The relationship between field-specific knowledge and language proficiency in speaking test scores

    Get PDF
The research question of this thesis was suggested by Prof Lyle Bachman at the AAAL Annual Meeting in Atlanta, during the discussion of conference paper Testing Spoken English Ability in an Agribusiness Context presented by Dan Douglas and the present author. This paper described the developed test of ability to speak English about agriculture -- AGSPEAK, and self-evaluation instruments, theoretical background, analysis of results and considerations for the future development. The analysis of the AGSPEAK and self-assessment results suggested that there is a strong relationship between overall test performance and perceptions of ability to comprehend agriculture lectures and discuss agricultural issues. There is also evidence that learner perceptions of discourse ability is positively related to AGSPEAK comprehensibility, which suggests that AGSPEAK goes beyond measuring just linguistic competence. During the discussion of AGSPEAK and the future study of its validity Prof Bachman suggested a study of the role of field-specific knowledge and language proficiency in determining the AGSPEAK scores

The ability to assess an area for the potential of different renewable energies is governed by a wide range of technical, topographic and environmental variables. This paper discusses modelling these differing constraints for renewable energy potential and then to visualise results on an interactive map. A layered GIS is used with the UK as a location test area. The results compared different renewable energies potential for the same location in the form of kWh/m. On land it was found it is often possible to harness combined renewable energy from ground (solar, bioenergy), at altitude (wind energy) and underground (geothermal, GSHP) at the same time discovering increased multipliers of energy production and land use efficiency

Future of our Feelings: Sociological Considerations about Emotional Culture in Pandem

    Get PDF
The article is devoted to some aspects of the emotional culture of the late modern society, which will evidently undergo changes due to the new virus pandemic. The author draws on the opportunities that belong to the sociology of emotions, because emotions by their nature and function are related to overcoming of uncertainty of the future. The purpose of this essay is to review the main imperatives and contradictions of the emotional culture, identify some feelings that are a socially “sensitive” answer to the current circumstances. The future changes will probably become clearer, if we observe how the contradictions of the modern emotional culture will be resolved; for example, what development the simultaneous “emotionalization” and rationalization of social life will undergo. In the situation of crisis connected to the pandemic all the feelings will be involved, emotional norms and strategies of emotion management will be modified. The author believes that the moral individualism of modern societies will draw attention to the matters concerning social solidarity and moral guidelines, which could be viewed through the concepts of care, human sufferings and feelings that lie at their heart: anxiety and fear for other people, empathy, sympathy and compassion

Emotional Culture as Sociological Concept: On Emotional Turn in Understanding of Modern Society

    Get PDF
The sociology of emotions aspires to give a description of the emotional culture of modern societies (most notably western societies); the peculiarities of the said culture contribute to the surge of interest in emotions in knowledge and everyday life—the so called “emotional turn”. The author attempts to determine the outlines of “emotional culture” concept, show what constitutes the distinctive nature of the sociological understanding of the emotional culture, which could provide an increment of knowledge and critical re-evaluation of modern social realities. The modern studies in the field of the sociology of emotions allow to suggest that in the modern societies a neo-sentimentalist culture is forming as an unintended consequence of rationalization of all the aspects of society life, modern consumer culture, individualization, etc. The emotional culture of modernity is characterized by the combination of rational attitude to emotions and simultaneous special attention to feelings, specific expression of collective emotions, persistent search for authentic feelings. One of the striking manifestations of the emotional culture of modernity is a phenomenon of “emotional labour”, when the ability to control emotions is commercialized both in public and private sphere

The Effect of TBP-Related Factor 2 on Chromocenter Formation and Chromosome Segregation in Drosophila Melanogaster

    Get PDF
Chromosome nondisjunction in meiosis causes the gene disbalance and a number of anomalies in development and fertility. Otherwise, genetically programmed sex-ratio meiotic drive occurs in a number of species. One of the forms of eukaryotic genome organization is a chromocenter evolutionally involved in the regulation of chromosome behavior in dividing cells among insects, plants, mammals, mollusks, and even yeast. In Drosophila, TBP related factor 2 (Trf2) belongs to a conservative Tbp (TATA box-binding protein) gene family and encodes a basic transcription factor. Recent data demonstrates that a decrease in TRF2 expression can result in the abnormalities of chromatin condensation; however, no details of this process have been studied. We demonstrated that a decrease in the TRF2 expression damaged proper chromocenter structure and abolished chromatin condensation and it was a reason for the chromosome nondisjunction. We found that compact chromocenter and correct homologue pairing were abolished in flies with a lower Trf2 expression in germline and in somatic cells. We conclude that TRF2 can not only be involved in transcription activation, but also may perform structural function in pericentromeric heterochromatin organization. The possibility of TRF2 to regulate the evolutionary genetically programmed sex-ratio meiotic drive is discussed

TOXIC ELEMENTS IN LENTIL, THYME AND JUNIPER IN THE COMPOSITION OF SEMI-SMOKED SAUSAGES USING THE METHOD OF ATOMIC-ABSORPTION SPECTROMETRY WITH ATOMIZATION IN FLAME

    Get PDF
Studies have been conducted into the content of toxic elements in sprouted and unsprouted lentils, juniper fruits and thyme herb, manufactured samples of semi-smoked sausages whose formulation contained the specified ingredients. The samples were prepared for conducting the study. Measuring the mass fraction of heavy metals is based on the selective absorption of electromagnetic radiation of a certain frequency by atoms of substance in a free state. Metal mass fraction in the mineralizate of a sample of food products was calculated by the calibration dependence of absorption magnitude on mass concentration of the metal. Measurement of copper and zinc mass fractions involved an atomization technique in the air-acetylene flame, with a burner heated to a temperature of around 3000 °C; their content was determined by the magnitude of radiation resonance absorption at analytical wavelength corresponding to the examined metal. It was determined that the investigated vegetable raw materials and semi-smoked sausages did not contain toxic elements that exceeded the standard
