    GPSP: Graph Partition and Space Projection based Approach for Heterogeneous Network Embedding

    In this paper, we propose GPSP, a novel Graph Partition and Space Projection based approach, to learn the representation of a heterogeneous network that consists of multiple types of nodes and links. Concretely, we first partition the heterogeneous network into homogeneous and bipartite subnetworks. Then, the projective relations hidden in bipartite subnetworks are extracted by learning the projective embedding vectors. Finally, we concatenate the projective vectors from bipartite subnetworks with the ones learned from homogeneous subnetworks to form the final representation of the heterogeneous network. Extensive experiments are conducted on a real-life dataset. The results demonstrate that GPSP outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines in two key network mining tasks: node classification and clustering.Comment: WWW 2018 Poste

    Association between the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T polymorphism and hepatocellular carcinoma risk: a meta-analysis

    Abstract Background Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a key enzyme in the metabolism of folate. The non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphism (nsSNP), C677T (Ala>Val, rs1801133), has been verified to impair enzyme activity. The association with cancer susceptibility, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), has also been widely studied. The results, however, were inconsistent. To shed light on the influence of MTHFR C677T polymorphism on HCC, a meta-analysis was conducted. Methods The meta-analysis of C677T consisted of 10 studies (1814 cases/2862 controls). The association was measured by using random-effect (RE) or fixed-effect (FE) odds ratio (OR) combined with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) according to the studies' heterogeneity. Results Using genetic model analysis, C677T polymorphism was found to increase the risk of HCC in a complete overdominant model, which indicates that heterozygotes CT are at a lesser risk of HCC than either homozygotes CC or TT. Meta-analyses of the 10 studies showed that the TT genotype increased the risk of HCC as compared to the CT genotype: FE OR was 1.20 (95%CI: 1.00-1.45, p for heterogeneity = 0.21). When subgroup analysis was done between the HCC cases and the chronic liver disease (CLD) patients of four studies, meta-analysis showed that individuals with the TT genotype had increased HCC risk compared with those with the CT genotype: FE OR (TT vs. CT) reached 1.81 (1.22-2.71, p for heterogeneity = 0.25). Meanwhile, the C677T polymorphism also increased HCC risk in a recessive model when cases were compared to CLD patients of four studies: RE OR reached 1.85 (95%CI: 1.00-3.42, p for heterogeneity = 0.06). Overall, there was some extent heterogeneity when analyses were performed in various models. There was no publication bias. Conclusion MTHFR C677T polymorphism increased the risk of HCC in an overdominant model, and might be a risk factor for HCC occurrence, especially in CLD patients. The association warranted further studies.</p

    NAIRS: A Neural Attentive Interpretable Recommendation System

    In this paper, we develop a neural attentive interpretable recommendation system, named NAIRS. A self-attention network, as a key component of the system, is designed to assign attention weights to interacted items of a user. This attention mechanism can distinguish the importance of the various interacted items in contributing to a user profile. Based on the user profiles obtained by the self-attention network, NAIRS offers personalized high-quality recommendation. Moreover, it develops visual cues to interpret recommendations. This demo application with the implementation of NAIRS enables users to interact with a recommendation system, and it persistently collects training data to improve the system.     The Effect of Microclimates in the Aeolian Sand Environment at the Mogao Grottoes, China

    To study the micro-meteorological effects of different underlying surfaces of structures to protect the Mogao Grottoes, we analyzed basic meteorological measurements collected at weather stations located in front of the grottoes, on top of the grottoes and in the artificial Gobi. The results show that the shelterbelts in front of the grottoes have a heat-retaining effect. The profile of average daily solar radiation in front of the grottoes forms a sharp peak and the profile in the Gobi forms a parabola, but these patterns vary in different seasons. The artificial Gobi was more susceptible to extremes in temperature and had a faster response and wider response range to ground temperature. The average monthly air temperature, average monthly relative humidity, and the average wind speed in the artificial Gobi tend to first decrease and then increase with measurement height

    Effects of Density and Moisture Variation on Dynamic Deformation Properties of Compacted Lateritic Soil

    A series of repeated load triaxial tests were conducted in this study to investigate the influences of compaction density and postcompaction moisture variation on the dynamic elastic modulus (Ed) and plastic permanent strain (PPS) of compacted lateritic soil. Specimens were compacted at optimum moisture content (OMC) and three degrees of compaction (90%, 93%, and 96%). Then the specimens were dried or wetted to different moisture contents (OMC, OMC±3%, OMC±6%, and OMC+9%) prior to testing for Ed and PPS. Results show that moisture content has greater influence on the Ed and PSS than compaction degree, and the increase in moisture content leads to a decrease of Ed and an increase of PPS. Furthermore, an empirical relationship between Ed and applied cyclic stress (σd) is developed that incorporates density and moisture variations. Three different evolution types of PPS with number of load cycles, plastic stable, plastic creep, and incremental collapse, are identified as the increase of moisture content. In addition, the critical dynamic stress (σdc) separating stable and unstable deformation is determined based on the shakedown concept. The envelope curves of σdc-moisture of lateritic soil with different degrees of compaction are also determined to provide reference for the pavement design

