Opportunities And Impacts Of Additive Manufacturing: A Literature Review

    Get PDF
Additive manufacturing industry has experienced tremendous growth in the last decade. This paper aims to address the lack of insights and systematic research by investigating opportunity and impact of potential economic benefits of AM. Our results show that the number of publications in the AM research has increased exponentially since 2009. The papers have been identified into five themes: applications, country, opportunity, economics and social. Our results show that there are an increasing number of papers that investigate economic and social benefits of AM

Knowledge Management in Information Technology Help Desk:Past, Present and Future

    Get PDF
Information technology has changed the way organizations function. This resulted in the reliance of help desks to deal with information technology related areas such as hardware, software, and telecommunication. Besides, the adoption of business process reengineering and downsizing have led to the shrinkage of the size of help desk. The shorter information technology product life cycle has worsened the situation by increasing the already sizeable help desk’s user base. Consequently, the help desk has to cover more information technology products and resolute more technical enquiries with less staff. Thus, the outcome is clear that users have to wait comparably longer before help desk staff is available to offer assistance. This paper describes the contribution of knowledge management in retaining knowledge and solving “knowledge leaking” problem. The research presents the development of user selfhelp knowledge management system to re-distribute incoming enquiries so that simple and routine technical enquiries can be resolved without help desk intervention

A Study of Factors Influencing Green IT Practices, Buying and Subscription Behaviours of Computer and Mobile Devices, and Streaming Services

The pressure of environmental sustainability and the introduction of strict transnational and local environment laws, regulations and targets have catalysed the emergency of Green IT. On individual level, Green IT can be achieved through environmentally responsible behaviour to purchase, use and disposal of products and services without damaging the environment. This research aims to investigate the Green IT behaviour of young consumers including their day-to-day Green IT practices, buying behaviour of mobile and computer devices and subscription behaviour of streaming services. The findings show that: 1) Understanding of Green IT practices (specific knowledge) has a positive influence on PBC, 2) Consumer’s PBC has a positive influence on Green IT behaviour and 3) The communication strategy has a positive influence on PBC. Research results also show that young consumers’ buying and subscribing decision are strongly influenced by factors such as appearance, specification, features, content and price than Green IT factors. Clinical Outcomes of a Hospital-Based Teleophthalmology Service: What Happens to Patients in a Virtual Clinic?

PURPOSE: Demographic changes as well as increasing referral rates from national screening services put pressure on available ophthalmologic resources in the United Kingdom. To improve resource allocation, virtual medical retina clinics were introduced in 2016 in Moorfields Eye Hospital, South Division. The scope of this work was to assess clinical outcomes of patients followed up in a virtual clinic setting. DESIGN: Retrospective database study. PARTICIPANTS: Patients booked for a consecutive appointment in our virtual medical retina clinic. METHODS: Seven hundred twenty-eight patients booked for their second virtual clinic appointment in a tertiary eye care referral center between November 2016 and July 2018 were identified retrospectively from our electronic health records and patient administration systems. Information about disease grade and clinical and visual outcomes was assessed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Clinical outcome of the virtual clinic visit, including virtual follow-up, urgent referral to face-to-face clinic, or discharge. RESULTS: Seven hundred twelve of 728 patients received a clinical outcome. Four hundred ninety-seven patients (70%) were eligible for further virtual follow-up after the second virtual clinic visit, whereas 15% each (107 and 108 patients) were either discharged or referred to a face-to-face clinic. In total, 661 patients attended their appointments in person and were reviewed by trained staff. Seventeen patients were referred for urgent treatment and 8 patients were not suitable for virtual follow-up. In 542 (82%) of all patients, diabetic retinopathy was the most common diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: This study reports clinical outcomes of a virtual model of care for medical retina clinics that imply safety of patient care in this clinic setting. This clinic format optimizes the use of already available resources and increases the skills of our existing workforce while maintaining high-quality clinical standards

An Ontology-Based Collaborative Interorganizational Knowledge Management Network

    Get PDF
Web contents can be represented in a structural form by a finite list of vocabularies and their relationships using ontologies. The concept of ontology and its related mediation methods is capable of enhancing the collaboration among Knowledge Management (KM) approaches that only focus on managing organizational knowledge. Those KM approaches are developed in accordance with organizational KM strategies and business requirements without the concern of system interoperation. In this research, an ontology-based collaborative inter-organizational KM network is proposed to provide a platform for organizations to access and retrieve inter-organizational knowledge in a similar domain

Magnetic Quantum Dot: A Magnetic Transmission Barrier and Resonator

We study the ballistic edge-channel transport in quantum wires with a magnetic quantum dot, which is formed by two different magnetic fields B^* and B_0 inside and outside the dot, respectively. We find that the electron states located near the dot and the scattering of edge channels by the dot strongly depend on whether B^* is parallel or antiparallel to B_0. For parallel fields, two-terminal conductance as a function of channel energy is quantized except for resonances, while, for antiparallel fields, it is not quantized and all channels can be completely reflected in some energy ranges. All these features are attributed to the characteristic magnetic confinements caused by nonuniform fields.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Physical Review Letter

Health Economic and Safety Considerations for Artificial Intelligence Applications in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening

    Get PDF
Systematic screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) has been widely recommended for early detection in patients with diabetes to address preventable vision loss. However, substantial manpower and financial resources are required to deploy opportunistic screening and transition to systematic DR screening programs. The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies may improve access and reduce the financial burden for DR screening while maintaining comparable or enhanced clinical effectiveness. To deploy an AI-based DR screening program in a real-world setting, it is imperative that health economic assessment (HEA) and patient safety analyses are conducted to guide appropriate allocation of resources and design safe, reliable systems. Few studies published to date include these considerations when integrating AI-based solutions into DR screening programs. In this article, we provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art of AI technology (focusing on deep learning systems), followed by an appraisal of existing literature on the applications of AI in ophthalmology. We also discuss practical considerations that drive the development of a successful DR screening program, such as the implications of false-positive or false-negative results and image gradeability. Finally, we examine different plausible methods for HEA and safety analyses that can be used to assess concerns regarding AI-based screening
