    Detection of the Circumstellar Disk Associated with 2MASS J0820-8003 in the eta Cha Cluster

    The Nearby Young Moving Groups (NYMGs) of stars are ideal for the study of evolution circumstellar disks in which planets may form because their ages range from a few Myr to about 100 Myr, about the same as the interval over which planets are thought to form. Their stars are distributed over large regions of the sky. Hence, the Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) which scanned the entire sky in four bands from 3.4 to 22.1 mu provides a database well-suited for the study of members of the NYMGs, particularly those identified after the eras of the IRAS and Spitzer observatories. We report our study of the stars in the epsilon and eta Cha, TW Hya, beta Pic, Tuc-Hor, and AB Dor NYMGs. The WISE Preliminary Release Source Catalog, which covers 57% of the sky, contains data for 64% of the stars in our search lists. WISE detected the 11.6 and 22.1 mu emission of all the previously known disks except for the coldest one, AU Mic. WISE detected no disks in the Tuc-Hor and AB Dor groups, the two oldest in our sample; the frequency of disks detected by WISE decreases rapidly with age of the group. WISE detected a circumstellar disk associated with 2M J0820-8003, a pre-main sequence star with episodic accretion in the ~ 6 Myr old eta Cha cluster. The inner radius of the disk extends close to the star, ~0.02 AU and its luminosity is about a tenth that of the star.     Don't Panic! Closed String Tachyons in ALE Spacetimes

    We consider closed string tachyons localized at the fixed points of noncompact nonsupersymmetric orbifolds. We argue that tachyon condensation drives these orbifolds to flat space or supersymmetric ALE spaces. The decay proceeds via an expanding shell of dilaton gradients and curvature which interpolates between two regions of distinct angular geometry. The string coupling remains weak throughout. For small tachyon VEVs, evidence comes from quiver theories on D-branes probes, in which deformations by twisted couplings smoothly connect non-supersymmetric orbifolds to supersymmetric orbifolds of reduced order. For large tachyon VEVs, evidence comes from worldsheet RG flow and spacetime gravity. For \IC^2/\IZ_n, we exhibit infinite sequences of transitions producing SUSY ALE spaces via twisted closed string condensation from non-supersymmetric ALE spaces. In a TT-dual description this provides a mechanism for creating NS5-branes via {\it closed} string tachyon condensation similar to the creation of D-branes via {\it open} string tachyon condensation.     Monodromy in the CMB: Gravity Waves and String Inflation

    We present a simple mechanism for obtaining large-field inflation, and hence a gravitational wave signature, from string theory compactified on twisted tori. For Nil manifolds, we obtain a leading inflationary potential proportional to phi^(2/3) in terms of the canonically normalized field phi, yielding predictions for the tilt of the power spectrum and the tensor-to-scalar ratio, ns0.98n_s\approx 0.98 and r0.04r\approx 0.04 with 60 e-foldings of inflation; we note also the possibility of a variant with a candidate inflaton potential proportional to phi^(2/5). The basic mechanism involved in extending the field range -- monodromy in D-branes as they move in circles on the manifold -- arises in a more general class of compactifications, though our methods for controlling the corrections to the slow-roll parameters require additional symmetries.Comment: 43 pages, latex. 4 figure

    Introduction and Expression of a Rabbit β-globin Gene in Mouse Fibroblasts

    The cloned chromosomal rabbit ß-globin gene has been introduced into mouse fibroblasts by DNA-mediated gene transfer (transformation). In this report, we examine the expression of the rabbit gene in six independent transformants that contain from 1 to 20 copies of the cloned globin gene. Rabbit globin transcripts were detected in two of these transformants at steady-state concentrations of 5 and 2 copies per cell. The globin transcripts from one cell line are polyadenylylated and migrate as 9S RNA on methylmercury gels. These transcripts reflect correct processing of the two intervening sequences but lack 48 ± 5 nucleotides present at the 5' terminus of rabbit erythrocyte globin mRNA

    The Scaling of the No Scale Potential and de Sitter Model Building

    We propose a variant of the KKLT (A)dS flux vacuum construction which does not require an antibrane to source the volume modulus. The strategy is to find nonzero local minima of the no-scale potential in the complex structure and dilaton directions in moduli space. The corresponding no-scale potential expanded about this point sources the volume modulus in the same way as does the antibrane of the KKLT construction.     A New Handle on de Sitter Compactifications

    We construct a large new class of de Sitter (and anti de Sitter) vacua of critical string theory from flux compactifications on products of Riemann surfaces. In the construction, the leading effects stabilizing the moduli are perturbative.     On the Matrix Description of Calabi-Yau Compactifications

    We point out that the matrix description of M-theory compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds is in many respects simpler than the matrix description of a T6T^6 compactification. This is largely because of the differences between D6 branes wrapped on Calabi-Yau threefolds and D6 branes wrapped on six-tori.
