Design optimization of high-performance electrodynamic actuators for use in a cryogenically cooled telescope
An analysis and optimization of a mirror-actuator system for large excursion/high-frequency chopping is developed. The results of this analysis, combined with laboratory measurements of a prototype actuator operating at cryogenic temperatures, allow performance predictions to be made for a real system utilizing this technology
Rural-urban migration in d-dimensional lattices
The rural-urban migration phenomenon is analyzed by using an agent-based
computational model. Agents are placed on lattices which dimensions varying
from d=2 up to d=7. The localization of the agents in the lattice define their
social neighborhood (rural or urban) not being related to their spatial
distribution. The effect of the dimension of lattice is studied by analyzing
the variation of the main parameters that characterizes the migratory process.
The dynamics displays strong effects even for around one million of sites, in
higher dimensions (d=6, 7).Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, to be published in International Journal of

In Vivo Study Of Novel Nanocomposite For Prostate Cancer Treatment
Because of high occurrence of side effects of conventional anticancer drugs, new therapies have been widely studied, such as the use of non-usual molecules and the association with nanomaterials. In this context, sildenafil is a molecule that has been lately considered as a co-adjuvant in cancer therapy because it inhibits an enzyme with a potential role in tumor progression, phosphodiesterase-5. Taking into account the combination of nanoparticles and sildenafil, we produced systems based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles, Pluronic F-127 and sildenafil as the main therapy for prostate cancer.61
In Vivo Nanotoxicology Of Hybrid Systems Based On Copolymer/silica/anticancer Drug
One of the major problems in cancer therapies is the high occurrence of side effects intrinsic of anticancer drugs. Doxorrubicin is a conventional anticancer molecule used to treat a wide range of cancer, such as breast, ovarian and prostate. However, its use is associated with a number of side effects like multidrug resistance and cardiotoxicity. The association with nanomaterials has been considered in the past decade to overcome the high toxicity of these drugs. In this context, mesoporous silica nanoparticles are great candidates to be used as carriers once they are very biocompatible. Taking into account the combination of nanoparticles and doxorrubicin, we treated rats with chemically induced prostate cancer with systems based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles and a thermoreversible block copolymer (Pluronic F-127) containing doxorrubicin. Preliminary results show a possible improvement in tumor conditions proportional to the concentration of the nanoparticles, opening a perspective to use mesoporous silica nanoparticles as carrier for doxorrubicin in prostate cancer treatment.61

The prevalence and clinical forms of Trypanosoma cruzi were evaluated among blood donor candidates attended at a general hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from January 1997 to April 1999. The investigation was done by means of the indirect hemagglutination test and was confirmed via ELISA. Data were collected from clinical examinations, conventional electrocardiogram, chest radiography and echocar-diography. The results showed that despite Trypanosoma cruzi prevalence of 1.17% (128 patients), mainly in males aged 40 years or over, 70.8% of these patients, mainly males aged 19 to 39 years, demonstrated abnormalities that allowed the diagnosis of cardiopathy and/or esophagopathy. This once again corroborates the importance of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in urban centers
Genetic evaluation for productive traits in endangered Portuguese Malhado de Alcobaça pig
Malhado de Alcobaça (MA) is a swine breed from center west Portugal, recognized in 2003. Herdbook (LGMA)
has information of >17,000 animals (1985-2022). It´s a very endangered breed with only 244 sows, 18 boars and 12
breeders. Within the scope of MA’s genetic conservation plan, for genetic evaluation, genetic parameters and fixed
effects were estimated for birth weight (PN), for adjusted weight at 30 d (P30) and at 90 d (P90). Pedigree records
(n=16,883) and weighing records (nPN=9,198; nP30=5,799; nP90=2,429) from LGMA of 362 litters were compiled.
Genetic parameters and fixed effects, genetic values and precisions were predicted for PN, P30 and P90, through
BLUP, with a mixed model including fixed effects of breeder × year of birth, season of birth, sex, age of mother (linear
/ quadratic effect) and as random effects genetic value of animal, maternal genetic effect and permanent environmental
effect of litter. Fixed effects of prolificacy and number of weaned piglets were included as covariates, respectively, in
PN and P30/P90 analyses. Mean values for PN 1.32±0.28 kg, 7.16±1.6 kg P30 and 34.1±6.4 kg P90 were recorded.
For PN, P30 and P90, respectively, a heritability for direct effects of 0.170±0.156, 0.145±0.161 and 0.293±0.175;
a maternal heritability of 0.084±0.109, 0.124±0.173 and 0.250±0.186 and a genetic correlation between direct and
maternal effects of -0.344, -0.524 and -0.174 was estimated. Permanent environmental effect of litter was 0.395±0.056
PN, 0.403±0.086 P30 and 0.129±0.047 P90. In fixed effects, a superiority was observed for males of +0.031 kg PN,
+0.046 kg P30 and +0.201 P90. Breeder × year effect showed maximum differences of 0.93, 5.21 and 19.25 kg for
PN, P30 and P90, respectively, with Spring being the best season of birth. Sow age at farrowing had a quadratic effect
for all traits. For each increase of 1 piglet in prolificacy, PN, P30 and P90 were reduced by 4, 7 and 58 g, respectively.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
