    On-chip plasmonic spin-Hall nanograting for simultaneously detecting phase and polarization singularities

    Phase and polarization singularities are important degrees of freedom for electromagnetic field manipulation. Detecting these singularities is essential for modern optics, but it is still a challenge, especially in integrated optical systems. In this paper, we propose an on-chip plasmonic spin-Hall nanograting structure that simultaneously detects both the polarization and phase singularities of the incident cylindrical vortex vector beam (CVVB). The nanograting is symmetry-breaking with different periods for the upper and lower parts, which enables the unidirectional excitation of the surface plasmon polariton depending on the topological charge of the incident optical vortex beam. Additionally, spin-Hall meta-slits are integrated onto the grating so that the structure has a chiral response for polarization detection. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the designed structure fully discriminates both the topological charges and polarization states of the incident beam simultaneously.     Silicon nitride metalenses for unpolarized high-NA visible imaging

    As one of nanoscale planar structures, metasurface has shown excellent superiorities on manipulating light intensity, phase and/or polarization with specially designed nanoposts pattern. It allows to miniature a bulky optical lens into the chip-size metalens with wavelength-order thickness, playing an unprecedented role in visible imaging systems (e.g. ultrawide-angle lens and telephoto). However, a CMOS-compatible metalens has yet to be achieved in the visible region due to the limitation on material properties such as transmission and compatibility. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a divergent metalens based on silicon nitride platform with large numerical aperture (NA~0.98) and high transmission (~0.8) for unpolarized visible light, fabricated by a 695-nm-thick hexagonal silicon nitride array with a minimum space of 42 nm between adjacent nanoposts. Nearly diffraction-limit virtual focus spots are achieved within the visible region. Such metalens enables to shrink objects into a micro-scale size field of view as small as a single-mode fiber core. Furthermore, a macroscopic metalens with 1-cm-diameter is also realized including over half billion nanoposts, showing a potential application of wide viewing-angle functionality. Thanks to the high-transmission and CMOS-compatibility of silicon nitride, our findings may open a new door for the miniaturization of optical lenses in the fields of optical fibers, microendoscopes, smart phones, aerial cameras, beam shaping, and other integrated on-chip devices.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

    Pringle manoeuvre versus selective hepatic vascular exclusion in partial hepatectomy for tumours adjacent to the hepatocaval junction: A randomized comparative study

    AbstractObjectiveTo compare the efficacy of selective hepatic vascular exclusion versus Pringle manoeuvre in partial hepatectomy for tumours adjacent to the hepatocaval junction.MethodsA randomized comparative trial was carried out. The primary endpoint was intraoperative blood loss. The secondary endpoints were operation time, blood transfusion, postoperative liver function recovery, procedure-related morbidity and in-hospital mortality.Results160 patients were randomized into 2 groups: the Pringle manoeuvre group (n = 80) and the selective hepatic vascular exclusion (SHVE) group (n = 80). Intraoperative blood loss and transfusion requirements were significantly less in the SHVE group. In the SHVE group, laceration of hepatic veins happened in 18 patients. Profuse intraoperative blood loss of over 2 L happened in 2 patients but no patient suffered from air embolism because the hepatic veins were controlled. In the Pringle group, the hepatic veins were lacerated in 20 patients, with profuse blood loss of over 2 L in 7 patients and air embolism in 3 patients. The rates of postoperative bleeding, reoperation, liver failure and mortality were significantly higher and the ICU stay and hospital stay were significantly longer in the Pringle group.ConclusionsSHVE was more efficacious than Pringle manoeuvre for partial hepatectomy in patients with tumours adjacent to the hepatocaval junction

    Preparation of reducing sugars from corncob by solid acid catalytic pretreatment combined with in situ enzymatic hydrolysis

    The efficient conversion of hemicellulose and cellulose into reducing sugars remains as one major challenge for biorefinery of lignocellulosic biomass. In this work, saccharification of corncob in the aqueous phase was effectively realized via pretreatment by magnetic carbon-based solid acid (MMCSA) catalyst, combined with the subsequent in situ enzymatic hydrolysis (occurring in the same pretreatment system after separation of MMCSA). Through the combined two-step hydrolysis of corncob, the total sugar (xylose and glucose) yield of 90.03% was obtained, including a xylose yield of 86.99% and an enzymatic digestibility of pretreatment residue of 91.24% (cellulase loading of 20 FPU/g, 24 h). Compared with the traditional enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated residue, the presented in situ enzymatic hydrolysis system can reach a comparable enzymatic digestibility in one-third reacting time with a half cellulase loading and save about 31% water consumption, which provides a more sustainable and low-cost method for the saccharification of lignocellulose

