Loop algebras, gauge invariants and a new completely integrable system

One fruitful motivating principle of much research on the family of integrable systems known as ``Toda lattices'' has been the heuristic assumption that the periodic Toda lattice in an affine Lie algebra is directly analogous to the nonperiodic Toda lattice in a finite-dimensional Lie algebra. This paper shows that the analogy is not perfect. A discrepancy arises because the natural generalization of the structure theory of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras is not the structure theory of loop algebras but the structure theory of affine Kac-Moody algebras. In this paper we use this natural generalization to construct the natural analog of the nonperiodic Toda lattice. Surprisingly, the result is not the periodic Toda lattice but a new completely integrable system on the periodic Toda lattice phase space. This integrable system is prescribed purely in terms of Lie-theoretic data. The commuting functions are precisely the gauge-invariant functions one obtains by viewing elements of the loop algebra as connections on a bundle over S1S^1

The interaction energy of well-separated Skyrme solitons

We prove that the asymptotic field of a Skyrme soliton of any degree has a non-trivial multipole expansion. It follows that every Skyrme soliton has a well-defined leading multipole moment. We derive an expression for the linear interaction energy of well-separated Skyrme solitons in terms of their leading multipole moments. This expression can always be made negative by suitable rotations of one of the Skyrme solitons in space and iso-space.We show that the linear interaction energy dominates for large separation if the orders of the Skyrme solitons' multipole moments differ by at most two. In that case there are therefore always attractive forces between the Skyrme solitons.Comment: 27 pages amslate

Sympathetic Cooling of Lithium by Laser-cooled Cesium

    Get PDF
We present first indications of sympathetic cooling between two neutral, optically trapped atomic species. Lithium and cesium atoms are simultaneously stored in an optical dipole trap formed by the focus of a CO2_2 laser, and allowed to interact for a given period of time. The temperature of the lithium gas is found to decrease when in thermal contact with cold cesium. The timescale of thermalization yields an estimate for the Li-Cs cross-section.Comment: 4 pages, proceedings of ICOLS 200

Determination of lunar ilmentite abundances from remotely sensed data

    Get PDF
The mapping of ilmenite on the surface of the moon is a necessary precursor to the investigation of prospective lunar base sites. Telescopic observations of the moon using a variety of narrow bandpass optical interference filters are being performed as a preliminary means of achieving this goal. Specifically, ratios of images obtained using filters centered at 0.40 and 0.56 microns provide quantitative estimates of TiO2 abundances. Analysis of preliminary distribution maps of TiO2 concentrations allows identification of specific high-Ti areas. Investigations of these areas using slit spectra in the range 0.03 to 0.85 microns are underway to search for discrete spectral signatures attributable to ilmenite

Sensitivity to Timing and Order in Human Visual Cortex

    Get PDF
Visual recognition takes a small fraction of a second and relies on the cascade of signals along the ventral visual stream. Given the rapid path through multiple processing steps between photoreceptors and higher visual areas, information must progress from stage to stage very quickly. This rapid progression of information suggests that fine temporal details of the neural response may be important to the how the brain encodes visual signals. We investigated how changes in the relative timing of incoming visual stimulation affect the representation of object information by recording intracranial field potentials along the human ventral visual stream while subjects recognized objects whose parts were presented with varying asynchrony. Visual responses along the ventral stream were sensitive to timing differences between parts as small as 17 ms. In particular, there was a strong dependency on the temporal order of stimulus presentation, even at short asynchronies. This sensitivity to the order of stimulus presentation provides evidence that the brain may use differences in relative timing as a means of representing information.Comment: 10 figures, 1 tabl

Mixture of ultracold lithium and cesium atoms in an optical dipole trap

We present the first simultaneous trapping of two different ultracold atomic species in a conservative trap. Lithium and cesium atoms are stored in an optical dipole trap formed by the focus of a CO2_2 laser. Techniques for loading both species of atoms are discussed and observations of elastic and inelastic collisions between the two species are presented. A model for sympathetic cooling of two species with strongly different mass in the presence of slow evaporation is developed. From the observed Cs-induced evaporation of Li atoms we estimate a cross section for cold elastic Li-Cs collisions.Comment: 10 pages 9 figures, submitted to Appl. Phys. The HPV cellular transactivator Brn-3a can be used to predict cervical adenocarcinoma and squamous carcinoma precancer lesions in the developed and developing worlds

    Get PDF
The cellular transactivator Brn-3a has previously been shown to be expressed at elevated levels in the cervix of women with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix (SCC) and to activate the expression of HPV E6 mRNA. In this study, we show that common and rare cervical precancer lesions, including those of adenocarcinoma (AC), which are usually difficult to diagnose using classical procedures, also expressed high levels of Brn-3a and can be diagnosed by measuring the levels of Brn-3a and E6 mRNAs

Rare charm meson decays D->Pl^+l^- and c->ul^+l^- in SM and MSSM

    Get PDF
We study the nine possible rare charm meson decays D->Pl^+l^- (P=pi,K,eta, eta') using the Heavy Meson Chiral Lagrangians and find them to be dominated by the long distance contributions. The decay D^+ -> pi^+l^+l^- with the branching ratio 1*10^(-6) is expected to have the best chances for an early experimental discovery. The short distance contribution in the five Cabibbo suppressed channels arises via the c->ul^+l^- transition; we find that this contribution is detectable only in the D->pi l^+l^- decay, where it dominates the differential spectrum at high-q^2. The general Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model can enhance the c->ul^+l^- rate by up to an order of magnitude; its effect on the D->Pl^+l^- rates is small since the c->ul^+l^- enhancement is sizable in low-q^2 region, which is inhibited in the hadronic decay.Comment: 17 page
