Recently, Teng and Goyal [Journal of the Operational Research Society, Vol. 58, pp. 1252-1255, 2007.] extended and modified Huang’s model [Journal of the Operational Research Society, Vol. 54, pp. 1011-1015, 2003.] to develop their model and established the proper theoretical results to obtain the optimal solution. Their inventory model is correct and interesting. However, they give the optimal solutions showing that Theorems 1 and 2 in Teng and Goyal are not complete. The main purpose of this paper is to overcome Teng and Goyal’s shortcomings and to present complete proofs of their Theorems 1 and 2

Capillary electrophoresis–electrochemiluminescence detection method for the analysis of ibandronate in drug formulations and human urine

A simple, rapid and sensitive CE method coupled with electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection for direct analysis of ibandronate (IBAN) has been developed. Using a buffer solution of 20 mM sodium phosphate (pH 9.0) and a voltage of 13.5 kV, separation of IBAN in a 30‐cm length capillary was achieved in 3 min. ECL detection was performed with an indium tin oxide working electrode bias at 1.6 V (versus a Pt wire reference) in a 200‐mM sodium phosphate buffer (pH 8.0) containing 3.5 mM Ru(bpy) 3 2+ (where bpy=2,2′‐bipyridyl). Derivatization of IBAN prior to CE‐ECL analysis was not needed. Linear correlation ( r =0.9992, n =7) between ECL intensity and analyte concentration was obtained in the range of 0.25–50 μM IBAN. The LOD of IBAN in water was 0.08 μM. The developed method was applied to the analysis of IBAN in a drug formulation and human urine sample. SPE using magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles as the extraction phase was employed to pretreat the urine sample before CE‐ECL analysis. The linear range was 0.2–12.0 μM IBAN in human urine ( r =0.9974, n =6). The LOD of IBAN in urine was 0.06 μM. Total analysis time including sample preparation was <1 h.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87050/1/2155_ftp.pd

Learning satisfaction of undergraduates in single-sex-dominated academic fields in Taiwan

AbstractThe present study investigated relationships between undergraduates’ learning satisfaction, academic identity, self-esteem and feeling of depression and loneliness in Taiwan. Data were from a national survey in Taiwan. Participants were 15,706 third-year undergraduates (8719 female, 6987 male). The results showed that, after controlling for undergraduates’ academic performance and attitudes toward university and department, (1) learning satisfaction of females in male-dominant fields was negatively correlated with their feeling of depression, (2) learning satisfaction of males in female-dominant fields was positively correlated with their academic identity and self-esteem, and (3) learning satisfaction of undergraduates in non-dominated fields was positively correlated with their academic identity and self-esteem but also negatively correlated with their feelings of depression

The parathyroid hormone (PTH) (1-34) gene was inserted into a pcDNA3 promoter and E. coli competent cells were used to amplify the cDNA. C3H/10T1/2 stem cells were transfected with PTH (1-34) cDNA using Lipofectamine reagents. After G418 treatment live cells at a density of 4x107 were loaded onto a TheraCyte unit. After parathyroidectomy, rats were either the implanted with 4x107 TheraCyte-encapsulated cells (group A), subcutaneously injected with 4x107 live cells containing PTH (1-34) cDNA (group B) or injected with nothing (group C).Serum levels of calcium, phosphorus and PTH (1-34) were measured at baseline, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months and 4 months after therapy. Immunohistochemical staining and RT-PCR were performed to find PTH (1-34)-positive cells and to detect PTH (1-34) mRNA.Serum calcium and PTH (1-34) levels were significantly higher in group A than in group B or C. PTH (1-34)-positive cells were found in the TheraCyte group 4 months after implantation. PTH (1-34) mRNA was detected in stem cells 48 hr after transfection and also in stem cells after transfection and 72 hr after G418 treatment.Implantation of the TheraCyte-encapsulated stem cells, which were tranfected with PTH (1-34) cDNA can treat hypoparathyroidism

Peripheral Leukocytapheresis Attenuates Acute Lung Injury Induced by Lipopolysaccharide In Vivo

The mortality of acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS) remains high and efforts for prevention and treatments have shown little improvement over the past decades. The present study investigated the efficacy and mechanism of leukocytapheresis (LCAP) to partially eliminate peripheral neutrophils and attenuate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung injury in dogs. A total of 24 healthy male mongrel dogs were enrolled and randomly divided into LPS, LCAP and LCAP-sham groups. All animals were injected with LPS to induce endotoxemia. The serum levels of leucocytes, neutrophil elastase, arterial blood gas, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) subunit p65 in lung tissues were measured. The histopathology and parenchyma apoptosis of lung tissues were examined. We found that 7, 3, and 7 animals in the LPS, LCAP, and sham-LCAP groups, respectively, developed ALI 36 h after LPS infusion. The levels of NF-κB p65 in lung tissue, neutrophils and elastase in blood, decreased significantly following LCAP. LCAP also alleviated apoptosis, and NF-κB p65 in lung tissues. Collectively, our results show that partial removal of leucocytes from peripheral blood decreases elastase level in serum. This, in turn, attenuates lung injuries and may potentially decrease the incidence of ALI

Hepatic hydrothorax after blunt chest trauma

AbstractWe report a successful treatment result in a rare case of hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis, who had sustained hydrothorax after blunt thoracoabdominal trauma. This was a female patient with liver cirrhosis, Child–Turcotte–Pugh class A, without ascites before injury. She sustained blunt thoracoabdominal trauma with a left clavicle fracture dislocation and right rib fractures. There was no hemopneumothorax at initial presentation. However, dyspnea and right pleural effusion developed gradually. We inserted a chest tube to relieve the patient's symptoms, and the daily drainage amount remained consistent. Hepatic hydrothorax was confirmed by the intraperitoneal injection of radioisotope 99mTc-sulfur colloid that demonstrated one-way transdiaphragmatic flow of fluid from the peritoneal cavity to pleural cavities. Finally, the hydrothorax was treated successfully by minocycline-induced pleural symphysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of hepatic hydrothorax developed after thoracoabdominal trauma

    A 128-point Multi-Path SC FFT Architecture

This paper presents a new radix-2^k multi-path FFT architecture, named MSC FFT, which is based on a single-path radix-2 serial commutator (SC) FFT architecture. The proposed multi-path architecture has a very high hardware utilization that results in a small chip area, while providing high throughput. In addition, the adoption of radix-2^k FFT algorithms allows for simplifying the rotators even further. It is achieved by optimizing the structure of the processing element (PE). The implemented architecture is a 128-point 4-parallel multi-path SC FFT using 90 nm process. Its area and power consumption at 250 MHz are only 0.167 mm2 and 14.81 mW, respectively. Compared with existing works, the proposed design reduces significantly the chip rea and the power consumption, while providing high throughput.Comment: Conference paper, ISCAS 2020, 5 page
