 females, 40-60 years had 10 males and 8 females and >60 years had 14 males and 12 females. Pre- operatively mean ABG in age group 0-20 years was 34.50 and post- operatively was 12.94 and ABG gain was 21.56, in age group 20-40 years was 35.72, 12.24 and 23.48 pre- operatively, post- operatively and ABG gain respectively. In age group 40-60 years was 34.65, 13.26 and 21.39 pre- operatively, post- operatively and ABG gain respectively. Incus and stapes were involved in 16 cases, pre- operative ABG (dB) was 38.52 and post- operative ABG (dB) was 17.24, only incus in 34, pre- operative ABG (dB) was 33.60 and post- operative ABG (dB) was 11.58, all involved in 5 cases, pre- operative ABG (dB) was 41.20 and post- operative ABG (dB) was 20.24 and incus and malleus were involved in 9 cases, pre- operative ABG (dB) was 29.62 and post- operative ABG (dB) was 12.06. Conclusion:Authors found that maximum gain was achieved with only incus followed by incus and stapes, all involved and incus and malleus

Background:The present study was conducted to compare tympanoplasty with or without mastoidectomy in treatment of chronic suppurative otitis media tubotympanic type.Materials & Methods: The present study was conducted on 82 patients of chronic suppurative otitis media tubotympanic type of both genders. Patients were randomly divided into 2 groups of 41 each. Group I patients underwent tympanoplasty alone and group II patients underwent cortical mastoidectomy with tympanoplasty. Results: Duration of ear discharge was 4-6 years in 23 in group  I and 27 in group II, 7-10 years in 12 in group I and 10 in group II and >10 years in 6 in group I and 4 in group II. Degree of hearing loss was mild in 34 in group I and 36 in group II and moderate in 7 in group I and 5 in group II. Size of perforation was medium in 4 in group I and 9 in group II, large in 26 in group I and 22 in group II and subtotal in 11 in group I and 10 in group II. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). The mean audiological assessment before was 38.12, after was 28.46 and benefit was 9.66 in group I and 38.24, 26.4 and 11.84 respectively in group II. The difference was significant (P< 0.05).Conclusion:Authors found that both the methods of treating cases of chronic suppurative otitis media tubotympanic type were equally effective

Integrated Automatic Optical Inspection and Image Processing Procedure for Smart Sensing in Production Lines

    No full text
An integrated automatic optical inspection (iAOI) system with a procedure was proposed for a printed circuit board (PCB) production line, in which pattern distortions and performance deviations appear with process variations. The iAOI system was demonstrated in a module comprising a camera and lens, showing improved supportiveness for commercially available hardware. The iAOI procedure was realized in a serial workflow of image registration, threshold setting, image gradient, marker alignment, and geometric transformation; furthermore, five operations with numerous functions were prepared for image processing. In addition to the system and procedure, a graphical user interface (GUI) that displays sequential image operation results with analyzed characteristics was established for simplicity. To demonstrate its effectiveness, self-complementary Archimedean spiral antenna (SCASA) samples fabricated via standard PCB fabrication and intentional pattern distortions were demonstrated. The results indicated that, compared with other existing methods, the proposed iAOI system and procedure provide unified and standard operations with efficiency, which result in scientific and unambiguous judgments on pattern quality. Furthermore, we showed that when an appropriate artificial intelligence model is ready, the electromagnetic characteristic projection for SCASAs can be simply obtained through the GUI

A SUMOylation-dependent switch of RAB7 governs intracellular life and pathogenesis of Salmonella Typhimurium.

Salmonella Typhimurium is an intracellular pathogen that causes gastroenteritis in humans. Aided by a battery of effector proteins, S. Typhimurium resides intracellularly in a specialized vesicle, called the Salmonella-containing vacuole (SCV) that utilizes the host endocytic vesicular transport pathway (VTP). Here, we probed the possible role of SUMOylation, a post-translation modification pathway, in SCV biology. Proteome analysis by complex mass-spectrometry (MS/MS) revealed a dramatically altered SUMO-proteome (SUMOylome) in S. Typhimurium-infected cells. RAB7, a component of VTP, was key among several crucial proteins identified in our study. Detailed MS/MS assays, in vitro SUMOylation assays and structural docking analysis revealed SUMOylation of RAB7 (RAB7A) specifically at lysine 175. A SUMOylation-deficient RAB7 mutant (RAB7K175R) displayed longer half-life, was beneficial to SCV dynamics and functionally deficient. Collectively, the data revealed that RAB7 SUMOylation blockade by S. Typhimurium ensures availability of long-lived but functionally compromised RAB7, which was beneficial to the pathogen. Overall, this SUMOylation-dependent switch of RAB7 controlled by S. Typhimurium is an unexpected mode of VTP pathway regulation, and unveils a mechanism of broad interest well beyond Salmonella-host crosstalk.
