WHITE HANDS WAVING: AN INTRODUCTION TO FUKUNOSUKE KUSUMI’S THE SANTA ANITA COMMEMORATIVE BOOK OF IMAGES

My project examines a range of expressive feelings that reflect Fukunosuke Kusumi’s lived experience within broader contexts of confinement. Through interpreting four key pieces—an untitled portrait of a man sitting over the edge of a drainage ditch, an untitled landscape of horse stables repurposed into “homes,” a landscape entitled The Separation, and a book cover bearing the inscription, “Santa Anita Kinen Gajō” (The Santa Anita Commemorative Book of Images)—I argue that the Japanese terms wabi sabi (侘寂), shikata ga nai (仕方がない) and gaman (我慢) illuminate primary ways in which Kusumi affectively navigated the first and arguably most traumatic six months of his incarceration period. I contend that through closely reading Fukunosuke Kusumi’s visual narrative, we may attend to a more capacious view of history that amplifies a multiplicity of perspectives.Master of Art

    Get PDF
This paper presents a collaborative learning course in which students from four universities in different Asian countries work in mixed teams to learn how to develop user-centered products and solve problems in a hands-on way using the Design Thinking framework. For the past three years, the courses were conducted entirely online. Cooperation and collaboration among diverse people from different backgrounds are essential to solving the social problems facing the world today. Like many universities, we have been actively sending our students abroad to provide opportunities to experience diverse cultures and values, but the pandemic has made it very difficult to travel abroad for the past three years, forcing universities to shift from face-to-face classes to online classes. The pandemic has made it extremely difficult to travel abroad for the past three years, and universities have been forced to shift from face-to-face to online classes. During this time, four Asian universities, to which the authors belong, have jointly launched an online problem-solving collaborative learning course aimed at supporting students to No one will be left behind, as stated in the SDGs.The structure of the course, profiles of participating students, improvements to the course, student evaluations, and challenges found are described

Oni who appears in old tales, is generally expressed, saying "growing one or two angles on the head", "the color of big body is red, blue or black ", "hairy and power being strong ", etc. So they are imagined as a male in many cases. "Oni" lives in the heart of the mountains and comes to village. He also kidnaps food, property, and a daughter. Its existence is evil and it is to be eradicated by human being at the end of the talk. "Yomigatari" of 47 volumes were edited from 2004 to 2005. Those were reedited to make practical and educational use for children. In "Yomigatari", female "Oni" slightly appears, and there are some tales in which "Oni" is not eradicated by human being. While female "Oni" is appeared as old woman, male "Oni" does not have any relation to his age. Is there any relation between the sex of "Oni" and the subject of a tale? Is there any relation between the sex of "Oni" and the contents which should be informed of a child? This study analyzes how the difference of the sex of "Oni" influences the subject of a tale through "Yomigatari"

Knockdown of the bovine prion gene PRNP by RNA interference (RNAi) technology

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Since prion gene-knockout mice do not contract prion diseases and animals in which production of prion protein (PrP) is reduced by half are resistant to the disease, we hypothesized that bovine animals with reduced PrP would be tolerant to BSE. Hence, attempts were made to produce bovine <it>PRNP</it> (b<it>PRNP</it>) that could be knocked down by RNA interference (RNAi) technology. Before an in vivo study, optimal conditions for knocking down b<it>PRNP</it> were determined in cultured mammalian cell systems. Factors examined included siRNA (short interfering RNA) expression plasmid vectors, target sites of <it>PRNP</it>, and lengths of siRNAs.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Four siRNA expression plasmid vectors were used: three harboring different cloning sites were driven by the human U6 promoter (hU6), and one by the human tRNAVal promoter. Six target sites of bovine <it>PRNP </it>were designed using an algorithm. From 1 (22 mer) to 9 (19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, and 29 mer) siRNA expression vectors were constructed for each target site. As targets of siRNA, the entire b<it>PRNP </it>coding sequence was connected to the reporter gene of the fluorescent EGFP, or of firefly luciferase or <it>Renilla </it>luciferase. Target plasmid DNA was co-transfected with siRNA expression vector DNA into HeLaS3 cells, and fluorescence or luminescence was measured. The activities of siRNAs varied widely depending on the target sites, length of the siRNAs, and vectors used. Longer siRNAs were less effective, and 19 mer or 21 mer was generally optimal. Although 21 mer GGGGAGAACTTCACCGAAACT expressed by a hU6-driven plasmid with a <it>Bsp </it>MI cloning site was best under the present experimental conditions, the corresponding tRNA promoter-driven plasmid was almost equally useful. The effectiveness of this siRNA was confirmed by immunostaining and Western blotting.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Four siRNA expression plasmid vectors, six target sites of b<it>PRNP</it>, and various lengths of siRNAs from 19 mer to 29 mer were examined to establish optimal conditions for knocking down of b<it>PRNP </it>in vitro. The most effective siRNA so far tested was 21 mer GGGGAGAACTTCACCGAAACT driven either by a hU6 or tRNA promoter, a finding that provides a basis for further studies in vivo.</p

Folk tales have been handed down to children, and attracted widespread popularity as a child culture children favor. However, folktales have been utilized not only as children\u27s amusement, but also as one of the ways that adults make a variety of important information known to the children. From this eaning, what appears in folk tales has a role to symbolize something that should be shown to children. In Japanese folktales, "Oni" appears frequently as a terror. And also in Korean folk tales, "Tokkebi" a has the same form with Japanese "Oni". However, the characteristics of "Oni" and "Tokkebi" are not described in the same way. What Japanese "Oni" and Korean "Tokkebi" have symbolized and what adults have intended when they talk to children were considered

Characterization of Bovidae sex-determining gene SRY

In mammals, testis determination is under the control of the sex-determining gene SRY. This Y-linked gene encodes a protein with a DNA binding domain similar to those found in high-mobility-group proteins. Here we report the cloning and sequences of the SRY genes of yak and Chinese native cattle. Our data show that SRY genes in Bovidae are less divergent, especially in the coding and 3' regions

The purpose of psychiatric nursing is not only to solve problems in the field of psychiatry but also to promote an understanding of psychiatric health that is basic to all individuals. The underlying goal of this research is to strengthen the role of psychiatric nursing education so that it can train nurses who can provide the kind of support and assistance to patients that will enable them to actively lead the kind of life they aspire to. To achieve these goals, this study explored various types of task-based learning activities that could be implemented in the education of psychiatric nurses. Task-based learning was selected for implementation because it is a method that encourages students to independently undertake the learning of presented tasks and thus focuses on allowing students to develop their own motivations for learning. Specifically, during class each student engaged in self-reflection through undertaking learning tasks and activities designed to promote understanding of issues pertaining to mentally disabled individuals. These tasks included the use of newspaper articles related to these issues selected by the students themselves, application of audiovisual teaching materials, and process recording. These classes all aimed to provide opportunities for students to participate actively and think independently. Specifically, the instructor first presented tasks to students, compiled issues obtained from the records submitted by students, and then made use of the issues that were compiled as teaching material. The study analyzes the results of the teaching/learning activities and their impact on nursing students and further proposes issues for future consideration and investigation. One of the conclusions of the study is that task-based learning is effective not only in the teaching and training of students in psychiatric nursing, which was the focus of this study, but that it may also be a valuable approach in a variety of adult learning programs
