Solvent free synthesis of n-alkylated imino indoline-2-one derivatives under microwave irradiation
The solvent-free microwave-assisted syntheses of N-alkyl isatin Schiff base derivatives are reported. CAPTCHaStar! A novel CAPTCHA based on interactive shape discovery
Over the last years, most websites on which users can register (e.g., email
providers and social networks) adopted CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public
Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) as a countermeasure against
automated attacks. The battle of wits between designers and attackers of
CAPTCHAs led to current ones being annoying and hard to solve for users, while
still being vulnerable to automated attacks.
In this paper, we propose CAPTCHaStar, a new image-based CAPTCHA that relies
on user interaction. This novel CAPTCHA leverages the innate human ability to
recognize shapes in a confused environment. We assess the effectiveness of our
proposal for the two key aspects for CAPTCHAs, i.e., usability, and resiliency
to automated attacks. In particular, we evaluated the usability, carrying out a
thorough user study, and we tested the resiliency of our proposal against
several types of automated attacks: traditional ones; designed ad-hoc for our
proposal; and based on machine learning. Compared to the state of the art, our
proposal is more user friendly (e.g., only some 35% of the users prefer current
solutions, such as text-based CAPTCHAs) and more resilient to automated

Angiopoietin-2 predicts morbidity in adults with Fontan physiology.
Morbidity in patients with single-ventricle Fontan circulation is common and includes arrhythmias, edema, and pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVM) among others. We sought to identify biomarkers that may predict such complications. Twenty-five patients with Fontan physiology and 12 control patients with atrial septal defects (ASD) that underwent cardiac catheterization were included. Plasma was collected from the hepatic vein and superior vena cava and underwent protein profiling for a panel of 20 analytes involved in angiogenesis and endothelial dysfunction. Ten (40%) of Fontan patients had evidence of PAVM, eighteen (72%) had a history of arrhythmia, and five (20%) were actively in arrhythmia or had a recent arrhythmia. Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) was higher in Fontan patients (8,875.4 ± 3,336.9 pg/mL) versus the ASD group (1,663.6 ± 587.3 pg/mL, p < 0.0001). Ang-2 was higher in Fontan patients with active or recent arrhythmia (11,396.0 ± 3,457.7 vs 8,118.2 ± 2,795.1 pg/mL, p < 0.05). A threshold of 8,500 pg/mL gives Ang-2 a negative predictive value of 100% and positive predictive value of 42% in diagnosing recent arrhythmia. Ang-2 is elevated among adults with Fontan physiology. Ang-2 level is associated with active or recent arrhythmia, but was not found to be associated with PAVM
Dications of Benzylidenefluorene and Diphenylmethylidene Fluorene: The Relationship between Magnetic and Energetic Measures of Antiaromaticity
Oxidation of m- and p-substituted benzylidene fluorenes to antiaromatic dications was attempted by electrochemical and chemical means. Electrochemical oxidation to dications was successful for benzylidene fluorenes with p-methoxy, p-methyl, p-fluoro, and unsubstituted phenyl rings in the 3-position; attempts to oxidize the m-substituted derivatives via electrochemistry were unsuccessful. Chemical oxidation with SbF5/SO2ClF gave the dication of 9-[(4-methoxyphenyl)methylene]-9H-fluorene cleanly; oxidation of all other substituted benzylidene fluorenes resulted in mixtures of products. The excellent linear relationship between the chemical shifts calculated by the GIAO method and the experimental shifts for the p-methoxy-substituted benzylidene fluorene dication suggests that the calculations satisfactorily reflect the magnetic properties of this dication and potentially those of the other dications studied. The redox potentials from electrochemical oxidation, a measure of the stability of the dications, showed a good linear relationship with another measure of stability, the calculated difference in energy between each dication and its neutral precursor. The dications of benzylidene fluorenes were less stable than the dications of diphenylmethylidene fluorenes; within each type of compound, dications withp-substituted phenyl rings were more stable than dications with m-substituted phenyl rings and dications with phenyl rings substituted with electron-donating groups were more stable than dications with phenyl rings substituted with electron-withdrawing groups. The antiaromaticity of the fluorenyl system was assessed through the nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) that was also calculated by the GIAO method. The plot of the NICS values per square area versus the calculated energy difference for the dications showed a moderate degree of linearity; the plot of NICS values per square area versus the oxidation potentials was less linear. Thus, a suggestive, but not conclusive, relationship between magnetic and energetic measures of antiaromaticity was observed
Use of group records of feed intake to select for feed efficiency in rabbit
Models for genetic evaluation of feed efficiency (FE) for animals housed in groups when they are either fed ad libitum (F) or on restricted (R) feeding were implemented. Definitions of FE on F included group records of feed intake (¯FI_F) and individual records of growth rate (GF) and metabolic weight (MF). Growth rate (GR) as FE measurement on R was used.
