The recent trend of the high-performance perovskite solar cell (PSC) is based on multi-component perovskite materials. The reproducible perovskite growth techniques are crucial for acquiring mixed halide perovskite films with precise stoichiometry, desirable morphology, and low defect density

Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

The societal impact of casinos on Singapore.

Since its proposal, the casinos are widely debated on whether it will have adverse effects on Singapore society. This paper aims to address this issue by coming up with a social welfare equation derived from a survey conducted in Singapore. The paper attempts to quantify both tangible and intangible effects of casinos, using a social welfare equation. Data are then substituted into the equations and it was found that there is an increment in social welfare since the implementation of the casinos. In fact the paper concluded that social welfare is increasing at a faster rate after the casinos were opened.Bachelor of Art

Quality of life of postmenopausal women with teriparatide, denosumab and alendronate: One-year prospective study with a propensity score-matched comparison

    No full text
Background/purpose: To evaluate and compare the effects of parathyroid hormone analogues, receptor activators of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand inhibitors and bisphosphonates on the quality of life of postmenopausal women. Methods: A prospective observational study of 23 matched postmenopausal women was conducted with propensity score analysis on quality of life at one-year follow-up. Visual analogue scale for back pain and outcome scores were carried out as the quality of life or treatment adherence measurements. Results: Teriparatide use was associated with significant improvements in visual analogue scale, EuroQol 5-level 5-dimension general health status and Osteoporosis Assessment Questionnaire physical function, whereas denosumab and alendronate groups only demonstrated improved Osteoporosis Assessment Questionnaire scores but worsened back pain. Baseline average visual analogue scale back pain predicted one-year average back pain progression (partial eta squared = 0.617, p  = 0.001). Conclusions: One-year continuous teriparatide treatment is most effective in improving quality of life outcomes in postmenopausal osteoporotic women. Baseline average visual analogue scale back pain remained the only predictive factor for one-year back pain progression

Socioeconomic Disparity in Breast Cancer Detection in Hong Kong – A High Income City: Retrospective Epidemiological Study Using the Breast Cancer Registry

<div><p>Background</p><p>It is not known whether socioeconomic disparities affect the detection of breast cancer in Asian countries where the incidence of breast cancer is a rising trend. In this study, we explore the socioeconomic profiles of women and the stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis in breast cancer patients aged 40 or over in Hong Kong.</p><p>Method</p><p>During the period 2008 to 2011, 5393 breast cancer patients registered with the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Registry. Participants and their clinicians were asked to complete standardised questionnaires including patient socio-demographics, health history and risk factors, the course of the disease, post-treatment physical discomfort and psychosocial impact, follow-up recurrence and survival status.</p><p>Results</p><p>Monthly household incomes, educational levels and the practice of regular screening are independently associated with the stage of the disease at diagnosis. Higher socioeconomic status and a higher educational level were associated with an earlier stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis. Yearly clinical examinations, ultrasound and mammographic screening every 2 to 3 years were significantly associated with the earlier detection of breast cancer.</p><p>Conclusion</p><p>There were socioeconomic disparities among Hong Kong women who were found to have breast cancer. Population-based screening policies, including raising awareness among women at risk, should be implemented.</p></div
