Polarization of interacting bosons with spin
We demonstrate rigorously that in the absence of explicit spin-dependent
forces one of the ground states of interacting bosons with spin is always fully
polarized -- however complicated the many-body interaction potential might be.
Depending on the particle spin, the polarized ground state will generally be
degenerate with other states, but one can specify the exact degeneracy. For T>0
the magnetization and susceptibility necessarily exceed that of a pure
paramagnet. These results are relevant to recent experiments exploring the
relation between triplet superconductivity and ferromagnetism, and the
Bose-Einstein condensation of atoms with spin. They eliminate the possibility,
raised in some theoretical speculations, that the ground state or positive
temperature state might be antiferromagnetic.Comment: v4: as published in PR

Universality properties of the stationary states in the one-dimensional coagulation-diffusion model with external particle input
We investigate with the help of analytical and numerical methods the reaction
A+A->A on a one-dimensional lattice opened at one end and with an input of
particles at the other end. We show that if the diffusion rates to the left and
to the right are equal, for large x, the particle concentration c(x) behaves
like As/x (x measures the distance to the input end). If the diffusion rate in
the direction pointing away from the source is larger than the one
corresponding to the opposite direction the particle concentration behaves like
Aa/sqrt(x). The constants As and Aa are independent of the input and the two
coagulation rates. The universality of Aa comes as a surprise since in the

Experimentally realizable characterizations of continuous variable Gaussian states
Measures of entanglement, fidelity and purity are basic yardsticks in quantum
information processing. We propose how to implement these measures using linear
devices and homodyne detectors for continuous variable Gaussian states. In
particular, the test of entanglement becomes simple with some prior knowledge

Impact of sudden stratospheric warmings on United Kingdom mortality
Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) during boreal winter are one of the main drivers of subâseasonal climate variability in the Northern Hemisphere. Although the impact of SSW events on surface climate and climate extremes has been clearly demonstrated, the impact of the resulting climate anomalies on society has not been so widely considered. In the United Kingdom (UK), SSWs are associated with cold weather, which is linked to significant increases in mortality. This study demonstrates, for the first time, that SSWs are linked to increases in mortality in the UK. A distributed lag nonlinear model and standard parameter settings from the literature is used to construct a daily time series of UK deaths attributable to cold weather between 1991 and 2018. Weekly mortality associated with SSWs is diagnosed using a superposed epoch analysis of attributed mortality for the 15 SSW events in this period. SSW associated mortality peaks between 3 and 5âweeks after SSW central date and leads to, on average, 620 additional deaths in the same period. Given that the impacts of SSWs can be skilfully predicted on subâseasonal timescales, this suggests that health and social care systems could derive substantial benefit from subâseasonal forecasts during SSWs
