Propfan noise propagation

The unconventional supersonic tip speed of advanced propellers has led to uncertainties about Propfan's noise acceptability and compliance with Federal Aviation Noise Regulation (FAR 36). Overhead flight testing of the Propfan with an SR-7L blade during 1989's Propfan Test Assessment (PTA) Program have shown unexpectedly high far-field sound pressure levels. This study here attempts to provide insights into the acoustics of a single-rotating propeller (SRP) with supersonic tip speed. At the same time, the role of the atmosphere in shaping the far-field noise characteristics is investigated

Phonon emission and arrival times of electrons from a single-electron source

In recent charge-pump experiments, single electrons are injected into quantum Hall edge channels at energies significantly above the Fermi level. We consider here the relaxation of these hot edge-channel electrons through longitudinal-optical-phonon emission. Our results show that the probability for an electron in the outermost edge channel to emit one or more phonons en route to a detector some microns distant along the edge channel suffers a double-exponential suppression with increasing magnetic field. This explains recent experimental observations. We also describe how the shape of the arrival-time distribution of electrons at the detector reflects the velocities of the electronic states post phonon emission. We show how this can give rise to pronounced oscillations in the arrival-time-distribution width as a function of magnetic field or electron energy

An Arbitrary Aesthetic: Cultural Reproduction and Hegemonic Canonical Formations in the Western Theatrical Academy

Theatre as an artistic practice has often been celebrated as an art of and for the people, being a modality that in theory the common person has access to learn, explore and experience. In recent years I have become preoccupied with the growing rarification and privileging of this art form, particularly in how it is cognized and taught in the academic world. As such, I set out to investigate the mechanisms at work at levels structural, artistic, and personal that determine how theatre is taught and understood within the western academy. This thesis seeks to examine and unpack the perceived “correct” way to do and teach theatre as posited by the western academic tradition, and the impact this has on its students. I first unpack Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of Cultural Reproduction and Symbolic Violence and their effect on how theatre is understood and produced. I trace the history of theatre in the western academy and the current state of theatre programs and curriculum. I then draw on interviews with individuals who have studied theatre at the undergraduate level to analyze their experience of theatrical pedagogy. In turn, I examine and theorize pedagogical alternatives to encourage a more accessible and individualized approach to performance pedagogy. The result of this thesis is an unpacking of the formations and systems that make up undergraduate theatre performance studies and an analysis of the potentially harmful effects these systems have on the understanding of undergraduate students

The pacifist Jesus and the violent Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew

The Gospel of Matthew presents two starkly different depictions of Jesus. The earthly Jesus of the past is a pacifist who teaches non-violence, compassion, non-retaliation, forgiveness and love of enemies, and he lives his life according to these ideals. The other Jesus is the eschatological figure of judgement who is the antithesis of the earthly Jesus. This Jesus is violent, merciless and vengeful in his treatment of the wicked. The evangelist constructed and promoted this terrible figure of judgement to assist his readers to cope with certain situations of crisis, but in doing so he paid a steep christological price by presenting Jesus in contradictory terms
