VLBI Imagings of Kilo-parsec Knot in 3C 380
We investigate observational properties of a kilo-parsec scale knot in
radio-loud quasar 3C 380 by using two epoch archival data obtained by Very Long
Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at 5 GHz on 1998 July and 2001 April. We succeed
in obtaining the highest spatial resolution image of the bright knot K1 located
at 732 milliarcseconds, or more than 20 kpc de-projected, downstream from the
nucleus three times better than previously obtained highest resolution image by
Papageorgiou et al. (2006). Our images reveal, with new clarity, "inverted
bow-shock" structure in K1 facing the nucleus and its morphology resembles a
conical shock wave. By comparing the two epoch images directly, we explore the
kinematics of K1 and obtain the upper limit of apparent velocity, 0.25 mas/yr
or 9.8 c of K1 for the first time. The upper limit of apparent velocity is
marginally smaller than superluminal motions seen in the core region. Further
new epoch VLBI observations are necessary to measure the proper motion at K1.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

Worksheet templates have been prepared for use in developing novel immunoassay systems. One is for drawing Scatchard plots to calculate the affinity constant (Ka) from experimental data by least squares regression. The other is to construct the theoretical standard curve in competitive radioimmunoassay (RIA) using the dissociation constant (Kd=1/Ka). The former is useful to characterize antibodies for screening. The latter can be used to estimate the theoretical detection limit of competitive RIA, for comparison in assessment of developing noncompetitive hapten immunoassay system. The evaluation of these worksheets was carried out by applying them to actual RIA data, comparing theoretical and observed standard curves. The values were in fair agreement with each other, using polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies, and single-chain Fv fragments. As spreadsheet programs are popular in personal computers, they are useful for the purpose of characterizing antibodies and assessment of assay systems
Snail1 expression in human colon cancer DLD-1 cells confers invasive properties without N-cadherin expression
AbstractThe epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a fundamental characteristic of carcinoma cells. EMT is generally associated with a change in cellular morphology from cobblestone to spindle shape, reduced expression of epithelial markers such as E-cadherin, and enhanced expression of mesenchymal markers such as N-cadherin. This EMT-associated reciprocal expression of E-cadherin and N-cadherin has been called the “cadherin switch”. Downregulation of E-cadherin enables cells to dissociate from colonies while upregulation of N-cadherin is associated with increased invasiveness. The transcription factor Snail1 induces these changes in various epithelial cell lines, including canine MDCK cells and human A431 cells. In the present study, we introduced a Snail1 expression vector into human DLD-1 cells and isolated stable transfectants. These cells showed changes in morphology, reduced expression of epithelial marker E-cadherin and occludin, and elevated invasion and migration. However, neither expression of N-cadherin protein nor its corresponding mRNA was detected. Therefore, elevated N-cadherin expression is not required for invasiveness of the cells
Multifrequency VLBI Observations of the Broad Absorption Line Quasar J1020+4320: Recently Restarted Jet Activity?
This paper reports very-long-baseline interferometry observations of the
radio-loud broad absorption line (BAL) quasar J1020+4320 at 1.7, 2.3, 6.7, and
8.4 GHz using the Japanese VLBI network (JVN) and European VLBI network (EVN).
The radio morphology is compact with a size of ~10 pc. The convex radio
spectrum is stable over the last decade; an observed peak frequency of 3.2 GHz
is equivalent to 9.5 GHz in the rest frame, suggesting an age of the order of
~100 years as a radio source, according to an observed correlation between
linear size and peak frequency of compact steep spectrum (CSS) and giga-hertz
peaked spectrum (GPS) radio sources. A low-frequency radio excess suggests
relic of past jet activity. J1020+4320 may be one of the quasars with recurrent
and short-lived jet activity during a BAL-outflowing phase.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in PAS