    Abstract: In order to distinguish the difference of non-stationary signals, the novel time-frequency analysis approach, i.e. Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT), is applied in this paper. Firstly, Hilbert-Huang transform is briefly introduced. Secondly, two different non-stationary signals are described in Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Hilbert spectra. With these results, the two signals that looked apparently similar in time waves are distinctly different from each other. It is proved that HHT is effective for the purpose of distinction of non-stationary signals

    AI-accelerated Discovery of Altermagnetic Materials

    Altermagnetism, a new magnetic phase, has been theoretically proposed and experimentally verified to be distinct from ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. Although altermagnets have been found to possess many exotic physical properties, the very limited availability of known altermagnetic materials (e.g., 14 confirmed materials) hinders the study of such properties. Hence, discovering more types of altermagnetic materials is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of altermagnetism and thus facilitating new applications in the next-generation information technologies, e.g., storage devices and high-sensitivity sensors. Here, we report 25 new altermagnetic materials that cover metals, semiconductors, and insulators, discovered by an AI search engine unifying symmetry analysis, graph neural network pre-training, optimal transport theory, and first-principles electronic structure calculation. The wide range of electronic structural characteristics reveals that various novel physical properties manifest in these newly discovered altermagnetic materials, e.g., anomalous Hall effect, anomalous Kerr effect, and topological property. Noteworthy, we discovered 8 i-wave altermagnetic materials for the first time. Overall, the AI search engine performs much better than human experts and suggests a set of new altermagnetic materials with unique properties, outlining its potential for accelerated discovery of the materials with targeting properties.Comment: 38 pages; 22 figures; 3 table

    The spring-like effect of microRNA-31 in balancing inflammatory and regenerative responses in colitis

    Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic inflammatory disorders caused by the disruption of immune tolerance to the gut microbiota. MicroRNA-31 (MIR31) has been proven to be up-regulated in intestinal tissues from patients with IBDs and colitis-associated neoplasias. While the functional role of MIR31 in colitis and related diseases remain elusive. Combining mathematical modeling and experimental analysis, we systematically explored the regulatory mechanism of MIR31 in inflammatory and epithelial regeneration responses in colitis. Level of MIR31 presents an “adaptation” behavior in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, and the similar behavior is also observed for the key cytokines of p65 and STAT3. Simulation analysis predicts MIR31 suppresses the activation of p65 and STAT3 but accelerates the recovery of epithelia in colitis, which are validated by our experimental observations. Further analysis reveals that the number of proliferative epithelial cells, which characterizes the inflammatory process and the recovery of epithelia in colitis, is mainly determined by the inhibition of MIR31 on IL17RA. MIR31 promotes epithelial regeneration in low levels of DSS-induced colitis but inhibits inflammation with high DSS levels, which is dominated by the competition for MIR31 to either inhibit inflammation or promote epithelial regeneration by binding to different targets. The binding probability determines the functional transformation of MIR31, but the functional strength is determined by MIR31 levels. Thus, the role of MIR31 in the inflammatory response can be described as the “spring-like effect,” where DSS, MIR31 action strength, and proliferative epithelial cell number are regarded as external force, intrinsic spring force, and spring length, respectively. Overall, our study uncovers the vital roles of MIR31 in balancing inflammation and the recovery of epithelia in colitis, providing potential clues for the development of therapeutic targets in drug design

    Prognostic value of the ascites characteristics in pseudomyxoma peritonei originating from the appendix

    BackgroundPseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare disease, with the overall survival (OS) influenced by many factors. To date, no ascites characteristics have been reported to predict OS of patients with PMP. The present study therefore aims to describe the ascites characteristics for PMP and identify prognostic factors for survival.MethodsBetween June 2010 and June 2020, 473 PMP patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy were included in a retrospective study. Survival analysis was performed with the Kaplan–Meier method by the log-rank test and a Cox proportional hazards model. Associations between categorical variables were analyzed using the chi-squared test.ResultsAmong all included patients, 61% were women. The median OS was 47 months (range, 4–124 months) at the last follow-up in December 2020. Ascites characteristics can be divided into light blood ascites, “Jelly” mucus ascites, and faint yellow and clear ascites. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that the degree of radical surgery, ascites characteristics, and pathological grade were independently associated with OS in PMP patients. The chi-squared test documented that faint yellow “Jelly” ascites were related to low-grade PMP and light blood ascites were associated with high-grade PMP (P &lt; 0.01).ConclusionsLight blood ascites, incomplete cytoreduction surgery, and high-grade histopathology may predict poor OS in appendix-derived PMP
