The New Arthurian Economics
The popular understanding of monetary policy is reviewed. A flaw is uncovered: Changes in the components of "money" have been ignored. Policy has therefore allowed the development of a monetary imbalance. This imbalance may be described as the excessive reliance on credit. The flaw has reduced the effectiveness of monetary policy. It is responsible for our failure to bring inflation to a halt. It is responsible for massive debt accumulation. It is responsible for our economic problems today. A solution is proposed.monetary imbalance; monetary policy; new economic theory; credit-money; credit in circulation; debt accumulation; cause of hard times

The Data Processing Pipeline for the Herschel-HIFI Instrument
The HIFI data processing pipeline was developed to systematically process
diagnostic, calibration and astronomical observations taken with the HIFI
science instrumentas part of the Herschel mission. The HIFI pipeline processed
data from all HIFI observing modes within the Herschel automated processing
environment, as well as, within an interactive environment. A common software
framework was developed to best support the use cases required by the
instrument teams and by the general astronomers. The HIFI pipeline was built on
top of that and was designed with a high degree of modularity. This modular
design provided the necessary flexibility and extensibility to deal with the
complexity of batch-processing eighteen different observing modes, to support
the astronomers in the interactive analysis and to cope with adjustments
necessary to improve the pipeline and the quality of the end-products. This
approach to the software development and data processing effort was arrived at
by coalescing the lessons learned from similar research based projects with the
understanding that a degree of foresight was required given the overall length
of the project. In this article, both the successes and challenges of the HIFI
software development process are presented. To support future similar projects
and retain experience gained lessons learned are extracted.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Characterization of a small helicopter UAV’s main rotor blade through Image Processing
Abstract: Image processing is applied to the task of characterizing the response of a miniature helicopter’s main rotor to collective control inputs under static conditions. The objective is to measure the pitch of the main rotor blade in relation to collective control inputs and deduce a transfer function model from the data..
A Molecular Basis for Estrogen-Induced Cryptorchidism
AbstractMale sexual differentiation relies upon testicular secretion of the hormones testosterone, Mullerian inhibiting substance, and insulin-3 (Insl3). Insl3 is responsible for testicular descent through virilization and outgrowth of the embryonic gubernaculum. In mouse, prenatal exposure to 17β-estradiol and the nonsteroidal synthetic estrogen diethylstilbestrol (DES) disturbs the endocrine balance, causing demasculinizing and feminizing effects in the male embryo, including impaired testicular descent (cryptorchidism). In the current study, we show that maternal exposure to estrogens, including 17α- and β-estradiol, as well as DES, specifically down regulates Insl3 expression in embryonic Leydig cells, thereby providing a mechanism for cryptorchidism. These experiments may have implications for the widespread use of estrogenic substances in agriculture and the environment
Measuring the erosion of debt
The calculation used for the inflation-adjustment of debt often produces incorrect results. With Debt and GDP adjusted by the same calculation and for the same inflation, the Debt/GDP ratio after adjustment must be equal to the ratio before adjustment. A graph comparing the ratio of nominals to the ratio of reals would show them to be identical. Such a graph will show no erosion of debt. But this is absurd. Instead, let each year's addition to debt be adjusted for inflation separately. Then the ratio of reals will run higher than the ratio of nominals, and will react to changes in inflation. It is a simple matter, then, to measure the erosion of debt
