    Using Bad Learners to find Good Configurations

    Finding the optimally performing configuration of a software system for a given setting is often challenging. Recent approaches address this challenge by learning performance models based on a sample set of configurations. However, building an accurate performance model can be very expensive (and is often infeasible in practice). The central insight of this paper is that exact performance values (e.g. the response time of a software system) are not required to rank configurations and to identify the optimal one. As shown by our experiments, models that are cheap to learn but inaccurate (with respect to the difference between actual and predicted performance) can still be used rank configurations and hence find the optimal configuration. This novel \emph{rank-based approach} allows us to significantly reduce the cost (in terms of number of measurements of sample configuration) as well as the time required to build models. We evaluate our approach with 21 scenarios based on 9 software systems and demonstrate that our approach is beneficial in 16 scenarios; for the remaining 5 scenarios, an accurate model can be built by using very few samples anyway, without the need for a rank-based approach.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure

    We study sequential collusion-resistant fingerprinting, where the fingerprinting code is generated in advance but accusations may be made between rounds, and show that in this setting both the dynamic Tardos scheme and schemes building upon Wald's sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) are asymptotically optimal. We further compare these two approaches to sequential fingerprinting, highlighting differences between the two schemes. Based on these differences, we argue that Wald's scheme should in general be preferred over the dynamic Tardos scheme, even though both schemes have their merits. As a side result, we derive an optimal sequential group testing method for the classical model, which can easily be generalized to different group testing models.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Interannual variability of the stratospheric wave driving during northern winter

    The strength of the stratospheric wave driving during northern winter is often quantified by the January–February mean poleward eddy heat flux at 100 hPa, averaged over 40°–80° N (or a similar area and period). Despite the dynamical and chemical relevance of the wave driving, the causes for its variability are still not well understood. In this study, ERA-40 reanalysis data for the period 1979–2002 are used to examine several factors that significantly affect the interannual variability of the wave driving. The total poleward heat flux at 100 hPa is poorly correlated with that in the troposphere, suggesting a decoupling between 100 hPa and the troposphere. However, the individual zonal wave-1 and wave-2 contributions to the wave driving at 100 hPa do exhibit a significant coupling with the troposphere, predominantly their stationary components. The stationary wave-1 contribution to the total wave driving significantly depends on the latitude of the stationary wave-1 source in the troposphere. The results suggest that this dependence is associated with the varying ability of stationary wave-1 activity to enter the tropospheric waveguide at mid-latitudes. The wave driving anomalies are separated into three parts: one part due to anomalies in the zonal correlation coefficient between the eddy temperature and eddy meridional wind, another part due to anomalies in the zonal eddy temperature amplitude, and a third part due to anomalies in the zonal eddy meridional wind amplitude. It is found that year-to-year variability in the zonal correlation coefficient between the eddy temperature and the eddy meridional wind is the most dominant factor in explaining the year-to-year variability of the poleward eddy heat flux

    Stochastic Model of Protein–Protein Interaction: Why Signaling Proteins Need to Be Colocalized

    Colocalization of proteins that are part of the same signal transduction pathway via compartmentalization, scaffold, or anchor proteins is an essential aspect of the signal transduction system in eukaryotic cells. If interaction must occur via free diffusion, then the spatial separation between the sources of the two interacting proteins and their degradation rates become primary determinants of the time required for interaction. To understand the role of such colocalization, we create a mathematical model of the diffusion based protein–protein interaction process. We assume that mRNAs, which serve as the sources of these proteins, are located at different positions in the cytoplasm. For large cells such as Drosophila oocytes we show that if the source mRNAs were at random locations in the cell rather than colocalized, the average rate of interactions would be extremely small, which suggests that localization is needed to facilitate protein interactions and not just to prevent cross-talk between different signaling modules

    Validating a Device for Whiplash Motion Simulation in a Porcine Model

    Whiplash injury is a common outcome following minor automobile collisions. One theorizedmechanism for whiplash injury is that the rapid head and neck motions induced by a collision caninjure nerve cells in the dorsal root ganglia through pressure gradients developed in the spinalcanal and surrounding tissues. This injury mechanism has previously been studied in humancadaver and porcine models. However, the whiplash motion simulation methods in the latterstudies lacked the control necessary to explore the independent effects of head rotation andretraction on the measured spinal pressures. This project aimed to address the limitations ofprevious porcine whiplash studies by developing and validating a new whiplash motion simulationdevice to enable further study of this injury mechanism. The new proposed device consists of twoservomotors which can be programmed to precisely actuate a headplate through mechanicallinkages. For the current study, an inert surrogate model was used for preliminary testing of thedevice using a whiplash motion profile from previous porcine studies. The time scale of the motionprofile was adjusted to incrementally increase severity. The positional accuracy and repeatabilityof the device was assessed through marker tracking of the headplate and logging of the motorencoder positions. Angular rates and linear accelerations of the plate were also measured. Testingdemonstrated the strengths of the proposed device in accurately and repeatably replicatingprogrammed motion profiles. Some design modifications can potentially enable simulatingwhiplash motion severities commensurate with previous porcine whiplash studies. With futuretesting using this device, our understanding of the pressure-induced whiplash injury mechanismcan be improved, which can inform effective treatments and preventative measures for whiplashinjury
