Local/global: amateur cinema and new forms of valorization in archival film festivals

This paper will focus on the new landscapes of valorization and access to amateur/small gauge films within the archival film festival context. Archival small gauge film festivals present themselves as something completely different from those festivals dedicated to amateur and experimental cinema in the past, mainly because their goal is to valorize assets that have been deposited in specialized archives from the 1980s onwards. This film heritage is composed not only by the products of serious amateurs, but also by home movies and experimental films. We will start from the cases of Home Movie Day, a project developed in 2002 by archivists, cura- tors and film historians in the US, Archivio Aperto in Italy, and Orphan Film Symposium, founded in 1999. Throughout the years they have become a blueprint for archival small gauge film festivals and a label to which different experiences refer: small archival film festivals; meeting activities where the broader field of ‘non-thea- trical film’ is addressed; the Home Movie Marathon, a live streaming in which amateur films from all across the world are screened, etc. Furthermore, we will focus on examples from the European context, such as Archivio Aperto and its recent developments with the Memoryscapes digital platform

Don Artemio Zanni, il prete con la macchina da presa

Nel quadro delle pratiche del cinema amatoriale dell’Italia del dopoguerra, emerge l’esperienza originale di figure come Don Artemio Zanni (1914-­1990), che operò tra il 1945 e gli anni Ottanta a Felina (nell'Appennino reggiano), in un contesto caratterizzato dall’isolamento e dal forte conflitto politico e sociale durante la Guerra fredda. Mettendo in gioco le semplici ma efficaci modalità di autorappresentazione del film di famiglia, Zanni filmò la vita quotidiana della comunità parrocchiale e di Casa Nostra (il centro di accoglienza di orfani e disagiati) concependo l’uso della cinepresa come strumento per favorire partecipazione e senso di appartenenza, e come efficace mezzo di comunicazione e promozione delle attività da lui realizzate. Alla luce del cospicuo archivio filmico che Zanni ha lasciato e delle informazioni di contesto, emerge una figura che colse nel cinema l’imprescindibile espressione di una modernità da cavalcare.Some original figures of filmmakers, including Don Artemio Zanni (1914-1990), emerge from the history of amateur filmmaking in the postwar years. Zanni was a priest in Felina (in the Apennines of Reggio Emilia), an isolated context that was permeated by the tensions of the Cold War era. By using the simple yet effective strategies of self-representation typical of the home movies mode, Zanni filmed the daily life of the parish community and Casa Nostra (the orphanage and disadvantaged centre) for almost 40 years. In these videos, the camera is conceived as a tool to foster social participation and inclusion, and as a powerful medium for the communication and promotion of his activities and projects. The essay analyses Zanni’s amateur film archive and its contextual information, revealing the figure of an amateur filmaker who conceived of cinema as an essential expression of modernity

La condizione giuridica di Rom e Sinti in Italia

Il volume rappresenta un’assoluta novità nel panorama della letteratura giuridica italiana. Si tratta, infatti, della prima opera che cerca di fornire una visione completa, aggiornata e interdisciplinare dei problemi giuridici relativi alla condizione in Italia delle persone appartenenti alla minoranza dei Rom e dei Sinti. I capitoli fanno riferimento a molteplici aspetti con ricadute di rilievo tanto per la giurisprudenza costituzionale che per quella ordinaria, ma anche per il diritto dell’UE e la giurisprudenza della Corte europea dei diritti dell’uomo. Sono così approfonditi tutti gli aspetti della condizione delle singole persone (italiane, straniere o apolidi) e dello status della minoranza in sé, le norme statali e regionali rilevanti, le prassi istituzionali e i problemi di discriminazione, le raccomandazioni e le proposte emesse da organismi internazionali. Le analisi vanno a toccare il diritto costituzionale, pubblico e regionale, il diritto amministrativo e urbanistico, il diritto penale e processuale penale, il diritto civile, il diritto del lavoro, il diritto internazionale e dell’Unione europea. Sono presenti altresì riflessioni di diritto comparato (Francia, Spagna, Ungheria, Romania, Stati dell’ex-Jugoslavia), nonché analisi empiriche sulle prassi amministrative e giudiziarie. Oltre ad analisi svolte da giuristi accademici, l’opera contiene contributi di magistrati e avvocati, ma anche di sociologi, politologi, epidemiologi, antropologi e linguisti scelti tra coloro che più si sono distinti nello studio del mondo rom e sinto. Sono altresì presenti contributi di rappresentanti di istituzioni statali italiane, della Commissione europea, del Consiglio d’Europa e dell’OSCE, nonché testimonianze di rappresentanti dell'associazionismo rom e sinto. Our article is divided into three connected sections. The first one discusses the image of the city in amateur movies, taking into account the cinematic urban archeology of home movies and operational practices of databases, Geographical Information Systems, maps, installations. We propose the notion of \u201camateur city\u201d as the synthesis of multiple, located views collected in a long period of time projected onto a map. The second section describes the Play the City app, a digital tool to map and navigate the urban space, between the past and the present, through 120 clips of amateur filmmakers. The third part deals with the idea of mapping the \u201cstoryworld\u201d of a city through the app and opens up some theoretical perspectives on film images and geo-located systems

Effects of cryopreservation and freeze-drying on proteases enzymatic activity of entomopathogenic strains of Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin.

Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae are fungal species known for their entomopathogenic activity; they represent an important alternative to chemical control of many pest insects and appropriate preservation methods are thus necessary to maintain their properties over time. In the present study the effects of cryopreservation and freeze­drying were investigated on virulence determinants such as proteases and specifically on subtilisin-type Pr 1 and Pr 2 that seem to play a predominant role in insect fungal penetration. Three Metharizium anisopliae strains (M 13/ I05, M 13/ I12 and M 13/ I33) and three Beauveria bassiana strains (B 13/ I03, B 13/ I57 and B 13/ I63) were tested. Data obtained from our experiments show that the decrease of Pr 1 and Pr 2 enzymatic activity in B. bassiana and M. anisopliae strains 7 months after storage does not affect their entomopathogenic ability against larvae of Tenebrio molitor compared to the fresh cultures before storage. The role of Pr 1 and Pr 2 as predominant factors in the entomopathogenicity of both fungal species is discussed. No significant differences were found in any strain tested for morphological features using both preservation methods