Data corresponded to 5,336 kits from a rabbit sire line, from 1,255 litters in 14 batches and 667 cages. A five-trait mixed model (also with metabolic weight on R, MR) was implemented including, for each trait, the systematic effects of batch, body weight at weaning, parity order and litter size; and the random effects of litter, additive genetic and individual. A Bayesian analysis was performed. Conditional traits such as ¯FI_F |M_F,G_F and G_F |M_F,¯FI_F were obtained from elements of additive genetics ( ( ¯FI_F |M_F,G_F )_g and ( G_F |M_F,¯FI_F )_g ) or phenotypic (( ¯FI_F |M_F,G_F )_p and ( G_F |M_F,¯FI_F )_p ) (co)variance matrices. In the first case, heritabilities were low (0.07 and 0.06 for ( ¯FI_F |M_F,G_F )_g and ( G_F |M_F,¯FI_F )_g, respectively) but null genetic correlation between the conditional and conditioning traits is guaranteed. In the second case, heritabilities were higher (0.22 and 0.16 for ( ¯FI_F |M_F,G_F )_p and ( G_F |M_F,¯FI_F )_p, respectively) but the genetic correlation between ( ¯FI_F |M_F,G_F )_p and G_F was moderate (0.58). Heritability of GR was low (0.08). This trait was negatively correlated with ( G_F |M_F,¯FI_F )_p and ( G_F |M_F,¯FI_F )_gof animals on F, which indicate a different genetic background. The correlation between GR and GF was also low to moderate (0.48) and the additive variance of GF was almost 4 times that of GR, suggesting the presence of a substantial genotype by feeding regimen interaction.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Survival after bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis: Analysis of preoperative risk factors
ObjectivePrognostic factors for survival after bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis for functionally single ventricle are not well defined. We analyzed preoperative hemodynamic and echocardiographic data to determine risk factors for death or transplantation at least 1 year after bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis.MethodsData for all patients who underwent bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis before 5 years of age at our institution from September 1995 through June 2005 were analyzed. Available preoperative echocardiograms and catheterizations were reviewed. Survivors were compared with those who died or underwent transplantation. Bivariable associations between demographic and clinical risk factors and survival status (alive without transplantation vs dead or transplanted) were assessed with Wilcoxon rank sum test and χ2 or Fisher exact tests. Survival functions were constructed with Kaplan–Meier estimates, and event times compared between subgroups with log–rank tests. Cox proportional hazard modeling was used for multivariable modeling of risk of death or transplantation.ResultsOne hundred sixty-seven patients underwent bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis with hemi-Fontan (n = 62) or bidirectional Glenn (n = 105) operations. Three patients died before discharge, 11 died later, and 1 has undergone transplantation. Freedom from death or transplantation after bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis was 96% at 1 year and 89% at 5 years. Multivariable analysis of preoperative variables showed atrioventricular valve regurgitation to be an independent risk factor for death or transplantation (hazard ratio 2.8, 95% confidence interval 1.1–7.1, P = .02).ConclusionAlthough survival after bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis is high, preoperative atrioventricular valve regurgitation is an important risk factor for death or transplantation
Noncoronary Cardiac Abnormalities Are Associated With Coronary Artery Dilation and With Laboratory Inflammatory Markers in Acute Kawasaki Disease
ObjectivesWe explored the association of noncoronary cardiac abnormalities with coronary artery dilation and with laboratory inflammatory markers early after Kawasaki disease (KD) diagnosis.BackgroundLeft ventricular (LV) dysfunction, mitral regurgitation (MR), and aortic root dilation occur early after diagnosis; their associations with coronary artery dilation and inflammatory markers have not been well-described.MethodsCentrally interpreted echocardiograms were obtained at KD diagnosis and 1 and 5 weeks after diagnosis on 198 subjects in the National Institutes of Health-sponsored Pediatric Heart Network KD pulsed steroid trial. Regression models were constructed to investigate the relationships among early LV dysfunction, MR, and aortic root dilation with coronary artery dilation and laboratory inflammatory markers.ResultsAt diagnosis, LV systolic dysfunction was present in 20% of subjects and was associated with coronary artery dilation, seen in 29% (p = 0.004). Although LV dysfunction improved rapidly, LV dysfunction at diagnosis predicted greater odds of coronary artery dilation at 1 and 5 weeks after diagnosis (5-week odds ratio: 2.7, 95% confidence interval: 1.2 to 6.3). At diagnosis, MR was present in 27% of subjects and aortic root dilation was present in 8%; each was associated with larger coronary artery size at diagnosis. Left ventricular dysfunction was associated with higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate and, at diagnosis only, lower serum albumin; MR was associated with higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate and lower albumin at all times. Aortic root size had little association with inflammatory markers.ConclusionsNoncoronary cardiac abnormalities are associated with coronary artery dilation and laboratory evidence of inflammation in the first 5 weeks after KD, suggesting a shared inflammatory mechanism.