    Complete genome sequencing and analysis of six enterovirus 71 strains with different clinical phenotypes

    BACKGROUND: Hand, foot and mouth diseases (HFMD) caused by enterovirus 71(EV71) presents a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from mild febrile disease to fatal neurolocal disease. However, the mechanism of virulence is unknown. METHODS: We isolated 6 strains of EV71 from HFMD patients with or without neurological symptoms, and sequenced the whole genomes of the viruses to reveal the virulence factors of EV71. RESULTS: Phylogenetic tree based on VP1 region showed that all six strains clustered into C4a of C4 sub-genotype. In the complete polypeptide, 298 positions were found to be variable in all strains, and three of these positions (Val(P814)/Ile(P814) in VP1, Val(P1148)/Ile(P1148) in 3A and Ala (P1728)/Cys (P1728)/Val (P1728) in 3C) were conserved among the strains with neurovirulence, but variable in strains without neurovirulence. In the 5(′)-UTR region, it showed that the first 10 nucleotides were mostly conserved, however from the 11th nucleotide, nucleotide insertions and deletions were quite common. The secondary structure prediction of 5(′)-UTR sequences showed that two of three strains without neurovirulence (SDLY11 and SDLY48) were almost the same, and all strains with neurovirulence (SDLY96, SDLY107 and SDLY153) were different from each other. SDLY107 (a fatal strain) was found different from other strains on four positions (C(P241)/T(P241), A(P571)/T(P571), C(P579)/T(P579) in 5(′)-UTR and T(P7335)/C(P7335) in 3(′)-UTR). CONCLUSIONS: The three positions (Val(P814)/Ile(P814) in VP1, Val(P1148)/Ile(P1148) in 3A and Ala (P1728)/Cys (P1728)/Val (P1728) in 3C), were different between two phenotypes. These suggested that the three positions might be potential virulent positions. And the three varied positions were also found to be conserved in strains with neurovirulence, and variable in strains without neurovirulence. These might reveal that the conservation of two of the three positions or the three together were specific for the strains with neurovirulence. Varation of secondary structure of 5(′)-UTR, might be correlated to the changes of viral virulence. SDLY107 (a fatal strain) was found different from other strains on four positions, these positions might be related with death

    Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in pet dogs in Lanzhou, Northwest China

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In recent years, surveys of <it>Toxoplasma gondii </it>infection in dogs have been reported worldwide, including China. However, little is known about the prevalence of <it>T. gondii </it>in pet dogs in Northwest China. In the present study, the prevalence of <it>T. gondii </it>in pet dogs in Lanzhou, China was investigated using the modified agglutination test (MAT).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this survey, antibodies to <it>T. gondii </it>were found in 28 of 259 (10.81%) pet dogs, with MAT titers of 1:20 in 14 dogs, 1:40 in nine, 1:80 in four, and 1:160 or higher in one dog. The prevalence ranged from 6.67% to 16.67% among dogs of different ages, with low rates in young pet dogs, and high rates in older pet dogs. The seroprevalence in dogs >3 years old was higher than that in dogs ≤1 years old, but the difference was not statistically significant (<it>P ></it>0.05). The seroprevalence in male dogs was 12.50% (17 of 136), and in female dogs it was 8.94% (11 of 123), but the difference was not statistically significant (<it>P ></it>0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>A high prevalence of <it>T. gondii </it>infection was found in pet dogs in Lanzhou, Northwest China, which has implications for public health in this region. In order to reduce the risk of exposure to <it>T. gondii</it>, further measures and essential control strategies should be carried out rationally in this region.</p

    LyricWhiz: Robust Multilingual Zero-shot Lyrics Transcription by Whispering to ChatGPT

    We introduce LyricWhiz, a robust, multilingual, and zero-shot automatic lyrics transcription method achieving state-of-the-art performance on various lyrics transcription datasets, even in challenging genres such as rock and metal. Our novel, training-free approach utilizes Whisper, a weakly supervised robust speech recognition model, and GPT-4, today's most performant chat-based large language model. In the proposed method, Whisper functions as the "ear" by transcribing the audio, while GPT-4 serves as the "brain," acting as an annotator with a strong performance for contextualized output selection and correction. Our experiments show that LyricWhiz significantly reduces Word Error Rate compared to existing methods in English and can effectively transcribe lyrics across multiple languages. Furthermore, we use LyricWhiz to create the first publicly available, large-scale, multilingual lyrics transcription dataset with a CC-BY-NC-SA copyright license, based on MTG-Jamendo, and offer a human-annotated subset for noise level estimation and evaluation.
