On a generalized Kirchhoff equation with sublinear nonlinearities

In this paper we consider a generalized Kirchhoff? equation in a bounded domain under the effect of a sublinear nonlinearity. Under suitable assumptions on the data of the problem we show that, with a simple change of variable, the equation can be reduced to a classical semilinear equation and then studied with standard tools.Comment: 13 page

Existence results of positive solutions for Kirchhoff type equations via bifurcation methods

In this paper we address the following Kirchhoff type problem \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -\Delta(g(|\nabla u|_2^2) u + u^r) = a u + b u^p& \mbox{in}~\Omega, u>0& \mbox{in}~\Omega, u= 0& \mbox{on}~\partial\Omega, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} in a bounded and smooth domain $\Omega$ in ${\rm I}\hskip -0.85mm{\rm R}$. By using change of variables and bifurcation methods, we show, under suitable conditions on the parameters $a,b,p,r$ and the nonlinearity $g$, the existence of positive solutions.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur

Boron-10 Lined Proportional Counter Wall Effects

The Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Safeguards (NA-241) is supporting the project 'Coincidence Counting With Boron-Based Alternative Neutron Detection Technology' at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for development of an alternative neutron coincidence counter. The goal of this project is to design, build and demonstrate a boron-lined proportional tube based system in the configuration of a coincidence counter. This report provides information about how variations in proportional counter radius and gas pressure in a typical coincident counter design might affect the observed signal from boron-lined tubes. A discussion comparing tubes to parallel plate counters is also included

Medical Radioisotope Data Survey: 2002 Preliminary Results

A limited, but accurate amount of detailed information about the radioactive isotopes used in the U.S. for medical procedures was collected from a local hospital and from a recent report on the U.S. Radiopharmaceutical Markets. These data included the total number of procedures, the specific types of procedures, the specific radioisotopes used in these procedures, and the dosage administered per procedure. The information from these sources was compiled, assessed, pruned, and then merged into a single, comprehensive and consistent set of results presented in this report. (PIET-43471-TM-197

Drill string gas data

Data and supporting documentation were compiled and analyzed for 26 cases of gas grab samples taken during waste-tank core sampling activities between September 1, 1995 and December 31, 1997. These cases were tested against specific criteria to reduce uncertainties associated with in-tank sampling location and conditions. Of the 26 possible cases, 16 qualified as drill-string grab samples most likely to represent recently released waste gases. The data from these 16 ``confirmed`` cases were adjusted to remove non-waste gas contributions from core-sampling activities (argon or nitrogen purge), the atmospheric background, and laboratory sampler preparation (helium). The procedure for subtracting atmospheric, laboratory, and argon purge gases was unambiguous. No reliable method for determining the exact amount of nitrogen purge gas was established. Thus, the final set of ``Adjusted`` drill string gas data for the 6 nitrogen-purged cases had a greater degree of uncertainty than the final results for the 10 argon-purged cases. Including the appropriate amounts of uncertainty, this final set of data was added to the set of high-quality results from the Retained Gas Sampler (RGS), and good agreement was found for the N{sub 2}, H{sub 2}, and N{sub 2}O mole fractions sampled from common tanks. These results indicate that under favorable sampling conditions, Drill-String (DS) grab samples can provide reasonably accurate information about the dominant species of released gas. One conclusion from this set of total gas data is that the distribution of the H{sub 2} mole fractions is bimodal in shape, with an upper bound of 78%
