Supersonic quasi-particles dynamics in organic semiconductors

    Get PDF
AbstractWe investigate the dynamics of charge-carriers schemes on high external electric fields in organic semiconductors. Specifically, the critical field strength needed for the transition from subsonic to supersonic regime was determined for solitons and polarons in conjugated polymers, for both trans- and cis-symmetry. Also, the collision between quasi-particles and impurities, at supersonic regime, is investigated. For this purpose it is used a modified Su–Schrieffer–Heeger hamiltonian model in the scope of an Ehrenfest molecular dynamics. The results provide useful information regarding the behavior of the conductivity of conducting polymers measured for different electric fields and bearing different types of impurities

Background: Otitis is a severe inflammation of the skin of the auditory canal which can impact animals of all ages. In sheep, this disease can occur in isolated cases or in the entire flock. Laser photobiomodulation can be used in combination with medication or as single therapy and the effects are analgesia, modulation of the inflammatory process, edema reduction, tissue restoration and stimulation of local microcirculation. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy stands out as a promising alternative to antimicrobial drugs for the treatment of localized infections. This study aimed to report the use of laser phototherapies on a sheep with bacterial otitis.Case: A case of bacterial otitis in a 4-year-old sheep, Dorper, was treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the State University of Santa Cruz. In the anamnesis, the owner reported that the patient presented crusts in the auricular pavilions, and had been medicated with oxytetracycline 20%, administered intramuscularly, for two days and the crusts cleaned with iodine 10%, but the animal did not present clinical improvement. On physical examination, the animal presented constant head swaying, edema of the ears, otalgia, enlarged parotid lymph nodes and ear wounds. No ear discharge was observed, and the initial diagnosis was aural hematoma. The treatment prescribed was laser photobiomodulation for three consecutive days. The lesions were irradiated with a diode laser with a power of 0.1 W, irradiance of 3.5 W/cm2, continuous emission, spot area of 0.028 cm2, wavelength of 808 nm, energy of 4J/point, and fluency/point of 142.8J/cm2, with seven points on the external surface and four points on the internal surface of both ears. Two points were also targeted on the parotid lymph nodes with infrared laser (λ = 808 nm), with energy of 2J/point. On the fourth day of hospitalization, there was a reduction in lesions, decreased edema and absence of pain and on the sixth day of hospitalization, the patient presented mucopurulent otorrhea. The material from the auricular pavilions was collected for cytological examination, confirming the clinical diagnosis of bacterial otitis. Two sessions of Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) were performed with an interval of 48 hours, with application of 0.01 % methylene blue, pre-irradiation time of five minutes and irradiation with diode laser with a power of 0.1 W, 660 nm wavelength and 9J/point energy. On the 10 th day after the start of the treatment, there was no pain, healing of ear wounds, and no otorrhea. An additional photobiomodulation session was performed on the unhealed wounds in the auditory canal with red laser (λ = 660nm), on 5 points with an energy of 1J/point. On the 15th day, the left ear was healed and the right ear presented otorrhea, and a further session of aPDT was performed. On the 17th day after starting treatment there was no secretion and all lesions were healed. The patient was subsequently monitored for one month, showing no change or relapse.Discussion: Laser photobiomodulation treatment and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy were efficient in treating bacterial otitis without the use of antibiotics, promoting clinical improvement and patient well-being, making it an alternative to conventional treatment. After searches on the Pubmed, Scielo and Escopus databases using photobiomodulation and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in sheep otitis as descriptors, this is believed to be the first report on the use of laser phototherapy in sheep otitis. Further studies are needed to establish the dosimetry and frequency of the sessions, as, besides considering animal well-being, this species is an excellent model for human experimentation

CONSTRUÇÃO IDENTITÁRIA EM ALTERIDADE: ANÁLISE DIALÓGICA DE TOY STORY 4

    Get PDF

Cutaneous metastases of visceral neoplasms are rare conditions, and urothelial or transitional cell carcinomas are responsible for less than 1% of cases. We report the case of a 50-year-old male patient who progressively developed multiple cutaneous nodules on his head, abdomen, axilla, and groin, some with ulceration. Skin biopsy and immunohistochemistry were consistent with cutaneous metastasis of urothelial carcinoma. Computed tomography scan revealed generalized metastasis in internal organs. In this rare case, cutaneous metastases were the presenting sign of the disease and, as reported, a sign of bad prognosis.

Oral rehabilitation of atrophic maxillae features high complexity, for which there are several therapeutic modalities reported on scientific literature. Zygomatic implant placement is a viable option that features low morbidity and allows immediate prosthetic loading. The purpose of the present study was to determine the methodological quality of systematic reviews that assessed the effectiveness of zygomatic implants placed in atrophic maxillae. Searches were conducted on Medline via Pubmed, LILACS, Dare Cochrane, Scopus, and Sigle via Open Grey up to June 2019. Seven systematic reviews were eligible for Overview and comprised a total of 2313 patients, 4812 zygomatic implants, and a 96,72% success rate. Common surgical complications, in decreasing order, were: maxillary sinusitis, peri-implant mucositis, prosthetic fracture, and infections. Methodological quality was assessed using the AMSTAR 2 tool, which revealed that six systematic reviews showed critically low methodological quality and one review was assessed as of low methodological quality. Zygomatic implants seem to be an adequate option for atrophic maxilla rehabilitation, however, new studies with a higher methodological rigor are needed to provide more reliable results to professionals and patients undergoing this modality of oral rehabilitation

The discovery of antimicrobials revolutionized the treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, as they are drugs that contribute to reducing morbidity and mortality rates associated with infectious diseases (JANEBRO, et al., 2008). However, the irrational use of antimicrobial drugs represents one of the main concerns worldwide, since the misuse of these drugs accelerates the natural process of bacteria resistance to antibiotics (ZIMERMAN, 2010). In view of all these problems, the objective of this study was to evaluate the profile of resistance of bacteria identified in the urine culture of neonates who are hospitalized, based on the records of the Laboratory of Clinical Analysis of a hospital in the lakes region from Rio de Janeiro. To do so, we used the following methodologies: (i) literature review for contextualization of the problem and basis for discussion; (ii) and monitoring of a descriptive observational study that had as instrument the reports of records containing results of urine culture and antibiogram of neonatal patients, referring to the period from January 2020 to September 2021. The results showed a higher incidence of Escherichia coli (44% - 2020; 56% - 2021) among the microorganisms isolated in the analyzed urine cultures, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (14% - 2020; 28% - 2021). Antimicrobials from the β-lactam group caused high bacterial resistance, among the strains of different microorganisms analyzed, increasingly indicating the need for the replacement of these drugs in the clinic, in order to choose a better therapy for the patient. As in any infectious pathology, to establish appropriate prevention and treatment of community-acquired urinary tract infections, effective and continuous research is needed, with the goal of defining in detail the etiology and profile of bacterial resistance in regional, national, and international standards. It is hoped that these new data profiling the level of resistance in which microorganisms isolated from neonatal patients admitted under hospital regimen are found will be of great value to the academic community and to health professionals, providing users with increasingly accurate and quality treatment. The discovery of antimicrobials revolutionized the treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, as they are drugs that contribute to reducing morbidity and mortality rates associated with infectious diseases (JANEBRO, et al., 2008).
