A Nevus of OTA with Intraoral Involvement: A Rare Case Report
Nevus of Ota, which originally was described by Ota and Tanino in 1939. It is characterized as congenital or acquired hamartoma of dermal melanocytes, presents clinically as a blue or gray patch on the face within the distribution of the ophthalmic and maxillary branches of the fifth cranial (trigeminal) nerve. Involvement of the palatal mucosa occurs rarely in nevus of Ota, when it occurs, it usually blends with the oral mucosa and is typically irregular, ill defined and often present as a mottled patch. Nevus of Ota is rare in the Indian subcontinent. So far very less cases of nevus of ota with intraoral involvement have been documented in the English literature. We report a rare case of intraoral nevus of Ota in a 20 year-old female patient
Case Report The Solitary Variant of Mandibular Intraosseous Neurofibroma: Report of a Rare Entity
Neurofibroma (NF) is a benign neoplasm derived from peripheral nerve cells. NF may extend either as a solitary lesion or as part of a generalized syndrome of neurofibromatosis. Intraorally, the intraosseous variant of neurofibroma is a very rare tumor. The literature provides only few cases of solitary intraosseous neurofibroma of the mandible. We report a case of 28-year-old female who was diagnosed with a solitary intraosseous neurofibroma involving the lower left quadrant of the mandible. The present case is rare in regard to its dimensions and its location
Studies on CGMS Based Short Duration Hybrids of Pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] in Terms of Combining Ability
To estimate combining ability, twenty seven hybrids were made from 12
parents in a line × tester mating design during Kharif 2015-16 and tested in
a Randomized block design with three replications during Kharif 2016-17.
Among these parents ICPL 161 and ICPL 149 had desirable GCA effect for
grain yield per plant and its contributing characters. Ten crosses exhibited
significant positive SCA effect for grain yield. Out of them most promising
crosses in terms of grain yield were ICPA 2039 × ICPL 161, ICPA 2156 ×
ICPL 86022 and ICPA 2039 × ICPL 90048. On the basis of per se
performance and combining ability, the parents ICPA 2039, ICPL 88039,
ICPL 161 and ICPL 149 can be used for future hybridization programmes
Study of CGMS based Short Duration Hybrids of Pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] In Terms of Heterosis
Twenty seven pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] hybrids were
developed by hand pollination using three CMS lines (A lines) and nine
testers (R lines). These hybrids along with their parents and two standard
checks (VL Arhar1 and ICPL 161) were evaluated in a randomized block
design with three replications during kharif 2016-17 for the heterosis
studies. Results indicated that the crosses ICPA 2039 x ICPL161 and ICPA
2039 x ICPL 90048 had manifested significant heterobeltiosis and standard
heterosis over two checks viz., VL Arhar1 and ICPL 161 for grain yield per
plant and yield contributing characters. The stability of these promising
crosses can be studied across the different environments and feasibility for
their commercial utilisation could be tested in further generations
Performance of Parents and Hybrids of Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) in terms of Yield and Yield Contributing Characters
Twelve parents were used in the crossing programme to produce 27 hybrids in L×T fashion
during kharif 2015-16. In the field conditions, parents and hybrids were planted in Randomized
Block Design of three replications and evaluated for the performance in terms of yield and yield
contributing characters during kharif 2016-17. Observations were recorded on ten characters
viz., plant height, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, number of primary branches per
plant, number of secondary branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per
pod, 100 seed weight, grain yield per plant and harvest index. It was observed that increase in
number of pods per plant directly contributed to increased yield. Among the twenty seven
hybrids, ICPA 2039 × ICPL 161, ICPA 2039 × ICPL 90048 and ICPA 2039 × ICPL149 had
high grain yield
Is pulpotomy obsolete? A clinical study on the success rates of indirect pulp capping and pulpotomy in the treatment of deep dentinal caries in primary second molars
Background and Objectives: Traditionally, there are two treatment modalities for vital primary teeth with deep carious lesion, which include indirect pulp therapy (IPT) and pulpotomy. Enormous research and review in vital pulp therapy gave rise to a question, if primary tooth pulpotomy is obsolete, and should IPT replace pulpotomy? IPT has shown higher long-term success rates than any pulpotomy procedures other than mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Hence, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the success rates of IPT using calcium hydroxide and MTA pulpotomy clinically and radiographically. Materials and Methods: Eighty primary second molars were selected and randomly divided into two therapeutic groups of 40 each. Group 1 were treated with IPT using calcium hydroxide paste and Group 2 were treated with conventional pulpotomy using MTA paste followed by stainless steel crown. Follow-up evaluation was done at an interval of 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months. Results: The follow-up evaluation revealed 100% clinical success in teeth treated with MTA pulpotomy and one radiographic failure of internal resorption detected at 3 months. There was 100% clinical and radiographic success with teeth treated with IPT. Though there was one radiographic failure with MTA pulpotomy, it was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Indications being the same for both the procedures why not opt for IPT which offers several advantages over pulpotomy like fewer potential side effects, non-invasive, decreased chair time, child cooperation, and cost-effectiveness
Retrieval of swallowed endodontic file with gastro-scope
Swallowing or aspiration of dental instruments and objects can occur in every field of dentistry. These instruments and objects vary in sizes, shapes and quality which make it difficult to locate their position. Gastro scope is a versatile instrument used in both diagnostic as well as interventional surgical procedures. This report emphasizes on the important of using rubber dam during root canal treatment and the use of gastroscope as an emergency procedure when the swallowed instrument has been located in stomach; to prevents further complications
Serum lipid profile as a prognostic marker in oral submucous fibrosis
Introduction: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is the most prevalent precancerous condition in India, with high prevalence rates found in North Gujarat. In spite of the high prevalence and its potential to undergo malignant transformation, this condition has not been widely investigated with respect to the serum lipid levels. The changes in lipid profile have long been associated with cancer as lipids play a key role in the maintenance of cell integrity. Aim: To investigate the alterations and clinical significance of serum lipid profiles in OSMF patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 50 subjects were included in the study and divided into two groups. Group I consisted of 40 clinically diagnosed OSMF subjects and group II consisted of 10 healthy subjects. After taking a thorough history, clinical examination, and informed consent, all the patients were sent for lipid profile estimation, which consisted of (i) serum total cholesterol (TC), (ii) low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, (iii) high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, (iv) very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, and (v) serum triglycerides (TG). Results: The serum lipid levels were significantly lower in patients with OSMF than in the controls, which was most evident in stage IV OSMF. From the present results, it is evident that the level of serum lipids decreases with the progression of the disease. Conclusion: This study suggests that decrease in lipid levels may be considered as a useful marker in the early diagnosis of oral premalignant conditions like OSMF
