Global Optical Control of a Quantum Spin Chain
Quantum processors which combine the long decoherence times of spin qubits
together with fast optical manipulation of excitons have recently been the
subject of several proposals. I show here that arbitrary single- and entangling
two-qubit gates can be performed in a chain of perpetually coupled spin qubits
solely by using laser pulses to excite higher lying states. It is also
demonstrated that universal quantum computing is possible even if these pulses
are applied {\it globally} to a chain; by employing a repeating pattern of four
distinct qubit units the need for individual qubit addressing is removed. Some
current experimental qubit systems would lend themselves to implementing this
idea.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Glueball mass from quantized knot solitons and gauge-invariant gluon mass
We propose an approach which enables one to obtain simultaneously the
glueball mass and the gluon mass in the gauge-invariant way to shed new light
on the mass gap problem in Yang-Mills theory. First, we point out that the
Faddeev (Skyrme--Faddeev-Niemi) model can be induced through the
gauge-invariant vacuum condensate of mass dimension two from SU(2) Yang-Mills
theory. Second, we obtain the glueball mass spectrum by performing the
collective coordinate quantization of the topological knot soliton in the
Faddeev model. Third, we demonstrate that a relationship between the glueball
mass and the gluon mass is obtained, since the gauge-invariant gluon mass is
also induced from the relevant vacuum condensate. Finally, we determine
physical values of two parameters in the Faddeev model and give an estimate of
the relevant vacuum condensation in Yang-Mills theory. Our results indicate
that the Faddeev model can play the role of a low-energy effective theory of
the quantum SU(2) Yang-Mills theory.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables; a version accepted for publication in

Electron spin coherence in metallofullerenes: Y, Sc and La@C82
Endohedral fullerenes encapsulating a spin-active atom or ion within a carbon
cage offer a route to self-assembled arrays such as spin chains. In the case of
metallofullerenes the charge transfer between the atom and the fullerene cage
has been thought to limit the electron spin phase coherence time (T2) to the
order of a few microseconds. We study electron spin relaxation in several
species of metallofullerene as a function of temperature and solvent
environment, yielding a maximum T2 in deuterated o-terphenyl greater than 200
microseconds for Y, Sc and La@C82. The mechanisms governing relaxation (T1, T2)
arise from metal-cage vibrational modes, spin-orbit coupling and the nuclear
spin environment. The T2 times are over 2 orders of magnitude longer than
previously reported and consequently make metallofullerenes of interest in
areas such as spin-labelling, spintronics and quantum computing.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Stability analysis of dynamical regimes in nonlinear systems with discrete symmetries
We present a theorem that allows to simplify linear stability analysis of
periodic and quasiperiodic nonlinear regimes in N-particle mechanical systems
(both conservative and dissipative) with different kinds of discrete symmetry.
This theorem suggests a decomposition of the linearized system arising in the
standard stability analysis into a number of subsystems whose dimensions can be
considerably less than that of the full system. As an example of such
simplification, we discuss the stability of bushes of modes (invariant
manifolds) for the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chains and prove another theorem about the
maximal dimension of the above mentioned subsystems
On the photoionization of the outer electrons in noble gas endohedral atoms
We demonstrate the prominent modification of the outer shell photoionization
cross-section in noble gas (NG) endohedral atoms NG@F under the action of the
fullerene F electron shell. This shell leads to two important effects, namely
to strong enhancement of the cross-section due to fullerenes shell polarization
under the action of the incoming electromagnetic wave and to prominent
oscillation of this cross-section due to the reflection of the photoelectron
from NG by the F shell.
All but He noble gas atoms are considered. The polarization of the fullerene
shell is expressed via the total photoabsorption cross-section of F. The
reflection of the photoelectron is taken into account in the frame of the
so-called bubble potential that is a spherical zero --thickness potential.
It is assumed in the derivations that NG is centrally located in the
fullerene. It is assumed also, in accord with the existing experimental data,
that the fullerenes radius R is much bigger than the atomic radius and the
thickness of the fullerenes shell . These assumptions permit, as it was
demonstrated recently, to present the NG@F photoionization cross-section as a
product of the NG cross-section and two well defined calculated factors.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figure
The Effect of Air on Granular Size Separation in a Vibrated Granular Bed
Using high-speed video and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) we study the
motion of a large sphere in a vertically vibrated bed of smaller grains. As
previously reported we find a non-monotonic density dependence of the rise and
sink time of the large sphere. We find that this density dependence is solely
due to air drag. We investigate in detail how the motion of the intruder sphere
is influenced by size of the background particles, initial vertical position in
the bed, ambient pressure and convection. We explain our results in the
framework of a simple model and find quantitative agreement in key aspects with
numerical simulations to the model equations.Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures, submitted to PRE, corrected typos, slight

Pickoff and spin-conversion quenchings of ortho-positronium in oxygen
The quenching processes of the thermalized ortho-positronium(o-Ps) on an
oxygen molecule have been studied by the positron annihilation age-momentum
correlation techinique(AMOC). The Doppler broadening spectrum of the 511 keV
gamma-rays from the 2gamma annihilation of o-Ps in O_2 has been measured as a
function of the o-Ps age. The rate of the quenching, consisting of the pickoff
and the spin-conversion, is estimated from the positron lifetime spectrum. The
ratio of the pickoff quenching rate to the spin-conversion rate is deduced from
the Doppler broadening of the 511 keV gamma-rays from the annihilation of the
o-Ps. The pickoff parameter ^1Z_eff, the effective number of the electrons per
molecule which contribute to the pickoff quenching, for O_2 is determined to be
0.6 +- 0.4. The cross-section for the elastic spin-conversion quenching is
determined to be (1.16 +- 0.01) * 10^{-19} cm^2.Comment: 4 pages with 5 eps figures, LaTeX2e(revtex4
